first DCI show with a 100% original music book. Also among the first to have a unified theme and not just a selection of 4-5 random tunes. RW Smith all the way!

it features original music by Robert W. Smith, not 100% original when you factor in the pits little 'london bridges falling down' blurb and 'when you wish upon a star' blurb as well.

Sun coast Sound’s book “A Florida Suite “ was a great composition by Robert Smith. Kudos to Sun Coast, I really missed them😢

+1 if you think a current corps the Smith worked for should revive this book in 2024 in honor of the composer

Take us to the beach Suncoast! It had to be one of staff, still one of my favorite shows of all time, its why I marched if it could stillbe called at least an incarnation in 1989, god I do miss the big, dirty blow it in your face horn lines of the 80-90's (disclaimer first year 1988) but man what did they do to drum corps

Nobody liked when he said it. It didn’t hype us, it interrupted the silence which is part of the composition.

Not entirely the first themed, show. 84 Garfield and West Side Story (You people have my ring!) comes to mind...and 81-82 Phantom Regiment' versions of "Spartacus" ha joined the chat. For that matter, I believe Cavies had an Alice in Wonderland show late in the VFW days.

Of all the years (six) that I marched baritone, this is the show when by far the most field judges would recognize me, see me taking a huge inhale, and *run* as fast & far as they could. FFF

this horn line defined what a 2 piston bugle ensemble was supposed to sound like. There will never be another sound like it. Never should have been replaced with the 3rd valve.

Amen. It also killed the small corps. You could still have a powerful sound with 20+ 2 valves, but you need 50 band instruments and a PA system and synths, to come near just 25 two valves.

I respect, admire and am thankful we still have major powerhouse corps . . . . but a person has to be in their '40's or later to remember what it was like to be in, as well as in front of these animals. Specifically the unparalleled power of the 2 piston bugle. The 3 piston was okay, but could not match the quality of the 2 valve. . . . . now there is little distinction between a "corps" and a band.

@@okbrassman I'm in my 60's and remember the power like it was yesterday. I marched snare with the Spirit of Atlanta, one of if not THE power house horns lines of all time with Jim Ott at the helm. 1980 was a great summer to march Spirit. Second in horns only to Blue Devils and a tie for first in drums with the Bridgemen. Memories.

Suncoast, from 84-89, was just quintessential 80's DCI. I can't decide which performance I like best, 84, 85 or 86. All so different, all so damn good... What the hell went wrong with the 84 DCI audio recordings. Just terrible...
