Great upload! And the backstory you give in the description is insightful. I've never read that book Phil wrote-partly because I'm a biased fan of Kobe. But also because I never understood how Phil could criticize Kobe so much after all the stuff he put up with from MJ and the other stars on the Bulls. Thinking about it now, it seems like Phil was bothered that Kobe didn't revere him or defer to him the way other star players did. I've heard Jim Gray speak about how much Kobe disliked the media games Phil would play, which is probably why he shunned Phil during their first run together. That time in Kobe's career is fascinating, I wish he was here to say more about it.

Thanks for the feedback as always. I totally hear you. So interesting to see how theyre relationship transpired from the first stint to the 2nd from 06-11. Its hard to believe Phil came back just 1 season later after literally saying he wouldnt coach Kobe again. Also said that he suggested having him traded around 2000-01 to pheonix for kidd and marion. Its a very interesting book and reveals alot, and alot more than just the conflict. I remember one thing that stood out was Phil genuinely had trouble thinking they had a chance beating san antonio in the playoffs. After coming back down 0-2, after fisher’s miracle shot in g5 and winning 4 straight, tex winter goes “i cant believe we beat this team 4 times in a row.” Phil “i can’t believe it either.”

@@dcshow Alright, you've sold me. I just bought the book. It definitely sounds like a good read. And yeah, the shift in Kobe and Phil's relationship is interesting. I've watched some interviews Kobe did in 2006 where he talks about not holding a grudge against Phil and speaking to him much more often than before. It takes a lot of maturity to work closely with and trust someone after they say the things Phil said.

glad to hear that. The book is definitely worth it. Good for Kobe for not holding a grudge. That also showed with shaq as eventually they repaired their relationship. Kobe was always a franchise player but never a true leader until that 2nd phil stint. Really showed in 2008. Much more receptive, friendlier, approachable, extroverted side seemed existent. Even before pau got there the lakers were 30-16. Can’t uplift guys alienating them as he’d been known to do.

@@dcshow that's true, he grew as a leader and teammate going into his last 3 trips to the Finals. I've heard unfavorable stories about him from the days with Shaq, but the flaws he had then are understandable when you analyze the position he was in. He came into NBA as a teenager when it was really a grown-man's league. The age difference and the fact that he'd spent so much of his childhood away from the US made it hard for Kobe to connect with his teammates or lead them. His brashness and ambitions probably rubbed them the wrong way too. And after he'd proven himself as a player, he was still undermined by a power struggle with Shaq and Phil. All of this, plus the sense of being an outsider both in Italy and the US, in my opinion led Kobe to isolate himself in those early years. His situation was much different than other stars of his caliber that got empowered as soon as they joined the league.

Very well said and analyzed. It seems all of those factors contributed shaping him not only as a person but as a result also how he played basketball.
