Fantastic video. Got everything working very quickly. I think the downvotes are coming from people who don't understand that you need to use a crossover cable versus a regular cable. You need to use a crossover cable vs a regular patch cable to connect two like devices (router to router, switch to switch, pc to pc, etc),

great video, it worked the first time without any problems. i setup a pfsense and am using an old linksys wrt54g from the basement that already had dd wrt on it from a long time ago. using it for attaching my printer and some raspberry pi projects. thanks for the still relevant video!

Great Work! After trying a repeater bridge setup with my Cisco E4200 router I had unusable latency and transfer speeds so created dual AP's at 2.4 and 5Ghz using your info and love the results! I ordered a TP-Link AV500 powerline kit to use with my Archer C7 router and new AP to hopefully create a nice strong signal at the far end of my house where gaming and streaming movies happens lots. I am not sure what all your setting changes did but learned a lot in the process.

I"VEHAD8CUPSOFCOFFEEBUTOHMYGODYOUTALKFAST! Just used this to set up my router in 2018 and the instructions are still solid! Posting from the WRT router for this post. The views do need to pay close attention! You can see which tabs he's on if you watch closely- sometimes he names them, sometimes he doesn't. You will also need some basic networking knowledge- which you would need any way if you're trying to reflash and use an open source code. I guess some people just want to be spoon-fed everything. Full disclosure I'd tried several times before to set up the WRT router, but this video is what got it up and running.

Thanks for this video. It was helpful but I have a couple suggestions: 1) your audio is really bad- it sounds like the gain on your microphone might be cranked WAY up and the levels are peaking, and 2) try to slow your cadence down a step or two while talking. If you take your time and don’t rush through, it definitely is more accessible to your audience. Thanks!

At the beginning of the video you specify ethernet cable from lan to lan (ports). At the end you specify cross over cable. While technically, any rj45 is considered an ethernet cable. the common use of ethernet cable is understood to be lan cable, not crossover. That is the only thing I'd suggest you clear up. Otherwise, the video is awesome. Thanks.

Honestly I wouldn't matter. Since almost every router that would be in use today will have auto switching or sensing or whatever TF it is called.
@FlannyBagJuggle8 жыл бұрын
Don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure you matter to someone some where ;). Joking aside, there are still many units in use out there,that don't have auto-mdix technology. This is especially true in countries other than the U.S. Additionally, there is still debate on whether using the incorrect cable (requiring the auto-mdix function) slows throughput. My own tests have provided mixed results, and I prefer to err on the side of caution. Edit: I still have several routers in use that will not adjust if I use a cross over cable to connect a pc to the router. And keep in mind, routers were not intended as AP's. This function later became supported as more and more small businesses (and home users) started "jerry rigging" things so they didn't have to buy expensive equipment.

Great tutorial. Using a DD-wrt installed Linksys wrt54gl router. My wired speed is fine (65 Mbps), but for wireless I only get 11-15 Mbps. Tried with different wifi devices, got same results. Tweaked channel number, transmit power, security settings, network mode, SPI disabled, WMM off etc. Any other suggestions I can try?

my main router feeds a data port on the wall in my office. Can i use that wall port to connect to this access point, or does it physically have to have to be connected to the router which is in the closet? Also, i did these steps however when i 'think' i'm finished, my entire wi-fi goes out. The computer keeps trying to "identify" the internet.....what could cause this? Thanks again for the video.

@jay-og-99126 жыл бұрын
AirSoftMaverick3232 no, you want to be able to choose which one you’re on. Otherwise you’ll have no clue of which is which and you might be on the furthest away router thereby defeating the whole purpose 😉

I disabled the WAN connection type and also disabled the DHCP Server as you described in the video and immediately afterwards I was unable to access my router. When I type the IP address of the router the page won't load. I'm still able to connect to it but just unable to access it to log in and make any modifications. Any idea how I can get back in there? I have tried numerous hard resets but that didn't seem to change a thing.
@dsmall2410 жыл бұрын
Ubirajara Theodoro Thanks, Ubirajara. I tried numerous times to reset the router but finally just ended up buying a new better router with DD-WRT pre-installed.
@againstthemodernworld32536 жыл бұрын
Try the "30 second reset" and if it doesn't work, use the "30-30-30" reset if you get jammed up. There are instruction on the WRT wiki page. The 30-30-30 usually cure all.

Would this work to keep the same SSID as the main wlan? If I was connected via wifi to my main wireless router in room A and moved to room B where this AP is setup would it be doing wireless handoff so that I dont need to switch SSID everytime I move to a different room? Thnx!
@FlannyBagJuggle8 жыл бұрын
+xTheShady1x I know this is late, but in the unlikely event that you haven't found your answer, and for anyone else who might wonder about this as they read. Yes, it GENERALLY works with the same SSID. I have a router in my house, a standard LAN ethernet cable running out to the shed where I keep my office, lan port to lan port. The router in the shed is a netgear wndr3400 flashed with dd-wrt and configured (both frequencies) to match this video, with the exception of the overclocking, since it isn't supported in this router. Same setup, security, etc. on both routers. It's almost like a repeater that way (almost). I do have the house router on one channel and the office AP on a different channel. This CAN cause trouble if both units are too close together, & competing for connectivity with the device. The device will keep switching between units and actually slow down the speed on your device (I speak from experience).
@FlannyBagJuggle8 жыл бұрын
PS. Keep in mind that an access point is intended to function differently than a repeater.

Hello! I saw this video but remain in doubt with the DD-WRT firmware can the router where it is installed go get internet wirelessly to a main router (192.168.1.1 example) without the DD-WRT and then make the sharing of that internet also wirelessly but in another range of IP (Example 192.168.0.1)?

I don't have access to the actually modem/switches wan to see connected devices only have access to the ap (used your method to add wifi to a school classroom)

Steven - Great tutorial! I think this is essentially what I needed, but I am new to this. Is this basically going to extend my main routers wireless signal, plus give me the option to make use of the lan ports? I have a weak signal on the top floor from the downstairs main router, and I am looking to just extend my downstairs wireless signal to the DD-WRT router I have upstairs, but still use the lan ports for my other 3 computers on the DD-WRT upstairs. Is this the method that solves that issue? Pardon my ignorance of not knowing, and thanks for the tutorial!
@Browningate9 жыл бұрын
Aaron Olin The access point method described in this video will work as long as a cable connects from the secondary Linksys device you are setting up back to the main network. If you are looking to bridge and extend outside of the reach of the cable, you will want to check out the guides on setting up "Client Bridge" or "Repeater Bridge" mode.

+Aaron Olin - I'm trying to do Exactly what you are doing! Did you get yours going? I'm having trouble with the signal strength dropping off quickly on the DD router upstairs. Pulling my hair out! Comments appreciated.
@elangelmon8 жыл бұрын
+Aaron Olin Replying to your concern. You need to "waste" one of the LAN ports on the back of your upstairs router to be connected via a long cable to the downstairs router to another LAN port so they can communicate with each other. In the end you will still have 3 free ports on each of your routers so you don't have to worry (3 free ports on your upstairs router and 3 free ports on your downstairs router). Also I would recommend to get you a powerline kit so instead of using a very long ethernet cable to connect both your routers, you actually use the electricity at your home. This is the setup I am currently using and it has been worked since a year ago.

Would you help me? always used the DD WRT as a repeater without problems, but more than a year I could never make it work as a normal router, ie linking internet in Wan door for her to be router on Lan and WLan, already I tried with PPPoE and automatic DHCP and it never works, you come to get? You could make a video? already tired of pesquizar only talk about what they already know, no one talks about it

Hi, I guess basically its the same guide is this www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_access_point a few questions to ask 1) i assign my AP (2nd router) local ip address as 192.168.0.1, its ok right? The ip address is to be used to check (AP) router settings only right? 2) Where did you get the gateway ip address from? is it from the first router? must it be the same? 3) i attached my powerline connection to the AP and am able to seamlessly switch from main router to AP with excellent wifi strength. I guess all must be working right. SO i tried to 192.168.1.1 and is able to log into my main router settings. But when i typed in 192.168.0.1, it gets timed-out. Also to note is that I am not able to surf the internet. I can access my main router thru my Ap but cant get through the internet. My sense is that I am connected to my local network but not to the internet. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Way too fast. You made mistakes and you dont even know. Your gateway, you put 10 20 20 1 instead of 10 10 20 1 like you said. Dont make tutorial videos unless you plan to teach and explain instead just showing off how fast you are.

Glad I wasn't the only one that questioned that IP thing... This is a classic case of someone "giving instructions" by showing how they do it, instead of slowly explaining it step by step. It could be smoother, but it worked for me and i won't complain. (not saying you are... just that I'm happy with the vid and found it useful)
