I would really like to see a video, if you can do one, of a similar set up like this, where the tent has a floor, but is not attached to a tree? The kind of set up that I could use in a field without trees nearby. Using only 1 tarp like this for the tent and floor.
@andreasmulleroutdoor24525 ай бұрын
@@IdahoEagle77 I understand. The solution is simple. It is the same way. Instead of the tree you take a branch or a pole and fix it with a rope. All you need is one more peg. It is absolutly stabil - it works . Or you take two ropes and pegs to stabilize it. So you get a bunker 😎.

This has been my favorite pitch for a long time. You can also use a tripod and hang it, or a bipod at the small door end on the exterior and a ridge pole inside the tarp/tent. This is a great pitch for winter in snow, high winds or heavy rain. In nicer weather you can open the long side up to any positions you choose. You need another pole, bipod or tripod. I don’t pitch like this, up against a tree. I choose to use that end for my doorway. I like a heavy weight vinyl 14’x16’ tarp for winter/snowy conditions and I pitch it so I end up with a large mud room at the entryway. Wet, muddy gear and boots or a wet, stinky dog go there. It gives a mud room of about 2’x8’. This is where you most want to use an external bipod and interior ridgepole. I guy out the two long triangular sides in their middles to give more interior space and help resist the wind from pushing in the sides and the flapping noises are reduced. With the right amount of tie outs on your tarp, you can actually pull a stout ridgeline between a tree and a strong stake in the ground and hang the tarp in this configuration. Finding a tree with a horizontal limb in the right place works too but are hard to find. The bipod and ridgepole though is hard to beat. Especially on a 10’x10’ tarp. Of course I’m speaking of car/truck camping with the 14’x16’ tarp but I learned this pitch with an 11’x11’ cheap plastic tarp and a square tarp makes it very simple. I’ve used a 7’x9’ plastic tarp and it’s a little tight but for one person or an emergency shelter…you have a floor, a door and the lesser interior volume is easier to conserve your body heat. If you have a square tarp, give this pitch a try. You’ll like it. Once you know how, you’ll figure out how to do it with a rectangular tarp. I create airflow by leaving a loose flap on the door’s bottom corner and I use whatever I find to prop up a small opening near the far end. I’m old now, no more backpacking. Using a heavy tarp and a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet on the floor, I can have a small table, cot, stool and all my gear inside and a gas lantern and single burner gas stove provide enough warmth to get out of bed on cold winter mornings. I’ve seldom seen anyone on KZbin show this pitch. On the smaller, square tarps, all you need is one pole at the doorway and properly placed guy lines and plenty of stakes. Nobody likes to re-pitch a tarp or tent because foul weather messed it up. The only drawback of this pitch is that tarps like you use here, are expensive and a bit delicate. Not really designed to walk or crawl on, easy to poke a stick or rock through and ruin a good tarp. Thanks for sharing this video, it’s nearly impossible to explain it without showing it. 👍👍✌️🇺🇸

Funnily enough, I came up with this design by myself only to find a couple videos including this where others have come up with it too! It is surprising that it is not more well known and apparently does not have a name. The only disadvantage I can see in this tarp is that the closure alogn the length may allow bugs or even rain to get in. It's the persian flaw of an otherwise pretty incredible design. It is also great that the slumping bit is also the exact centre, which is where the only non-side loop is located on my tarp.
@andreasmulleroutdoor24522 ай бұрын
This setup is nearly a bunker. I never had problems with rain or bugs. From my point of view there is just one thing to note: you better use a synthetic sleeping bag, because you will touch the walls (especially 3 by 3 m setup). In rain with a goose down sleeping bag you will have no fun.
@JacobSigstein2 ай бұрын

If you stake the "tree corner" of the floor slightly away from the camera, the front wall can be staked down slightly outside the floor (requires extra stake). Then add an extra stake at the center of the front wall, also a few inches outside the floor. Now any water which drips off the front wall will not run down onto the floor.

How do you keep the rain out of the floor?
@andreasmulleroutdoor24522 жыл бұрын
I often used this shelter in continuous rain the whole night and never had any problems. With very heavy rain i have no experience. There are to notice the same things as for a normal tent. The choise of the place should not be in a sink and you can use a groundsheet.

It seems like it is possible to make a similar shelter with a rectangular tarp as well. Did you try that?
@andreasmulleroutdoor2452Ай бұрын
No I didn‘t try it with a rectangular tarp. I just worked with a 3 by 3 m or 3,5 by 3,5 m square tarp. I think your question is worthfull to try it next weekend. But I believe it will not work with a 3 by 2 m tarp ( not enough room ) and a 4 by 3 m tarp would be to too big. Perfect square tarp is the 3 m tarp for this setup.

@@andreasmulleroutdoor2452 I tried to show the shape in this video, what do you think? kzbin.infoT0djhP1Iwy0

@@andreasmulleroutdoor2452 The ground area will be a triangle with length equal to the longest side of the tarp and the depth equal to half of that, so ground area will be half of that of the tarp total. The height will be half of the shortest side. So a 4 by 3 will have height 1.5 and 6 square meters floor!

Can I make it stable with a trekking pole instead of the tree?
@andreasmulleroutdoor24522 ай бұрын
Yes it works. Even with just one rope. If you take two ropes you get a bunker 😎.
@alphashot3910Ай бұрын
would this work with a 3x3m tarp and would it be roomy enough for a pack and a 6ft person?
@andreasmulleroutdoor2452Ай бұрын
On trekking tours I use a 3x3 m tarp as my standard for this setup, because of the weight . I am 180 cm tall and it works perfect inclusive pack. But you will sometimes touch the walls with your sleeping bag. So you better choose a synthetic sleeping bag or you protect your goose material with a bivy.
