CDR Carroll -- we had the F-14As on CVN-65 back in 1984: VF-114 (The Fighting Aardvarks) and VF-213 (The Black Lions). I was ship's company and jumped at the chance to be on the flight deck -- and when on the deck taking pictures, as the Tomcats were ready to launch -- I swear I could feel my heart inside my body rattle! ! I do not know how you pilots were not VIBRATING after a mission. Side note: we had trials of the F-18A at this time as well. The first generation F-18s were DWARFED by the Tomcat side by side. My buddies and I were saying "how could this little thing replace the Tomcat?" I did not get to meet the Hornet pilots, regretfully. During the cat launches, I am not sure if they were hot-dogging it -- but when they launched, the pilot pulled on the sick and they just about went vertical. I wish I still had the video. We all looked at each other and said "Holy S***t!" We were not expecting that. Even though the Super Hornets are much better than the first generation, I still lean towards the Tomcat because of its bad-a$$ design -- it just looked lethal. Love the channel and the commentary! BZ!

@kilmer009 Being in the Navy in 1984 and assigned to CVN-65 was just amazing. I felt so bad for our flight deck crew because they were just about cooked alive while we were in the Persian Gulf. 120+ degrees was the norm out there. While the pilots ruled the skies, the guys on the deck kept the catapults up and the air wing ALWAYS ready. Here were kids barely out of high school, but so damn smart they kept the most sophisticated military aircraft ready for war 24x7. I really hope CDR Carroll could find his plane captain to showcase the incredibly hard work it took and the prestige of getting their name stenciled on a Tomcat.

@@kilmer009same I wish I could have seen the Tomcat flight off a carrier as well. I served on the Harry S Truman (CVN-75) from 2014 to 2019, but if I had been born maybe ten to fifteen years earlier I may have had the chance. Still awesome to see the Super Hornet and at the time the Legacy Hornets fly though.

I was ready to go in 1986 until the Navy recruiter told me I couldn't be a pilot because of my glasses. No offense to his RIO offer, but I was racing motocross at the time and had the reflexes. Wow....!!! This is my first time aboard with you on an, oh so realistic, mission. I am just gob smacked at the technology available today. I'm not a gamer so not familiar with where things are these days. I used to use Microsoft Flight Simulator back when I was training for my private ticket. But haven't done any since I sold my plane. This DCS simulator that you have is just stunning. Being a retired software engineer I have some idea of the amount of software that goes into making these things work. Things have advance so far since I retired that it is like some sort of magic. I can imagine how you must be "feeling" the G forces that were present in the real thing. I've done enough flying to know that banking turns like those push you down in your seat a lot. I flown a AT-6 and a P-51 so I have some idea. Nothing like a Tom Cat though. This is a very good eye opener of just how busy the world of aerial combat is. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Wow, I really enjoyed this video.. :-) Long ago, 60's some time, I was about 3 or 4 years old when my father took me to work with him. He was Army, Ft George G. Meade and worked WMAR TV Baltimore Md news. Anyway, there was this new fighter jet, the fastest they were testing. My father asked if I could go up with him, but the pilot didnt think is was a good idea, and they didn't have a fire proof suit small enough for me, so I didnt get to go up, but I was able to stand right next to it....:-( When they landed, my father really looked green, from the maneuvers the pilot made up there...;-) Glad I was there to witness that fast jet! Hey, to this pilot, can you pick me up someday, for a free ride?...:-) I grew up on that Military Base. The General used to give me rides in his jeep. I told him back then, around 1962 a female would be General one day...;-) My father was in Marines first then Army. I almost joined the Navy at 18, but my father was upset what the recruiting office told me about a condo I could live in, so he went up there to talk to them and I didn't join...:-( My father always wanted to get his wings, but never did. During a special mission, the chopper he was in, went down over enemy lines. I helped the General get him and another survivor home and was given the civilian award, and pinned by the General. He showed me his log book, and stated I was the youngest to get that award, at age 4...:-) My father did aerial photography. Funny, because later in life I worked for U.S. Capitol police in Washington D.C.,. During the State of the Union, a General approached me, since I had a Star pin on my uniform and no one else did. He asked what it was for. I told him I made Officer of the month, one month out of the academy. Then I told him, one day I will have more stars than him...;-)

Ward, the hardest part for me landing a Tomcat in DCS is the spatial awareness of how big the plane is under you as you approach the deck. You hit the 4th wire and that works. As I watched you put it down on the deck, I felt that same feeling when I land where it's hard to judge your actual height before you touch down. When I first started landing, I would easily clip the gear on the edge of the deck 😮and boom! As a result, I tend to land long as well and usually snag the 3 wire. Do you notice a difference if you land several times during a session, or its pretty much the same for you each time? Is this a limitation of a flat screen simulation, or did you sense anything like that in real life?
