I could never understand why the Charleston wasn't released on Blue Amberol.

Every now and then I come back to this specific video of this specific release of this song. For some reason I love THIS exact rendition of the song on this format. Go figure.

I would have to mostly agree with you. I don't know if you've heard the exact same rendition on Edison Disc but that's the only one that's better in my opinion... and of course there must be at least dozens if not hundreds of period recordings of this song.

I first heard this recording in the early 60's on an LP called "Rare Vertical Jazz" with vintage cigarette trademarks for the cover--I particularly remember one called Picayunne.

I made the video with the phonograph playing at 160 rpm which should be the proper speed. It could be that Vulcan did the transfer at a slightly different speed. I'm not sure. Thanks for your interest Matthew. It is a great tune!

To help expand your search, a slightly abbreviated arrangement was also released on Cameo under the Varsity Eight pseudonym.

Just looked all over for that version and can't locate it.

Rodorica, You can order it from the Vulcan Cylinder Record Company in the UK. The link to Vulcan is in the description for the video. You can also find it via Google search.

Actually the Charleston on a cylinder player appears strange. The cylinder machine is a ragtime era or pre jazz device.

True, but the Edison Phonograph Company made cylinder phonographs and cylinders including some dance and early Jazz through October 1929. Admittedly the format was pretty much obsolete by then.

That would explain the similarity! Although the recording I have, as already stated, has a faster tempo.

Roderica, Thank you very much! just check google for the "Vulcan Cylinder record company" For some reason youtube does not allow me to put the link into my response.

Sounds exactly like the version that the Californian Ramblers recorded; almost note for note - although the tempo is a lot slower. Good sound though, thanks for the post!

I believe this to be a cylinder copy of the Edison record you mention, however the band for this song played under the name "Golden Gate Orchestra". The California Ramblers is one of the many names that same band used over the years so it is the same group.

Sounds Great, Just a tad faster than my copy.

Thanks Lou! I use a stroboscope to make sure these videos are recorded as closely as possible to the published 160 rpm speed but Edison was not very consistent in sticking to the official speed of 160 for cylinders and 80 for Edison discs.

Other things that were abandoned for no good reason, car bumpers and running boards, womens' hats, Delaware Punch, railroads....
