I just remembered that I bought an AIU off ebay! LOL> Forgot about that. I'm still working out the tracks. Far from setting up scenery. I wish there were reference charts provided by MTH on best practices for various layout types. Too many opinions and very few align. :) I'm going with 16 gauge, with 14 Gauge drops to the 'loop'. (I think). Still working on how I'll switch the yard blocks. Not all my trains are going to be DCS. Want all options open and a flexible setup. Eventually, maybe I'll go all DCS to make my life simply. Who knows.
@marcsoscaletrains2 күн бұрын
Well, when it comes to conventional running on the same tracks as digital, you could probably give me an education on that as I don't run conventional. If you are running your power for digital through an MTH DCS system, then running the drops through a terminal strip like I have (I've found anyway) is really the best way to feed track blocks if you in fact want to run track blocks. For a 14 x 14 layout assuming that you are running ovals, you could split the oval up run into around 8 blocks, say every 6' - 7' and be good. No need to run anything but 16awg wire unless you want to, but there's really no need. For the terminal strips Miller Engineering has some at good prices. Let me know how you make out. This is the fun part, enjoy! :)

@@marcsoscaletrainsI'll let you know how it goes. I suspect there will be a lot of trail and error. (mostly error) . Good advice. I've heat the 6' section advise prior. Only reason I was thinking 18gauge drops(I said 14, opps) was the large wire for the mains, and then the drops to each section are thinner wires. It's easier to put the clips on the thinner wires to the little ears under the fastrack. Yes, I'm using Fastrack. LOL. First go at O gauge. To be honest, I ran the outer loop, and 2nd loop from one power point. This was on conventional. Some power drops, but it ran! So I'd imagine once I get some proper drops put in, it will be golden. Guess we'll see. Thanks again. Loving your channel. Keep up the beautiful work. That's some VERY neat wiring! I'm not able to go that route as this will be moved in about 2 years to a new home. So, won't go too crazy. Hoping next home, I'll do something more like your 50' layout. Stuck renting for 2 years after a divorce. BOOOOO. LOL. Take care.
@Curious_Skeptic2 күн бұрын
I am working on a 14 x 14. (Much smaller than yours, lol) I'm so lost on whether I need to loop the power and pull splits off that? Or, do I bring each drop back to the bus bar like you? On top of everything else, I have four block loops. This is so I can run conventional or DCS. I will be setting up the ability to set each loop to be controlled by DCS or direct to the ZW conventional set up. It's going to be a mess. LOL. Anyway... Just curious what your thinking is. I've heard so much contradicting info. Seems like they ALL work just fine. LOL.

What do you mean that's how you get power from base 3 to the track?. According to mth mike wolf the serial/usb cord that has not hit the shelves yet and the adapter is needed
@marcsoscaletrainsАй бұрын
My entire layout is powered from my Z4000 transformers which go to my MTH TIU, then out of my TIU into terminal strips that run both Center rail and common wires to the tracks. This powers the layout. The Lionel Base 3 just needs power and ground going to the tracks which though my DCS system is already there, so I take ground wire ( white wire you see on bottom left) from the Base 3 and run it to the TIU fixed 1 ground input and then from the output side I use the jumper wire to go from fixed 1 to output fixed 2 on the TIU. Basically, the base 3 is piggybacking off the MTH power and grounds wires. The base 3 works flawlessly this way. I think what Mike is saying is if you want to run Legacy engines from your TIU and DCS app you'll need the cable. I don't use my DCS app to run my Lionel Legacy engines. I have 2 iPad's, one I use for the DCS App and the other I use for the Base 3. Keep in mind the jumper wire is just jumping the ground from fixed 1 to fixed 2. Fixed 1 on my layout is my main track line and fixed 2 is my second track line. They are both powered from separate sides of the Z4000 transformer. In theory, I could have taken the white ground wire you see coming from the base 3 and split it to run over to the fixed input #2 on the bottom right, but I chose to just do the small jumper you see above. Not sure if that helps any.

Why are you having a wire on the WTIU jumping from 1 ground 2 the other with a red wire? Or is it from red to red wire jumping with a singal red wire why is that?
@marcsoscaletrainsАй бұрын
Those wires are from the Lionel Legacy base 3 system that I also run. That is how I get the power to the track for the Lionel system.

This new unit has built in WIFI that allows you to run the trains from the MTH app that is available. Head on over to MTH Trains to learn more, or you can find a ton of videos on KZbin. Marc...new subscriber here from Maine. I find your videos informative. Keep'em rolling please. A question on plywood... I'm putting together a 16' x 8' layout. Four sheets of plywood placed but not permanently attached on four 8' tables. Therefore I'm looking for plywood that won't warp and remain level. Would OSB be suffice or do you recommend something more solid ? I'm strictly conventional, four loops, four Z1000 transformers for now. Thank you for your advice. 👍
@marcsoscaletrainsАй бұрын
I think it depends on your location, humidity etc. Plywood would probably be best in your case as it is pretty dense and if it's lying flat it shouldn't warp. It would be best to screw it down just to make certain it doesn't, but I'd wait and see. You can always throw some screws down if it does start to warp, but I don't think it will. Appreciate the comment.
