My favorite thing about the MiG-21 is how if you turn hard while going very fast, you keeping going in the same direction, instead of actually turning, so you can be flying in one direction while pointing in another for a little while.

Did some reading of an interview with a former 4477 TES pilot. He said they used to use that to their advantage against students, and that the 21 was considered a joy to fly even though they had no idea what most of the systems in it did. I've certainly had a great time with it so far in DCS!

5 Years Later: I am in the market for my first DCS MiG. Glad I came across this old video. In comparison to the DCS MiG-15 and MiG-19, the MiG-21 is pulling ahead. Thanks to the Free For all event at Eagle Dynamics this month, I can try before I Fly. I hope you get a chance to try some new modules and post some updates if you find the time. Cheers

@StanCanCount YT I did get both the MiG-19 and MiG-21. Ironically today I just installed the MiG-21 Cockpit mod pack - Green/Gray/Black both in English & Russian, just to freshen things up a bit. Mod is in DCS User Download files from HAWKCZ6 .

This video made me subscribe. This is just the way a review should be like. Thoughtful coverage of the objective features of the dlc, some bloopers, attention to detail and then some emotion (flying, plus music)... Would enjoy more DCS with commentary.

I agree with your opinion about this module. I find it demanding to fly, but very rewarding once you get used to it.. Despite being a "simple" aircraft, it has a lot of systems to master. It is very very far from today's "glass cockpits". Huge workload, non existant ergonomics, but ... hell, I fell in love with it the minute I started running the checkists to start her up. Lately I've found that I enjoy more flying vintage aircrafts than the new ones (not only in DCS).

So Jive's an airliner pilot? Well, I guess that explains a lot! Would be awesome to be sitting in a plane and have his voice come on the PA. And by "awesome" I mean "terrifying". Grab the sick bag and get ready for a wild ride.

+ReddyDutch Make sure you are carrying enough power until mains touch the ground. There's a marker in the throttle (SPS in english "CNC" in russia) that is the minimum power for Boundary Layer Control to work. The plane drops very violently at flare without BLC unless you come in _fast_. Make sure both N1 and N2 needles are minimum of 70% until ~touchdown.

I didn't like the lancer at first, but as I developed as a DCS simmer the challenge of flying an outdated aircraft became more appealing. It's a very raw experience, really feels like flying compared to more modern FBW aircraft. However, it is less capable, if you're new and just want to hit your target, it probably isn't for you. It's really more for someone who wants to really test themselves in the sim, and it will do that really well, with the appropriate reward.

The beginning of this video (hearing your input on virtual flying, from a pilots perspective) is really interesting to me. for me, flying in real life didn't live up to the joy that i got from games like DCS. I flew float planes for about a year until i finally came to the conclusion that i enjoyed flight more as a virtual hobby than a real life hobby or career choice. Weird how things work.

Fun fact: The radar is cooled by what is essentially vodka, which is why it only works for 25 minutes. After it runs out of vodka coolant the radar overheats until it fails.

+Tentacles I enjoyed studying Black Shark manual. Same thing with mi-21. The sim got even more enjoyable when I finally jumped into the cockpit with all the knowledge I've gained. IMHO learning the aircraft is the most fun part of the sim. Learning is not fun when you have expectations. Stop thinking about the result and time required to get there and enjoy the moment. This principle actually applies to every sphere of our life. When people get older they fall out of reality by constantly thinking about the future or past. "Children have neither a past nor a future. Thus they enjoy the present, which very few of us do." -Jean de la Bruyere “True happiness is... to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future.” ―Lucius Annaeus Seneca

DCS Mig-21 is finally a jet fighter that thrills you!. take offs and especially landings are not too easy, but very manageable, you really see how your skills get better all the time. I don't find it too fun for a pure serious dogfighting machine, too much to control imo for my stick and keyboard. I have FC3 F15 for that.

It's great to see the weight of ordinance taken into account. Over Lybia in 2011 the French Mirages we worked alongside could only drop on two targets at a time because their ordinance was wing mounted and caused too much of a roll to be able to land on the trap on the CDG Carrier. p.s. I can't place your accent.

Wow, you did this quite a while ago. Late to the party as usual I guess. Anyhow, great vid. Loved the landing part! Now that it’s almost 2019, ED is making it hard to keep up. After the F5, F15, P51, and F18, I bought the A10C. That’s where the learning STOPPED (my god, I can’t even start it). I’ve wanted to try the helos and and the MiG 21 looks like great; but with the release of the Tomcat THEN the F16 after THAT, I feel like there’s just not enough time on earth to learn them all. But a man can try! Thanks.

Personal Pilots license I think takes about 30 - 40 hours instructed flight experience. A little hobby airport near me charges about £200-250 per hour depending on the plane you choose. It's expensive, but not just a rich man's thing. Flying lessons are really fun, and so even if you never get a pilot's license, you can still fly quite a few times in your life without making yourself poor. I'm certainly gonna do it.

The Mig21bis is exceptionally good at low speed high angle of attack flying in DCS just as the USAF testing of MIg21 shows in real world. "maneuvering capabilities and behavior/handling at low speeds described as "class above competition"" "Maneuverability of modern fighter is measured by how slow it can fly and how high angle of attack it can sustain and still turn. During some war situations, US evaluation and Aggressor use, MiG-21 has shown it can keep pace with modern planes...During MiG testing, it was clear that U.S. pilots have not relied on Soviet pilot's manuals or they did not have one at the beginning. That is why the aircraft ability was fully exploited... The report of a MiG-21F shows nothing particularly unusual, except for maneuvering capabilities and behavior/handling at low speeds described as "class above competition".Besides that, if competitors tried to follow MiG-21F at high alpha, their engine experienced shutdown or compressor stall. MiG could perform "hammerhead" turn (wingover/stall turn/renversement) at 100 knots (knot = 1.852 km/h), figure where at the end ofthe vertical climb pilot add rudder (with the opposite aileron and forward stick) to push the plane in the dive. Rudder is effective from 30 knots. With the stick fully backward, the plane flies at 210 km/h, the rolling oscillations are present, but there is no lift breakdown or the tendency towards spin." www.slideshare.net/mishanbgd/mi-g-21-and-fighter-maneuverability-in-todays-terms

According to "Red Eagles", you are right:) The only plane who could dance behind an MiG-21 parked on its tail with the flaps down and on AB was the F/A-18, and that only if the pilot knew how to do it. All other planes could not maintain the attitude at that low speed and had to break away so the MiG-21 waxed their fannies as they were trying to leave. Also, the plane was VERY small and hard to see. Interesting also how the MiG-23 behaved.

Yes I really, really want a DCS Mig23! More than any other plane. They say it was actually very challenging to fly. So I'm not sure about commercial pilots, but for combat pilots they train specifically to use the rudder as roll control at low speeds as very low speed manoeuvring is a common part of dogfighting. Of course A all modern aircraft take care of this with the flight computer anyway so its not particularly needed, but back in the Mig-21 it seems essential to learn. But seriously, why would an EF2000 or F-16 pilot need to learn about how to fly without a flight computer when they are taught to eject if all 4 of the redundant flight systems are down. Anyway it is what it is.

Hey Jive I am torn between getting the MiG-21bis and the FC3 for the SU-27/33s. Which one would be worth it to purchase? Personally I like how the MiG-21bis has a large assortment of A2G weapons while maintaining the A2A capabilities, but I am a bit torn as the A2A is supposedly sub-par. With the SU-27 series I am torn with that as I love the look of the cockpit and I think trying a new non-american system would be fun, of course I could do that with the MiG-21bis. What tears me though is that it is not a full simulation like the MiG-21bis. I aspire to be a pilot when I am out of schooling so of course I want to choose a good module aside from the three I already have (A-10C, UH-1H, and F-15C). Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

If you're into it for the air to air then I would say FC3. Even without being full fidelity it's still a lot of fun. If you enjoy the F-15 more than than the A-10 then you'll probably like the the Su-27 more than the MiG-21. Personally I prefer the MiG-21 product because it's multi-role and lends itself well to co-op but it's not universally better than the other modules.

Thanks, I decided on the MiG after taking with some buddies, the A2G should be gun and when shooting down enemy A2G aircraft that will be great too, thanks!

Very nice video, interesting and informative. I'd like your opinion of the SU-27 vs the MiG-21, if you have had experience with both. I had an early hardcore SU-27 sim back in the late 80s or early 90s and liked it for the realistic flight model, instrumentation and controls. Do you think that the DCS SU-27 is as accurate and realistic as the MiG-21 or the MiG-15? What I'm interested in is the opposite of an arcade game type sim, as I'm willing to put in the time and effort necessary to learn the systems and controls. I have flown the original Falcon 4.0 and like the design philosophy of the F-16 but in flying the F-16 I felt that the computer was the real pilot and I was just a passenger flipping the right sequence of switches. I have also flown X-plane and like the realism and accuracy but the civilian aircraft get boring after awhile. Thanks again for your efforts.

Hi Jim. Although you can buy it on it's own the Su-27 is part of the Flaming Cliffs 3 package. Whilst the flight model is decent it doesn't have a full clickable cockpit like the more complete individual modules. I really enjoy the Su-27 and I wouldn't call it arcadey but it's much more 'pick up and play' than a fuller module like the MiG-21. If you're interested in something more analogue than the F-16 I'd suggest the DCS Viggen module (I have a video on that too). Let me know what you decide on!

+JiveDilettante Thanks, was wondering what you used for rudder. I am still in the darkages with my CH combatstick using the keyboard for rudder. Makes playing BOS terrifying, and it one of the reasons I have not gotten the -21bis for DCS.

I have some questions about your career choice. I do have a passion of aviation. I've had so ever since i was little, and had kind of a bad experience with my ears during a trip to Mallorca. Since then I've gained a sort of fear-respect for planes (ærefrygt in Danish, don't know if there is an English translation), that lead to the developing of my passion and I'm often flying in FSX. I'm now considering to become a pilot, probably cargo or something along those lines. I am now curious to know the biggest drawbacks, and the good things about being a pilot. Cheers from Denmark :)

I have an awesome name Your question really deserves a more comprehensive answer than I can give in a KZbin comment but in a nutshell the drawbacks are early starts and the good things are that it's such a complex and diverse role. Before I was flying for an airline I always assumed that being a pilot meant that you turn up and fly a plane, that was it. In reality it boils down to being the sole responsible party so you often find yourself getting involved with every aspect of the operation eg. identifying and correcting mistakes with loading instructions, fuelling errors, passenger issues etc. The job, especially as a skipper, becomes less about 'flying' and much more about managing a task (the flight) and all of it's many variables whilst operating between the lines of company procedures, regulations and legal obligations. There are good days and bad days of course, both have their own unique rewards and challenges. If you feel passionate about aviation then go for it, the industry is expanding again, it's an enjoyable way to earn a living that you can only properly appreciate first hand.

Thank you for the answer! I have yet to decide if I'm willing to sacrifice holidays and such and push my circadian rhythm. That said i think that the rewards of the job equalize with the drawbacks. Again, thanks a lot for the answer!

Such an awesome aircraft, too bad I have to wait a couple of weeks for the steam release. I would buy it from ED but their DRM system doesn't like the steam version and I don't want to risk it. Another case of DRMs hurting the customer instead of the pirate.
