Duke Nukem 3D was THE FPS game that broke the "Doom clone" curse for the category (Build engine was a bit more advanced). Released between Doom and Quake on April '96. Maybe it wasn't your time, but huge, huge miss.

@@jordanfreman4954 No, Duke was the first for sure. No one looked at it and thought 'Doom clone', it was powerful on its own. Since Half Life is 3D and Quake and Quake 2 were already around, it's not the same thing. Oh, and yeah,the curse ended. No games 'felt' like half-assed Doom games, and FPS became a category on its own.

I'll never forget getting Sound Blaster speakers for the first time ever back in 91/92. It blew my mind while playing WOLF 3D. I was 7 back then. Great memories.

Well, its not exactly a game but it would crack me and my mate up because the parrot would make a different noise when you pressed a different key, then it wud freeze up with the sound still coming out going MEEEEEEEEH! Back in a time where you could carry up to 30 weapons, usable items, jump, medkits, large colorful landscapes, fast and frantic gameplay, hidden secrets and play via LAN parties and couch coop with a buddy. Now it's brown n bloom, street grey, regenable health, checkpoints every 30 seconds, auto saving and only being able to carry two weapons. Sad how much times have changed.

I was surprised not to see "Blood", but I have to give you kudos for remembering Witchhaven (one of the best in my opinion) and Strife. Both excellent FPS of their time. Actually, I just remembered that "Blood" came out in 1997, so I guess that omission is understandable.

Agreed with the consensus, Duke Nukem 3D was a BIG miss in this video... That clearly was a FPS game like no other. Also, I think this might be another FPS from that era, Alien Trilogy (which I think was released on the PlayStation 1), I think that was a 1995 game.

I had a floppy disk copy of Wolfenstein back in 1993. My PC didn't have stereo speakers, so the game had no music and generic sound effects. My PC wasn't even capable of connecting to the Internet. Damn, we've come a long way in 25 years.

I want them all as Redux versions like the new Duke 3d ,Shadow Warrior ,Blood and Brutal Doom. replaying Heretic and Hexen1 at the moment with the Doomsday Engine. I can highly recommend it. Alien Trilogy as Redux would be nice too. Damn i love em all those games. my all time fav games

Obviously, Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein 3D had by far the best floor-to-wall and environment-to-enemy contrast, providing the cleanest graphics for best-possible orientation. All the other games would have achieved that only at much higher resolutions, like 640x400. Watching them at low-res, I get lost or dizzy all the time.

I was limited to 20 000 polygones on screen (including NPCs, and weapon - it aws 20k x 30 fps - so 600k /s) - now? There are items that hawe more than 20k polygons, and you can heve hundreds of them on screen.

Gamma brightness in the video option menue was extremely important for the doom franchise. Having this option turned too high will dramatically affect the game graphics detail. Playing in a dark room with brightness and gamma turned downed in the game; will bring out the best graphic detail. In this video the brightness was turned up way to high giving it a cartoon feel instead of a realistic feel.

Dark Forces was the first FPS to give me a slight case of vertigo and it just felt weird seeing and hearing the Star Wars universe turned a corridor shooter with a synthesized score. I wish I could better explain how I both wanted to play the game but also how bizarre it made me feel playing it.

Rise of the Triad was a very good first person shooter. So was Duke Nukem. Warcraft II and Command & Conquer were amazing. Doom 2 of course. I think I played those 5 games more than any others in the 1990s. Loads of fun. Heretic, Hexen, Quake. Played those too. The old games were the best.

Good old days :'( Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 was good, but love Heretic and Hexen more. Quake 1 was also cool. :) ID Software made a great job at those days. ;-)

Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, that was incredebile !!! Quake, Heretic, Duke Nukem.. Maybe Outlaws ?

Definitely, love that game. Came out the same year as DOOM if I recall. Neat you could actually crouch, jump, and look around in all directions.
