Knew that trick already, but it's a great tutorial for those who don't. DCS really needs that AB detent option. Even US Navy Fighters had that back in 1994, when calibrating the stick it asked for min, mil and max. Also, we can modify only 3 boundaries, one of which is the deadzone, the other two being the saturation values. I desparately need the fourth one which is missing in some planes, and I've just managed to get around this culprit by having the throttle axes mapped 1:1 in reverse on a virtual stick (vJoy + UJR) and use those instead of the WH axes when I need it the other way round. Could be much easier if DCS had all the options and not just some...

I ended up finding mine from trial and error back in the FC2 days. If I recall correctly 22 was where the line is, but that would make the throttle start the burners half the time I was on the detent so I pushed it to 23 or 24. I may be remembering a different setting, though. But those days are long past me, these days I got a throttle with a movable detent. No longer do I have to modulate multiple afterburner stages my final 10% of throttle travel. I also did kinked line method shown here for a while, calculator comes in handy to get the numbers. Also, sliders affect the curve both at and around the setting and so modifying the next and previous numbers by one or two can dramatically improve the result. I've since moved on to an actual curve. There are some parts of the throttle you almost never use and so giving them less space over the important areas was great. But using the previous numbers as a guide and making very slight tweaks is critical there. In an ideal world I'd like the Falcon 4.0 AB setting too. Though I'd personally make it split the curve into two parts, and give the same adjustment settings in game right now for either side. That way you can have a complex curve pre-afterburner and a linear curve through the burner for example, or a deadzone between mil and burner, or even a curve through the burner to make stage 1 easier to hit with large detents. I've thought about it for a while in the past, it seems to be ideal both for casual users and for those wanting far more control than we get even today.

Great stuff! Was so surprised for such a long time that the info on this was rather minimal. For me a good detent is quite fundamental for an accurate and immersive sim experience. I only adjusted the general curve settings with the unavoidable loss of accuracy. There is a dcs forum link with suggested curves for most of the jet planes. And the Falcon option should be incorporated in dcs. Nice to make the subject of curves so clear! Thanks!

My T16000M does not have an AB detent. I just go full AB, wait for speed, instantly take back the throttle and use the ATC (autothrottle / Key: "T") to make my Hornet give 100% thrust without afterburner. So it is always trying to hit the AB speed but will never use AB. And when I move the throttle it goes into manual mode again. Works out for me.

In the Hornet the aferburner sounds kicks in before any flames are visible. So where does it really start? With the animation or sound?
@RedKiteRender
@RedKiteRender 4 жыл бұрын
If in doubt you can use the fuel flow, normally what'l happen is the flames appear later because they take a moment to ignite once you've reached the AB segment, which is why i suggest moving slowly on the throttle so you don't get caught out with the engine response lag.

Well they finally add it to the viper, but now we have the f15e, something they could do it fairly easy but ED likes to see us beg for something, that is getting old, the F-15E AB engage almost at 70% or 75% (in my x56) of the throttle and thats nuts, i have tried everything but sometimes the compromise is so big, when refueling if you make these manual adjustments the throttle resolution gets way sensitive to fly in formation, man ED team is smaller than my family of 5 humans, feels like they don't want to expand the team and have smaller salaries..i dont know what it is but for a Sim with this price tag these updates should be in weeks, .. for each module or big update we have to wait sometimes 1 year, its nuts

Can we use curvature instead of the user curve to set it up? what is the advantage and disadvantage in that?
@RedKiteRender
@RedKiteRender 4 жыл бұрын
Issue with curvature is you delineate the throttle across the whole travel, i find that makes it harder to make adjustments in formation or air to air refuelling, you won't generally notice it outside of precision flying however. But also you can't choose a sharper or softer curve early on or after the afterburner setting. (Some aircraft like the Viggen for example it helps to adjust the multiple afterburner stages curve individually too)

Mirage and a few others (i think) have a similar switch, some also have an afterburner finger lift button that can be enabled in the special options.

how do you set up the idle detent with the warthog?
@MattesSPunkt
@MattesSPunkt 4 жыл бұрын
the idle detent on the warthog is a button. in the modules keeybinding you find throttle idle. just bind it as usual any move your thottle into the cutoff position. it will register as a button press.at least on the F-14 it worked that way
@RedKiteRender
@RedKiteRender 4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean on your physical controller? i showed it in the first min, unscrew the cover between the throttles, remove the cover, pull out the detent piece and turn it the other way, place back in. You then have to pull up the finger lifts to pass over it unless you file it down like i have. Alternatively you could order a 3d printed push through detent.

@@RedKiteRender no I mean to get it properly functioning in DCS, specifically with the hornet. I have the afterburner detent set up and working great, that simple because its all the same curve. but I don't know how to get the idle detent working.

@Carl Groover Ah sorry mis-read your comment. you've got to lift the handles to pass into it. Then either pass in or out it'l output a button press (22 / 23 i think). Doesn't always catch it in dcs though. you can force it with the selection drop down if needed.

This video applies to any dcs aircraft. If you’re wondering about the next JF-17 tutorial, i chose this topic to ease myself back in to making videos. I do have a JF-17 video on the way however.

Thanks! But : That could've been made SO MUCH easier, like Falcon 4.

Yep, which is why i'd highlighted it, as a gentle nudge nudge hint hint to dcs. Now, if BMS could have DCS's controls binding screen for the rest of it that'd be awesome. (i use Alternative launcher instead of Falcon 4's old ui)

Frankly, it is easier to 3D print a dozen of those detents instead of filing down the stock one.

I'm curious, where would you 3d print these parts ? Do you send the 3d model to a company that does it for you and you would have to wait a week before it arrives or do you have your own 3d printer in that case good for you but saying it is easier isn't really looking at the whole picture. Why is 3d printing is easier than simply filing down the detent? I'm pretty sure for most people it certainly isn't.
@theeltea
@theeltea 4 жыл бұрын
@@notproplayer3649 I printed at a local 3d print workshop. Get the stl files at debolestis page. Google debolestis, you'll find him easily. He's on the forums too. Filing down the detent is an easily fuckable up job and is irreversible. A dozen of those 3d printed inserts cost me about ten bucks. I can even file them individually without tweaking curves.
@notproplayer3649
@notproplayer3649 4 жыл бұрын
@@theeltea okay if you say so though I haven't got any workshops nears me, and I'm pretty sure you could find trigger detents on Ali express or sites like that, yes the shipping time is long but that's the last ressort if I end up fucking up my filling. And again I'm not really sure that a lot of people have got access to some sort of 3d impression.

Most people have noticed, it's just in such a rough state right now and not worth covering unless you're clamouring for views. A bit like the Hornet tgp slave modes which are fundamentally unusable right now.
