I used a combination STAR and BUS to optimize my DCS.

I've constructed several (temporary) intermediate sized layouts over the years, the largest with a 28 foot run with DCS and have always used 16g wire. I have also never wired in "star" fashion as recommended but ran traditional bus lines with 18g feeders every 5 or 6 feet. This arrangement always seemed to work well, consistently resulting #10-level track signal strength in all areas of the layouts. As you said, the smaller sized wire certainly makes for nicer solder joints to the rails. Everyone seems to preach the need for at least 14g wire runs so I appreciate you sharing your success with the smaller gauge wire.
