That was excellent! I love how you incorporate so much history and give real-world examples while flying around. I could listen to the whole 17 minutes without getting bored

Thank you for posting this very nice video. Without going into much detail, the video is however just a tip of the iceberg of how the two different Airbase disperal doctrines used by Swedish Air Force worked. I am happy you explained it in the beginning of the video in Sweden the go by the name BAS 60 & BAS 90. Even if the video suggests that it was very mobile and for the Viggen system especially in use for DCS, IRL the BAS 60 & 90 was on the contrary quite complex and perhaps maybe not so mobile as the video & DCS would point out to simulate. Greatly simpliefied, one can say the system consists of 4 different setups of airbases. #1. Peacetime Airbases (Airwings) These would be the bases or "Flotillas" Swedish Air Force normally operate from during peacetime. At its peak 1950-1960´s, Swedish Air Force had around 17 Airwings and about 1000 aircraft divided to about 50 squadrons. To counter the initial vulnerability of a massive airstrike, some of these airbases had a vast underground hangar complexes. Enitre squadrons and their aircraft were stored underground where there were maintenance facilities, vehicles and equipment for the aircraft. Think of the mines of Moria but replace the gold with planes + weapons and the dwarfs with officers and conscripts and you would know what I mean. ;) #2. Intermediate Airbases In addition to the existing Airbases / Flottilas, there was a runway system in the very near vincinity of the base with a complex road system (both taxiways, main runways, backup runway, parking spots for aircraft, bunker system with command centres, logistical centres etc. The system also functioned from time to time as emergency runways. Some of these runways were used as normal roads during peactime, some were off limits. #3. Warbase These airbases were purely functioning as a hidden airbase system and would be much similar to #2. All required infrastructure was more or less in place. Only Planes Personel and Vehicles needed to be transferred there. Their locations could be very much remote and could be very difficult to attack. During the 70´s and late 80´s the BAS 60 & BAS 90 system were subject to extensive military exercises. It was not uncommon for regular civilian car traffic to be stopped for a Viggen coming into land or crossing when coming in on a taxiway etc. #4. Improvised Airbase As a last resort, the system could be functioning in a total mobile scenario much like indicated in this video. However the endurance and ability to deploy a great number of Viggens in such a venture would be very limited. The backbone of the system was #2 & #3 in a wartime scenario. There the operability of the Viggens and the tempo of how many aircraft could be deployed were actually increased compared to operating from #1! Except from the trees being a little bit close to the runway, and that you came in a little bit too low initially (normally you would see the runway before you took out the gear) your video was spot on! Although the AJS37 is a remarkable aircraft, it saddens me that the interdiction/fighter version (JA37) is not included in the Viggen Module. It had a more powerful engine, tracking radar and A2A armament with automatic cannon as standard. And just as the AJS Viggen, perhaps it´s most useful "weapon" was that it had a quick turnaround time on the ground, bar none. Sometime in the future, I hope that I get more time available to fly the Viggen. I look forward seeing more of your videos. Keep up the great work!

Sorry, Not "Interdictor", I got my head into the Tornado where ADF and Interdictor was similar to the JA and AJS. My bad.

Love your videos, highly informative, as Always. I'm from Sweden and old enough to have done my military service at the same time as Viggen was in active service.

1:34 "Especially for countries with smaller airforces" -Dude, the Swedish airforce was the fourth largest in the world... And BTW, the Viggen started out as a VTOL project.

Very informative video and good narration. One small tip to further reduce the workload during takeoff is to set the gear lever to its UP position before starting the takeoff roll. When the plane sense that there is no weight on the wheels, they will automatically be raised. Helps shaving a couple seconds off getting cleaned up. I haven´t noticed any adverse effect in loss of lift as the flaps are raised. :)

Didn’t know the Viggen could go into reverse. Very informative about the plane. Though I was waiting for the reverse beeping. Lol.

May I ask if there is a reason you don't upload these videos in 60fps and instead seem to favour 30fps? They are still amazing regardless this channel is a real gem I love these videos! :)

Mostly because of limited space on my SSD and the time it takes to process and upload. When i upgrade my PC and get another SSD i might go to 60.

That would be wonderful, it's so much more comfortable to watch videos in 60 fps, it should really be the standard ^^ It's fairly weird that many games like tend to have cut scenes running in 30 fps instead of 60, as it is noticeably low.
