This episode made me realize that I’m only depressed when traumatic things happen to me. I was never born depressed, I had an amazing upbringing and was a happy child. What it comes down to is adulting, this shit super hard. I don’t take meds, I give myself pep talks and tell myself that everything will be okay. Talking out your problems may or may not help, do what works for you 💕

That's not depression then. Depression isn't conditional. People misuse the word too much. Depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain. You aren't motivated, can't focus, have no energy, etc. Stop confusing it with sadness. Someone who's depressed can't just snap out of it and it doesn't matter if everything is going good for them they'll still feel this way. A psychiatrist can diagnose it and prescribe meds to fix the chemical imbalance. Everyone has ups and downs, not the same as being depressed. What you described is just LIFE. I have bipolar Depression.

I'm a doctor (psychologist) and I REALLY appreciate the insight on how depression feels for you and others. Not enough people know what it feels like from the side of whoever is struggling. But KNOW, true friends don't consider you a burden. 🗣 LET THEM KNOW. Friends, ✔check on them consistently. Sometimes you gotta pop up when it's been a minute. Help them clean or cook for them. Show your love through actions. Depression will have you feeling numb. Our environments being beautiful and clean or smelling good HELPS! Bring something or do something that will boost their mood. Deep talks aren't always necessary. But anyway, thank you Mona!

This episode was so good. Depression is so real man. And it’s tough for people in their 20’s and 30’s because our parents (black parents particularly) were never made aware of how serious mental illness is, like we have (mainly because of social media). A lot of us are trying to break toxic cycles of unaddressed trauma, depression, anxiety etc

Children are assumed to not have the emotional capabilities of adults just because "they're kids". Which means their problems usually get brushed off. In reality, even though their frame of mind is different, their pain should never be minimized. Lean into empathy, compassion, and creating a safe space for friends and family. If you can't personally help someone, suggest therapy (sometimes it's free, income-based or insurance may cover it)

Yes Damona speak! You are doing the community such a service by keeping it 100. Yes finding the right prescription might take much longer than expected, yes it might take a few sessions with different therapists before you find your fit but you have to STAY COMMITTED. You have to advocate for yourself it is work, give your self a chance and stick with it. Sometimes you’ll find out that you didn’t even require medication you just needed counseling, for some meditation and more holistic treatments help. I cannot speak for those that have been in the fight for years with no avail🙏🏽 my statement is more for those who have yet to seek help.

Big ups to you Mona for having this conversation so openly. It's so necassary! And actually hearing the things that help and dont help from people in your life! And I get Phelps question in the sense that hearing in graphic detail about how someone ends their life does increase attempts. That's why the education about it has to be open and honest but without the gory details. Advocates have advised news reports to not share details of the method if they do cover suicides

I used to work at the Suicide Line & it’s not what Phelps think it is. They don’t play sad & depressing music or advertise it that way, because they don’t wanna trigger nobody. Now during certain holidays or major event, sometimes the wait is long for obvious reasons *BUT* most of the time, they’re available & even have a text/chat online option now (I think). Like Mona said, some people don’t have a support system so it helps to be able to call, speak to a neutral/supportive person (ideally), & get resources.

I made the decision to get on an antidepressant 2.5yrs ago & I did exactly what she said, went through 3 medications until I found the one for me. But I’m writing this to encourage those who need it because it really has helped me. No it doesn’t get rid of your depression as a whole, you’re going to still have your days, but it does help in your thoughts not going from 0-100. Not sure how to explain it but it’s worth the dedication to try until you find the right one.

phelps is a prime example of (if u haven't experienced something u will only know so much about the topic). cause the commercials & sh*t have nothing to do w/being suicidal. i dealt with it my whole life & it didnt stem from being exposed to those commercials. i'm glad that u got to explain it to not only him but anybody else that is unaware.

I appreciate this episode. I contacted one the hotlines due to my teenage daughter being suicidal and they were very helpful. As parent, I had no clue how to handle the situation and wanted to make sure my daughter received the help she needed. I've personally had episodes of depression but didn't know how to get help in my younger years. Like you Mona, I still get in moods where I don't want to be bothered so I don't take calls or talk to anyone. I have learned just how important mental health is in my 30s but I wish I had more tools and knew how to access resources earlier on. Sorry for the long post and be blessed everyone!!!

Phelps was making some points, even though y’all don’t wanna admit it. A LOT of kids nowadays have found mental illnesses as “trendy”. Plenty of them got exposed for faking it on TikTok for views, there’s merch for the “antisocial” kid, etc. It’s that niche to fit in. It just sucks because it takes away from people who are actually crying out for help.

Man I really felt what Mona was saying about her family and depression. I STRUGGLE with it for years and years but so does my mother and apparently its genetic cause her father's sister struggled with mental health issues as well. I talk to a therapist weekly. My mother on the other hand doesn't believe in getting help and is slowly losing her mind. It's a sad reality for many of us. Do what you have to do to live a productive and happy life. Trauma and ptsd are real but if you don't try something to heal you'll wind up engulfed with pain.

I understand Phelps saying Suicide awareness needs to be presented differently, it shouldn’t be suicide awareness or prevention the treatment before people even get near that point should be advertised more heavily rather than the ending steps being a rescue haven.. unsure if it’s what Phelps exactly means but how i would of added to it and understood it

Omg you just explained my whole thought process when it comes to myself….. I don’t have good days, only by making others happy. My life has been so filled by judgment of everyday life, why would I like myself if the rest of the world will find SOMETHING to dislike about me

I definitely roll up and watch faithfully. Thank you for addressing mental health- as someone who struggles daily with depression and anxiety, I appreciate your honesty about needing to heal yourself first and foremost. I also grew up with a mom with manic depression who never got treatment. I'm trying to break the cycle tho. I appreciate the laughs and realness you give us weekly. And stay strong everyone - you are needed - you are loved 💙

Phelps made a great point with the commercials because I FEEL it’s being broadcasted so much thru not just commercials but tv shows that are targeted more towards the youth. Moma also makes a good rebuttal with the sex education scenario!

yeah because parents don’t do their job of paying attention to their kids and having open conversations with them so the world has to step in for them. Then the kids first hear about it from tv than at home so yeah they might take it a different way. Plus parents can control the tv, i’m pretty sure Disney plus isn’t broadcasting those commercials.

Sometimes people jus need to know you care and feel that love, especially when they feel like they aren’t. Even if they push away still love them in the language they need. It’s not that they want you to go away maybe they need to know you will love them regardless and be there even when they are down
