Hey guys! This video is dedicated to every DCS World Pilots favorite ground target and worst Enemy, Surface to Air Missile or SAM Sites!
The Magnificent DCS Syria map first introduced hardened SAM Sites scattered around the map for Mission Makers to easily place SAMs in their missions and the DCS Sinai Map takes that feature and runs with it!
The DCS Sinai Map has taken SAM Sites to the next level with custom SAM Batteries in their true to life locations and setups with specific installations for SA-2 Guidelines, SA-3 Goas, Iron Dome, and many more. Developer OnReTech has also been able to add SAM site markers to the Mission Editor to make finding and setting up SAM sites an absolute breeze. One of my biggest complaints about the Syria Map was having to hunt across the map to place SAMs in their correct spots.
This is just a small preview of the huge variety of SAM installations on the terrain, and I decided not to show you guys exactly where they were so that way you guys can experience the fun of exploring and discovering the map when you get you own copy in your hands.

Wow Spud! Am I dreaming? I grew up on stories of the very brave IAF pilots that went against those SAMs. My mother knew some of the pilots and told me about Shemuel Hetz who held his injured F4 Kornass just long enough for the back sitter to eject. She was with his wife at his funeral and later gave her moral support and became her friend. The Israelis coined the phrase 'The missile had bent the fighters jets wing'. Great stuff!

I’m sure you’ve already read it but Phantoms Over Israel by Iftach Spector is a novelization of his time flying the Kurnass on the Yom Yippur War, it’s a fantastic read even with the rough translation. I don’t recall what’s title is in Hebrew.

@@Spudknocker In hebrew it's called 'A dream in blackened blue' it's in my book shelf, I read it several times. I intend to refresh my knowledge for the arrival of the F4E and Sini, recreation of the last mission of Hetz and Bin-Nun that was the other jet that got hit on that raid is a must. Avihu Bin-Nun managed to land in Refidim base in Sini. This squadron called the 201 or just 'Haachat' meaning 'The one' is an endless repository for DCS reenactment missions. They saw a lot of action in the war of attrition and later in 73. To me it's one of the most inspiring periods of air combat history. The migs and the sams represented the darkest and most hazardous era of the cold war. I hope we see more content like this.

Sams can be countered by drones very easily, especially the HEAVY SAMs you can use anything to destroy anything, for example use Early warning radar or other radars to tell certain assets to engage when in no escape zone, so knowing where the front line is, is so critical. Jamming to shrink sam rings (not much is known about jamming since highly classified i guess), stealth to shrink even further NEW AGM 88E lofts, comes down near vertical and has a millimetre radar and GPS, so you can't shut down, only solution to shoot down, but they could overwhelm you and also barrage jam at the same time. they have the GBU 53 storm breaker too which can take out SAMs and the GBU 39 is good for saturated. do SAMs generally have spare track radars, arn't they generally very expensive? Nice video and very informative, you're a good speaker, subscribed

Well, the HARM did not yet exist in any of the countries on that map during the times conflicts happened in that area. Heck, it didn't even exist in the US at that time. Neither did drones. And based on the history of conflicts in that area, most servers are going to be cold war era servers.

@Spudknocker, can you make a video on how to create missions? Thanks for the great video, just that we have moved away from the Sa-2s, and the Egyptian Air defence is a separated from the army and Airforce, with its own command. S-300VM, Patriot PAC 2/3, IRS-T, BUK M1/2, MIM-23 HAWK, SA-6, TOR M1/2, Avenger, Cortale, MIM-72 Chaparral (I hate it 😂), and a wide variety of IDAS SITES. And the Egyptian Navy FREMM, MEKO A-200, Gowind and Oliver Hazar, it can provide good air defence. and the Egyptian airforce, F-16,Mirage 2000, Mig-35, Rafael and maybe F-15. Egyptian armed forces are updating old equipment since the beginning of the 2000, mixed forces of professional and conscripted army and a pool of man power bigger than Israel. It will be interesting to create a new mission with all the Airdefence sites.

But DCS doesn't simulate the human SAM operators, does it? I.e. I can't just drop a JDAM w/ penetrator warhead on the command bunker and disable the site by turning its operators into pink mist.
@Spudknocker

You have to get close enough to drop that penetrator. Better to take out the radar first!

I hate to break it to you, but the IAF completely owned the SAM sites in the Sinai in grand fashion. It was the tactics that they pioneered that the USAF now uses in Wild Weasel operations. They used the same tactics against the ones in Syria as well, so no, these were not the IAF's worst nightmare because don't forget they won all the wars that they've been in since they established the modern state of Israel. They decimated the Egyptian SAMs, then destroyed all of their tanks in the middle of the desert and many of those hulks are still there to this day. How do I know all this? I was based in the Sinai as part of the MFO that maintains the peace treaty established in the 1982 Camp David Accords and we went over the history of the area pretty thoroughly.
@Spudknocker
@Spudknocker Жыл бұрын
You are both Correct and Incorrect at the same time here, the IAF took massive losses in the first few days of the campaign due to the strategic SAMs (SA-2's, SA-3's & SA-6's) Emplaced around the canal. This was mostly due to the surprise nature of the attack and the need to interdict Egyptian units crossing the Suez Canal and their bridgeheads. However, the Egyptians quickly outran their SAM coverage and were decimated by Israeli Air Power in the middle of the Sinai Peninsula in the desert like you said. Once the ground situation was stabilized the IAF could then start to systematically roll back the Egyptian IADs (they didn't call it that back then) as they regained air superiority and Israeli units went on the counter attack and they themselves crossed the canal into mainland Egypt. I hate to break it to you that I spent 4 years studying this conflict. I highly recommend reading the book Phantoms Over Israel by Ifatch Spector, a novelization of his time flying the F-4 in the Yom Kippur War, it really displays how desperate a war it was for the IAF and shows how deeply the IAF was affected by the losses suffered to both Egyptian and Syrian SAMs. After the conflict the IAF spent years developing the SEAD and DEAD tactics used to great effect in the 1982 Lebanon War and the Battle of the Bekaa Valley, in response to the terrible losses suffered to SAMs in 1973.
@MrWhiteladder61
@MrWhiteladder61 Жыл бұрын
Spud is absolutely correct here, the Egyptian Sams absolutely cream the Israeli airforce at the start of the Yom kippur war. They were totally unprepared for the Sa-6 for example, their RWR and ecm equipment was not designed to tackle the CW guidance. Ironically it was large due to the Egyptian success in breaking the defences of the Bar Lev line and pushing so far into the Sinai and out of their Sam umbrella along the Suez canal the gave the IAF a chance. Also America flew in large quantities of replacement F-4 and Skyhawk to replace the large attrition from the sams and Maverick missiles that turned the tide.
