I have managed to crash land the Mi-8 in full horizontal spin several times, but this tip definately helps in terms of elimininating the spin... all you need is the altitude tho :P

Yeah, altitude is necessary. If you go to page 40 of the new manual for the Mi-8 you can find the Height-velocity diagram or as it is often called "dead mans curve". This shows the areas you have to avoid if you want to survive a loss of engine power. If you stay outside of the orange/red areas you should be able to allways get a proper autoration going.

Hey John, first thanks for the video. Just yesterday I was asking myself if it would be possible in DCS to simulate failure of certain parts or systems of the aircraft. Could you tell how in depth is this feature? Can you generate scenarios with automatic failure or do you simply turn off specific systems during flight or how does it work? I have just gotten into DCS and been flying the SU25 so far and having my eye on the Mi-8 to purchase as my first module. I somehow took it for granted that multicrew aircraft would also have multicrew support in multiplayer until I stumbled upon some comments that do suggest otherwise. As of now, is there still no option to do this? Is currently the only option to take weapon control to put the helicopter in auto-hover? I am primarily interested in flying the Mi-8 for transport, not necessarily combat missions. But I like to keep it realistic, so can the Mi-8 be controlled by a single pilot to it's full potential for civilian purposes without me having to switch seats? I appreciate your effort in putting your videos up, they are interesting to watch and very informative. Keep it up!

Hi Choco Loco, Let's start with the failures you mentioned. If you place down a "player" controlled helicopter/aircraft in the mission editor, there is a tab controll on the right hand side of the screen where one of the tabs is "system failures". There you can set up certain failure conditions with certain probabilites after a certain amount of time. This is also how I set up this video. If you download the mission file and have a look at it in the mission editor it should become clear how that works! :) The multicrew is a bit of a complicated topic. Multicrew is possible in DCS since a short while now and some aircraft and helicopters have it allready implemented (L-39C, Gazelle, ...), however Belsimtek has yet to integrate multicrew into the UH-1H and the Mi-8. There is a bit of dissapointment going through the community that this hasn't been done allready but I am sure at one point they will get arround to do it... I believe the Mi-8 can be operated from one seat quit well in our simulator environment, while in the real world you would have a 3 man crew (pilot, co-pilot and engineer) where of those 3 guys the pilot and co-pilot would be in the cockpit for most of the flight, whereas the engineer would leave for certain tasks (loading/unloading, slingloading, etc.). Weapon employment is quit straight forward once you have everything set up and can be done by one person alone quit comfortably. The autopilot is a big help in the simulator environment as if you want to do something from the copilot seat (doppler navigaiton, radios, etc.) you just enable all 3 autopliot channels (the "stabilisation" channel should be on all the time anyways) and the helicopter will keep the current heading, altitude and speed just fine while you do the tasks of the co-pilot. I personally like to switch seats for better overview. Starting the helicopter from the engineer position is much easier as you have an overview over all the necessary panels as you are in the center of the cockpit. Radios and the doppler navigation system are easier to operate from the co-pilot seat as the controls are right there. However, once the helicopter is started and the radios are set, there is little reason for you to leave the pilot position as he has everything necessary for flying arround him.

hey buddy i fly numerous real helicopters. if you loose your tail in cruise and you are light you can fly with low collective setting. to land or heavy to maintain low collective straight flight the best to do is KILL the engine (kills torque) then do autorotation ;-) if you are slow and low you are dead ( dead man curve)
