Apple Watch Series 10 & Ultra 2 Black: Hands-on (23 Things to Know!)

Here's everything you need to know about the new Apple Watch Series 10, from start to finish!
Today Apple announced Apple Watch Series 10, with a substantial hardware change and upgrade. In fact, so big it’s now got a bigger screen than the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (which didn’t see a new hardware version this year, only a new Titanium finish option). Apple also eschewed updating the Apple Watch SE lineup, leaving the previous 2022 (2nd gen) edition in place. Point is, for the first time in a few years, the Series 10 is the star of the show this year.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is all about increasing…well…everything. From the display, to the brightness on angle, to the display refresh rate in always-on display mode. Except in one area: It’s now the thinnest Apple Watch ever made, coming in at 9.7mm, 10% thinner than the existing Series 9. Here’s everything that’s changed compared to the Series 9:
- Totally new case design (in terms of visual look), and changes to the model sizes being 42mm/46mm
- Biggest usable display area to date in any Apple Watch: 374x446px for the 42mm 416x496px for the 46mm
- Thinnest design to date (9.7mm versus 10.7mm on Series 9)
- New ‘Ionic Glass’ screen design, which tapers further down the edge of the display
- New “Wide Angle OLED’ display, which is 40% brighter when viewed on an angle
- Increase brightness when viewed
- Always-on display mode will now show seconds even when wrist is down (updates at 1-second rate in standby mode, versus 1-minute rate)
- Added ability to have speaker play media/music (previously it wouldn’t, had to connect headphones)
- New faster charging times, 80% charge in 30 mins (fastest Apple Watch to date)
- New S10 sip (chipset) inside the Series 10
- Adds new voice calling automatic background removal with new neural network
- Adds depth gauge (supports depths to 6m/20ft for snorkeling - still maintains 50m waterproofing)
- Adds temperature sensor (supports water temperature for swimming activities)
- Adds new ’Tides’ app to show tidal data globally
- Adds snorkeling support for Series 10 (via 3rd party Oceanic App/partnership)
- Adds sleep apnea detection, monthly reporting with analysis reports
- Adds new sleep metric: breathing disturbances (which feeds into sleep apnea detection)
- Adds new ‘Flux’ watch face
- Adds new ‘Reflections’ watch face
- Adds new metal backplate to watch
- Three color options for base edition: Rose Gold, Silver Aluminum, Jet Black
- Three new polished titanium versions, weigh 20% less than existing stainless steel variants
- Titanium Series 10 is a carbon-neutral product

FWIW I'm a PADI master Diver with over 100 dives logged now. I find this whole trend completely disingenuous as 99% of users will not exhaust this capability but will likely consider it when buying as an aspirational thing. I would still not use or recommend Apple device as your only dive computer, where your life literally depends on it. Fenix 8 on the other other hand... is not quite there yet but close as Garmin equipment has been used in diving community for a long time now anyway.

The biggest letdown was not given the original ultra sleep apnea tracking which they could easily have done. Apple's gonna start to learn a hard lesson if they don't stop their games because people just aren't going to accept it anymore. This kind of strategy was fine in the beginning it was a great way of making money and it got them to where they are but people just aren't gonna put up with it anymore. There's so many other options out there. They're just not going to get away with their previous tactics.

The pricing structure is ridiculous. The titanium standard Apple Watch is 749 in the UK and the ultra is 800. Why would I buy the standard Apple Watch when I could buy the ultra?

More battery = heavier watch and they're trying to make it lighter. So, instead of giving you more battery, Apple made it so that the new watch charges faster. Something like close to completely in 30 minutes. So, as said, if you charge it for 15 minutes before bed--and I assume in bed you're can put it on lower power, etc., you'll get all the battery you need for the night.

Wow I was really hoping for a 128gb to appear for running with our iTunes collection. Since the 128gb iPod touch disappeared we’ve been nursing our remaining ones along. We don’t have cellular service about half the year when we’re in upper Michigan, so no sense in subscribing to Apple Music. Huge hassle editing it down for a watch. So we wait another year to ever experience the Apple Watch.

It’s extremely disappointing. Take a long flight in the middle of the day and by the time you arrive to your destination the watch is dead. Sleep apnea tracker with a watch that doesn’t last even one day is a joke. Yes there’s the Ultra but it is ugly as sin, like a 1970s Casio. The size improvement is great but no-one was asking for a thinner watch, everyone was asking for a longer lasting battery

Do you know how detailed the Sleep apnea report will be ? Will it just be : you have no problem or a mild or a heavy Sleep apnea ? Or will it be able to tell you for example : you have 30 breathing stops per hour, which last on average 10 seconds ?

I will be sticking with my Ultra Gen 1 since it still has access to the Blood O2 sensor. Plan to do a battery swap with Apple and hold off until either Ultra 3 with S10 or Series 11,12 etc with longer battery life.

I’ll have to see them in person but so far just the concept is disappointing. It was a ten year anniversary, I was expecting a major re-do design wise. They are allegedly smaller and thinner and “lighter” if you get the titanium version which is hundreds more. Am I right that the ONLY feature added was sleep apnea detection which is something the series 9 is getting anyway? Series 9 also has the blood oxygen feature and these had that feature taken away due to patent issues. And also the colors…. For the aluminum it’s black, rose gold and silver. Haven’t we been at those color choices before?

I considered purchasing the new Apple Watch 10, but then I decided on a Seiko Automatic “Save the Ocean” aka The Great White. I love my new Seiko as my daily wear now. My Apple Watch 7 Stainless Steel is now used when I ride my MTB, and I don’t sleep with my phone because I prefer to sleep with my wife.

The second hand showing in dimmed state is just for aesthetic or is it an actual functional second hand? Noticed that it just stopped ticking but not sure if that’s the case with all watch faces or just that one in the video.

There’s just not enough difference to make me even think of buying anything new. I’ve still got a watch series 1 that’s still going ok after I put a new battery in it, I use it when gardening and general use. I bought an Ultra 1 when I thought the series 1 had died. It’s a great watch, but there again there’s nothing that grabs me to upgrade and no doubt it’ll go on for a number of years. I may upgrade my iPhone XR only because iOS 18 will be the last upgrade, and I use the phone for literally everything. Since getting an iPad Pro last year I haven’t touched my MacBook Pro and I doubt I’ll replace it. The iMac 27” is seriously slowing down so may get a Mac mini and 32” monitor and put Ubuntu on the 27” as it has an intel chip.

On the fence about this. I have a titanium Series 6 and it has been a real workhorse I feel naked without but going for a "black" Ultra 2 when there's no update is definitely something I can wait on. Did it with all my iPhones, and my MBP's... and will do it again with the watches. Apple would be stupid to think everyone jumps at everything all the time, every year... like these "tech KZbinrs" do to flex on kid plebeians.
