My spring broke this week, and have watch half a dozen videos to learn how to repair it. This has been the best video so far. I do not understand the large number of thumbs downs. From what I can tell you covered everything.

Thank you for your kind comments, Dennis. Based on the geographic location of the clicks, we believe that a large percentage of the thumbs down were caused by a greedy, jealous competitor who has hired foreign click farms to put down competitor's videos and to promote his own videos and web site.

Dan, this has to be the by far the best video on KZbin I have ever seen. I consider myself a decent all around homeowner handyman and I have tackled just about everything from electrical to plumbing to masonry and woodworking in my home. I did have had my springs replaced a few years ago and observed the guy replace it and decided I would not attempt it myself as it looked too dangerous. Your instructions are so clear and the warnings so in place that I feel confident about replacing it myself. Congratulations on a great instructional video and thank you for sharing your knowledge.

+Vince Ciaccio Thank you for taking the time to post such kind and generous comments. Hundreds of hours have gone into writing and producing the video to show how easy it can be to replace garage door torsion springs. But, it's also dangerous. And we discourage people from trying this if they don't feel confident they can do the job safely. You're welcome. Best wishes!

I am pretty handy and I have owned my own homes for the past 25 years. I can probably count the amount of people that I have hired on one hand. I have done many remodels and basic maintenance involving Electrical, Carpentry, and Plumbing but I had never had to install torsion springs. This was one of those thing that I thought I may have to hand over to a pro. I want to thank you for your video because it was very detailed and I was excited to start. I knew after this video that I understood the basics which will probably help me to maintain my garage door better from now on too. I ran into one problem caused by the original install. The shaft was not slipping through the bearing making it impossible to remove the cable drums. It seemed that the original installer turned the set screw a little too much which took the shaft out of round. To avoid damaging the bearing, and now knowing the basics, I removed the bearing retainers (one at a time), and took them off of each end, which allowed me to clean and lube them effectively. With your detail, the step by step instructions, me being really careful, as well as the added labor due to the damaged shaft, I still installed the springs successfully in a little under an hour.

Bryan, it sounds like you're quite handy. Doing the work in less than an hour, even with the problem you had, is impressive. You're welcome, and thank you for your helpful comments. When we were producing the video I was aware of dozens of exceptions to the normal procedure. We could have easily produced 10 videos to cover the variations. Hopefully others will be able to learn from the steps you followed to work around damage from an improper installation. I've seen many of these over the years.

I was ready to buy what I thought I needed but one of the reviews (while positive) advised to make certain by searching using specific words and come upon an informative website (DDM Garage Doors). After watching how to determine which springs I needed, I felt you deserved my money, not the other vendor. I took my laptop to the garage and followed the step by step instructions on this video, pausing and reviewing as necessary. Thank you so much for being so thorough and for sharing your knowledge freely. For those that are still shopping for parts: If you find this video useful, please be fair and buy from them.

My spring broke last week. This was the best video I found. I watched it a few times, while waiting for the parts to arrive. When changing the springs I found it easier to watch the step, do it exactly as he said, then repeat with the next step. It's easy to skip an important detail if you just try to all w/o refering back to the video. It saved me a couple hundred bucks! THANKS!!!

Hi Nick! We're glad we were able to help out. Many people have said the same; that they find it best to watch one step, do it, and then continue on with the process. If you miss a step, it may be a crucial part to finishing the replacement correctly! You made the right call in double checking.

There are several KZbin videos where the installer doesn't stretch the springs after winding. Experienced professionals, however, understand that without stretching the springs the doors often will not seal the floor completely after closing. The problem with winding the springs outside the winding cone is that there is no way to safely stretch the springs. You have to position your head right in the path of a winding cone when it is most stressed. That's dangerous! The only way to safely wind the spring and to stretch it afterward is the way we show on this video.

Hi Fernando! Wow, that is a lot. The price on just the springs is way too much if they are normal garage door springs. The price for the opener is within a normal range, depending on the opener used on the door. We're glad this video was able to help this replacement go well! This is a perfect of example of doing you research; some shops will try to charge more than they should. We have a list of reputable shops on our website for people who are looking for a reputable company in their area: ddmgaragedoors.com/garage-door-repairs/

I would like to personally thank you for this video. It was perfect, very detailed and helpful. It was the only video I could find that included every step needed. From the amount of turns the springs needed, to tightening the springs to the bar and everything in between. I move from Michigan where the garage doors are light to, Coastal S.C. where the doors are hurricane rated and pretty heavy and it worked perfect. Great instructional video.
@DDMGarageDoors
@DDMGarageDoors 7 жыл бұрын
Nathan, Thank you for your generous comments, and you're welcome. Glad to hear you had all the details needed to finish with perfect results. Those hurricane rated doors can be difficult to spring. Because of the extra reinforcements the doors sometimes weigh over a 100 pounds more than the standard doors. Best wishes.

The best DIY video on torsion spring install I could find. I obsessively searched and watch a couple dozen, most were OK, none were as complete as this one, and this fellow is an EXCELLENT instructor. (I used to be in the business-to-buisiness training production). I would add two things he did not emphasize in this video: one video I found mentioned replacing the bearings at the ends, this seemed like a good idea, as long as you have it off; and in my case the installer cranked the set screws down so far the shaft was deeply indented, I wish I had know that, I would have been able to replace that. I reused the shaft, the bearings seemed ok, now have 2 new springs, maybe good for another 20 years. Thanks, with your help it went smoothly.
@DDMGarageDoors
@DDMGarageDoors 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeffrey! The bearings don't necessarily need to be replaced when you replace the springs. If they are worn to the point of being able to see between the race and the bearing housing, or if they are seized up to the point of not being able to turn at all anymore, then they would need to be replaced. The shaft can usually just be filed down, and will not need to be replaced either. It's always up to the customer if they want brand new parts on their door with their brand new springs: this does make some sense, and it's absolutely up to preference as long as the old parts still function and do their jobs properly.

Dan: This is one of the most well-done, step-by-step videos I've seen. You didn't go into ridiculous detail when it wasn't necessary, and you slowed down enough to get important points across when it was. The video very clearly showed every detail needed for the viewer to get complete understanding of your narrative. Your spoke clearly and intelligently, at a pace appropriate for the material. No wasted moments here, not annoying music or flashy effects, just the information a view needs to do the job at hand. Thanks for such a great video! +czissman1 Thank you for taking the time to post your generous words. My videographer, Mike Herbert, was great at capturing and highlighting important points, as well as regulating the speed of the production. The biggest challenge in scripting the video was in distilling text from the larger written 2005 tutorial and shortening it to fit the video time frame. It was also a challenge to match text, voice and video. This part must have taken 20-30 hours.

I just wanted to say thanks to Dan at DDM. I watched the video a couple of times before buying new springs from DDM and I still managed to get the springs on the wrong side. Luckily I took photos of the installation and Dan was able to identify my problem to get me back on track. I was under the impression the spring would just unscrew if backwards, but that isn’t the case. Thanks again to DDM for the great video.
@DDMGarageDoors
@DDMGarageDoors 9 жыл бұрын
Stuckneutral The way the springs stay on the cones when they are wound is counter intuitive. When you wind the spring it looks like the winding cone will spin out of the spring. What actually happens, however, is that as you wind the spring, the inside diameter of the spring decreases causing the wire to grip the cone more tightly. When I was a kid we played with Chinese handcuffs. Trying to pull your fingers out of the cuffs caused the cuffs to tighten even more tightly on you fingers. The cones in torsion springs work the same way.

Hi Jack! We're glad that you were able to accomplish this task safely! That's the key to it all; safety. My garage door torsion springs needed to be replaced. They no longer provided adequate force to allow the garage door to open and close. (The door had a lot of weight when lifting it up) Rather than tightening the existing (old) torsion springs I purchase new ones as well as the torsion spring bars. I asked about 12 people from work if they have every replaced their torsion springs. All of them sad “No, this is very dangerous and you should have a professional do it”. I was very apprehensive about doing this myself due to the dangers involved. This afternoon my wife and I replaced our garage door torsion springs. We followed your video and had no problems at all. Thank You so much!

We're glad this video helped, Jeffrey! Your coworkers aren't wrong though: this is a dangerous task if safety precautions are not taken. Also, if you ever add weight to your door through reinforcements, insulation, or something else, you cannot just tighten up the old springs. The weight of your door has changed, so you will need new springs that will properly lift that weight.

Can't thank the folks at ddmgaragedoors.com enough for all the help this past week with all the questions I had before replacing my own springs. Yes, doing this can be extremely dangerous if you're not careful. But all of the people online acting like you're going to die if you even attempt this are ridiculous. Just use common sense and follow these instructions word for word and you will find that this is a lot easier than what you probably thought. Thanks again guys, this video saved me $250 or more!

These videos have taught me a lot. Even being mechanically inclined, garage door springs were still intimidating enough to where this feat wouldn't be possible without these videos. I didn't realize, the doors on my house were never balanced right. The door never stayed in place half way up. My thinking is that because of the addition bracing required in S. Florida for strength, perhaps they were balanced before the added weight. Regardless, your videos, the right tools and a 1/2 turn later on both springs, my garage door opens perfectly. Your attention to safety is top notch and is something that cannot be overlooked when working with these doors. Kudos!

Great concise video with the replacement going exactly as shown , just modified two items. Painted the stripe while on the ground so I wouldn't be spraying the finished drywall, scoring a chalk line also works. After 35 yrs, the light rust made sliding the rod difficult and required me to take off the bearing plates at each end to get the pulley & subsequently the springs off. Took the opportunity to scotch bright the rod ends, while minding any of the markings for the pulleys. Also used your video for weighing a garage door, as I felt the old springs were undersized from the installer eons ago & they were. From door weight spring calc apps out there, was able to properly up-size the replacement springs. Thanks for all the posted info.

Hi a non! We're glad to hear that this video was helpful to you! We hope that you are able to get your door to lower to the floor. @@DDMGarageDoors Thanks DDM for explaining exactly why this step exists (stretching spring after winding, see 13:20), and ANON for the question. That was my biggest question so far, as I've seen most others with videos omit this step, or even comment on why it is unnecessary or dangerous. What's the worst that could happen if a person does not do this step?
@DDMGarageDoors
@DDMGarageDoors 4 жыл бұрын
@@vanontom Hi Thomas! That's a good question to wonder. For one, if you do not stretch the springs out, the door may have a difficult time closing all the way, and you may have a gap on the bottom. This is because the shaft moves slightly as the door operates, but enough that if you don't stretch the springs, the coils will likely bind on each other, and cause the door to not be able to close all the way.

I give to DDM Garage Doors 5/5 stars. Very good information on this video and very good customer service. I completed replacing the broken one-torsion-spring system into two-torsion-spring system on my garage that is 7'x16' for the first time last night within an hour. It was actually much easier than expected and straight forward thanks to this video. Saved me a bunch of $ on doing this myself. Changing car tires is much more work than this so if you can change tires, you should be able to do this. I also did order my replacement springs from DDM Garage Door...I provided them the garage weight, garage dimension (7x16), rail radius, and the cable drum number...they figured out for me what spring I should use. I initially paid for a different spring since I gave them the wrong cable drum number but when they reviewed my details it turns out that I needed a different set of spring which are more expensive. So that I didn't have to pay more, they gave me the priority shipping for discounted amount on 2 separate boxes.
