I remember growing up watching my dad play video games while I scratched his head. Of course there were the big boys, (half life, blood, doom, etc.) But the one that stands out the most because of the pure joy it brought to my dad was this game. He loves the wild west. Loves Clint Eastwood movies. And this game made him feel like he was in that world. I'll never forget how happy this game made my dad. And made me happy because of it. Thank you for such a wonderful review and a step back in time.

The whole soundtrack is fantastic. "The Last Gunfight" isn't even my favorite but it's definitely the most impressive one. It's "Ecstasy of Gold" but there's a huge difference between an imitation and a hommage, and "The Last Gunfight" is the definition of the latter. Shows the composer really knew his subject matter.

I forgot how good the animated cutscenes were in this game. And honestly, the story is a lot better than most westerns I've seen. I should replay this game soon. Your brilliant review definitely made me want to re-install it. Not gonna lie, though, I love me some FPS goodness, but I wish this was a point and click adventure instead. Would've given the voice actors a lot more time to shine.
@Cephalopod514 жыл бұрын
I can understand that view, though I think Outlaws wouldn't be the same if it were just another point and click adventure game. Adventure games, including LucasArts' best ones, were on the decline then. Still, an Outlaws-based adventure game powered by The Curse of Monkey Island's engine would be pretty awesome. It would need to implement a Western-styled gun mechanic into its adventure game design, which would also be awesome. At the same time, I don't see why an Outlaws game can't be both a Dark Forces-styled FPS and a LucasArts-styled adventure game at the same time. Outlaws already has some adventure game elements in its design, with its special items, various puzzles, and explorable interactive environments. Outlaws' limitations were probably due to the game's development time, so that might explain why the developers weren't able to develop their characters some more. Dark Forces and Jedi Knight also weren't able to develop their villains further due to time constraints. It's possible the developers weren't aiming to develop their characters further, and just wanted to make a fun game. They were after all working with a slightly improved version of the Jedi Engine, which was dated by then, and released the game only a few months before Jedi Knight came out. I still think their work on Outlaws, both the game itself and its animated cutscenes, were remarkably well done. If a modern day spiritual successor of Outlaws had the benefit of time, money, and proper development, you could probably get away with combining classic point and click LucasArts adventure game sensibilities with the FPS action and experience of Outlaws.

I'm pretty happy you reviewed this as this was the very first FPS game I played way back in '99 when I was 13. A friend from school told me about the game and I rented it from my local library. I think this was what made me take an interest in the Western genre and yeah, I could never complete the Sawmill level and had to use cheat codes to skip it (olpostal ect..) the Bounty Hunter levels were pretty fun as well. Also I loved the soundtrack so much I used to play the CD-ROM's in my Music player a lot. In a way I kinda consider Call of Juarez: Gunslinger as a spirtual successor. I also remember other FPS' that got me into the genre such as Dark Forces/Jedi Knight, Klingon Honor Guard and Quake II.

Really good video! This game doesn't get talked about anywhere near the level that it should, what with it being one of the few Old West FPS games (and developed by LucasArts, no less!) out there. My dad missed the Quake train so this and Dark Forces II were my formative shooter experiences. I remember reading the manual so much that it got pretty frayed and raggedy. Regarding the Canyon level, you're right that the aiming is super weird. I found that whenever you're standing well above or below an enemy, you have to aim above their heads or below their feet in order to hit anything properly.

This was the first video game I ever played when I was 3 years old. It came out the year I was born and a few years later a friend of my family gave me the game as a Christmas present after having introduced me to it previously. It was my favorite game as a kid and is still one of my all-time favorite video games to this day out of pure sentimental value. I even still have my original copy! 😅 It doesn't really work on Windows 10, so I play the GOG version (yes.....I still play it to this day on occasion) but like I've still got the original 2-disc set lol. I grew up watching Western movies with my dad and grandpa and the Western genre remains my favorite in film, literature, and video games alike, and it does my heart good to see that in a time where we have far more advanced, well-made games like Red Dead Redemption 2 (another favorite of mine), there are still people who can appreciate this classic 1990s FPS Western game, and I agree with you it deserves more recognition and appreciation than it gets. You, sir, have earned yourself a new subscriber. 😎💜 Thank you for making this vid and introducing your viewers to this gem of a game.

I remember playing the demo from a demo disc back in the days. Played it over and over. I also remember going into the settings. An option is there for invincibility. It does what it says on the tin. I was just confused because that is something that is usually hidden with cheat-codes. But here, it's in there. Right in the open to use. As someone who usually play Kojima-games on Very Easy mode. This may have been the start of my downfall. But y'know. Sometimes you just want to get through to the next cut scene.

The last time I saw or heard anything about this game was when I was a little kid, more than 20 years ago. I used to hang out with my neighbour's kid, and we'd play this on his dad's computer. I'd totally forgotten it had that cartoon aesthetic, I always remembered it being gritty and attempting to appear photorealistic. Glad to see it's actually as decent a game as I recalled. Having met so many other classic FPS fans over the last 20 years and this game never coming up, I'd begun to assume it was bad and I just enjoyed it cause I was like 8 years old and didn't know any better lol. Pretty awesome. I remember climbing my neighbour's fence after dinner, keen to play some Outlaws. It's on GOG too, I'll have to pick it up and revisit it sometime. Also 'The Ballad of Dr. Death' sounds like a Mr. Bungle song, surf rock guitar and vocalisations and all, I wonder if that primed me for my first time hearing Mr. Bungle later on in my teens lol.

I'm ready for this brave, new world of Scarfulhu looking at LucasArt's non-adventure games... mostly because, hopefully, that means a Herc's Adventure video is incoming. Eventually. At some point in the future. I mean, I can certainly be patient - Scarfy content is always worth the wait, and this vid on Outlaws is excellent. Not quite good enough to get me to nab it from GOG right now, but that's more the fault of my personal backlog than anything right now. The game really does look fantastic. I wonder if Nightdive could even get ahold of it these days? I mean, Disney was oddly cool with re-releases of the older Monkey Island titles and a bunch of Star Wars games, plus they let loose their grip on some other surprising IP... I guess it's not impossible. Heck, maybe if I put off buying it for another year or two, a Nightdive remaster will get announced in the meantime and I can just play that! Now to play the waiting game... :)
