I have not flown my F-18 Lot 20 Aircraft in the Eagle Dynamics DCS World flight simulator in over four years. Can I still perform a cold start-up? Taxi and launch from an aircraft carrier? I have no idea. So let's find out.

WELL DONE! I haven't started with jets yet although I do have the F/A-18, F-14s, etc in my Hanger...I must say, without intending to probably, you just provided one of the best cold start tutorials I have seen...taking your time, being methodical and showing the panels...I could be wrong but I thought an aircraft carrier deck is about 75ft above the water line...anyway, enjoyed...

Hey Capt. Oscar Mike, You and I are about the same age. I flew the Microsoft Combat simulator 1, 2 and 3 then IL 2 Sturmovik from about 2003 to 2011 then gave it up till 2024 . I knew nothing about DCS back then so when I started with DCS I started from scratch. Like you I struggle with short term memory loss. Which is one of the many reasons I came back to combat flight simulation. I first bought the F-14 Tomcat. I was overwhelmed with everything I had to learned from key mapping to what was essential to learning to fly the air craft. So I gave up on the F-14. I switched to something I was more familiar with WWII aircraft. I’m now having a lot more success. I still have a whole lot to learn., but I’m now excited and encouraged. Sometime in the future I hope to come back to Naval aviation. I’m just glad to see someone my age having the same interest. If you should happen to read this I hope you’ll contact me, I’d love to talk to you. Until then HAPPY FLYING. HOPE YOU ANSWER.

I am learning the P-47. Unlike a jet, the warbirds don't need an airfield to take off from. You can build your own airfield on any map as long as it's a spot level enough to take off from. I landed and then took off from Pagan Island on the Marianas Map!

UNBELIEVABLE!!! I commented and subscribed last week. I have been offered a job in Sitka with the Medical Center but still debating. One of the things I was most concerned with is internet connection or speed for many reasons with DCS near the top. I have about half of the modules but only a lowly TM T.16000M FCS HOTAS AND PEDALS. I never would have guessed you were into DCS and not only into it but have nice peripherals. I'm sure you are familar with Enigma, Growling SideWinder and other channels. I'm a lifelong Southerner but am confident I will be able to assimilate easy enough...In addition to internet speeds I'm having a difficult time researching areas where I can rent for 3-6 months before I purchase....but so far, I have not been able to locate any options that I feel comfortable with. You may be a retired military pilot or a General Aviation pilot but have not seen or heard you speak about that on any of your videos. I've been a pilot for more than 30 years passing my first checkride and earning my PPL in 1993. At this point in my life, DCS and IL-2 will be the only flying I do with interest in MSFS 2024 at some point. Anycase, I am eager to watch your video and if have any insight regarding places I should look or any contacts to find out more about what's available I would appreciate...also interested in what your internet speed is. Currently, I have Gig-Internet/Fiber-Optic with ~1000mbps speed. Lastly, I will learn if you use head tracking of any sort and if not I do have a few suggestions since you have a webcam that would be free...Opentrack...I use Opentrack with Smoothtrack due to using my iphone for headtracking. What a pleasant surprise. I wish you luck but have a feeling you will not need any. Take care. ps. I'm sure you are aware DCS has made major strides in the past 4 years with many new modules, maps and campaigns in addition to graphics, optimization and multi-threading to allow systems to process the program more efficiently.

I don't multiplayer, I Fly in DCS in the offline mode only now. Internet in Sitka? You have only two options GCI or Star Link. Housing? Expensive and hard to find. Cost of living? 30% higher than most of lower 48. I am still flying some in DCS. I fly the Mosquito and A4-E Skyhawk. I enjoy the Syria Map the most. To simplify things I have gone back to using my older TM.16000M. I could never use Pedals due to my condition of legs and feet (Stiff Person Syndrome). I looked at MSFS 2024. The terrain is off color and too cartoonish for me. The terrain for S.E. Alaska is just plain terrible with missing lakes, rivers, and funky mountains. If you show up in Sitka, I may consider selling my Orion 2 HOTAS. It's over kill for what I am still able to do.

VR is over-rated for DCS! It's impossible to see your keyboard for any controls that may not be bound to your HOTAS. Just starting out myself, however I went to head tracking after trying VR and haven't looked back. You're doing great!

Hard no. Nothing compares to the immersion of VR if your machine can handle it. Get yourself a decent HOTAS and some switch boards if needed. Muscle memory is a thing. It all costs money, but you pay for the best experience.

I put rough Velcro on buttons so I can feel them, I don’t fly jets so don’t need so many buttons I suppose. But isn’t there a clickable cockpit in VR, you just look at a switch till the cursor is on it and then use the mouse to operate it? You don’t need any buttons for those functions.

I removed a x56 throttle controller’s moving parts and mounted all the controls (buttons switches and encoders) on a polycarbonate sheet painted black. I made a cut around the top side of he enclosure plastic left only 10 mm to be able to mount the polycarbonate on the top of the casing. Now I have an additional control I can map like a x56 throttle controller. Placed aft to my warthog throttle controller and voila I have much more controls I ever need. And no sir, vr isn’t overrated. Playing dcs on 2d screen is the lamest thing ever. Vr provides such an immersion, even my stomach lifts up and down during some maneuvres. Also head tracker is a cheat for pussies. I play in a built rig and it is surprising how difficult to look back. not the completely unrealistic 180 degree like headtracker users do but even130-140 degree is almost impossible without using the seat to grap and pull your body to the side. Such realism is night and day for me. Il play dcs for its realism. And vr gives a good 70% to that realism.

@@MaverickM1 my vr setup cost me £6000 and I don’t regret a penny of it. I’ve tried head tracking but if you wear reading glasses like me then you are always looking out the corner of your eye when looking behind and it’s fuzzy. In VR I can look in any direction clearly and never lose sight of the target in a dogfight

I'm 49. You know more than me. I never learned cold start or any of air to ground munitions. I just do carrier landings with super carrier. It's too complicated without a printed manual. KZbin videos are too time consuming. Only aircraft I know in and out is the a10. I do vr. I love it. Can't go back to head tracker
