Honestly, the way they framed the musical as Porter looking back on his life would work best as a stage musical. It would feel more intimate.

Another movie musical that ended up working better on stage: The Newsies! Although that had more to do with the performances, rather than the actual framing of the story. Also speaking of 4:20, that'd be ANOTHER juke-box musical movie told in flashback (albeit one that was not over as long of a course of time, and not told at the end of the main character's life). Still, it managed to work better. Even though Kevin Kline still delivers in this as he always does, I'm just glad that he has a plethora of other roles (including musical ones) to do the rest of his career justice. I am very much looking forward to the Enchanted Christmas review.

Kevin Kline can actually sing well, and his deconstruction of that because Cole Porter couldn't sing is a terrible, terrible choice in a film musical. The worst thing in the show for me was the "Begin the Beguine" number. A beguine is a dance with a very specific rhythm, and that's the way Cole Porter wrote the song. The version in this film completely eradicates that rhythm.

3:55 honestly it’s easier to name musicals WITH happy endings. Off the top of my head there’s: Sound of Music Hello Dolly! Hairspray Heathers Waitress (honestly most film musicals follow this trend) Into the Woods (kinda) Little Shop of Horrors (assuming it’s the theatrical ending) The Music Man Singin’ in the Rain Mamma Mia! (unfortunately) Spamalot (maybe?) Avenue Q I know there’s more but tragedy is just better for drama. Oh, and Wicked too. Love that ending.

Ok. So your contention is that this line is bad. But the evidence that you use to counter the statement doesn't hold any water, as it's reading the line as though it were taking place now. It only serves to undercut your argument. I'd be more inclined to believe that we as an audience are meant to hear that line with our modern knowledge and in an ironic mode be amused because unlike the poor schlub saying the line, we have knowledge of modern musicals. So the line is still bad, but bad because it panders to us feeling superior to people from the thirties for having knowledge that they could not have possibly had.

@HerrWozzeck7 жыл бұрын
Sin #8: THANK YOU! As someone who's played pit orchestra in Kiss Me Kate, that annoys the crap out of me too. My best guess for why they did it that way is that whoever wrote the script saw the way they worked "So In Love" into the 1953 film (where, while it is still sung in an off-stage context, is sung as a duet) and then forgot to check the actual stage show to see if it was that way on stage. I can kind of see it, but holy Christ is it annoying. Seeing this video kind of makes me wish you'd instead taken a look at "Til the Clouds Roll By", which is basically this movie but for Jerome Kern. That really kinda makes it worse in a lot of ways when you consider that Jerome Kern's life was pretty milquetoast when compared to Cole Porter, which means they wound up fictionalizing pretty much the entire thing. You might have a lot to say about the way it starts and ends, too: it starts with what can best be described as the SparkNotes version of Show Boat, and then ends with a ludicrous 7-minute medley of Jerome Kern tunes that only serves to give more screentime to three of the earlier guest stars and then also throw Frank Sinatra into the mix for no reason. And then there's the fact that it pretty much only deals in production numbers for a lot of its sequences, because what else is an MGM musical gonna do in 1946? It's otherwise got pretty much all the same problems De-Lovely has (useless framing device, overabundance of guest stars, lack of tension in the unfocused story, etc.). But for what it's worth, I still enjoyed this one. And hey, bad biopic musicals are always fun for the riffing, right?

Interesting how the elements that didn't work in De-Lovely worked so well in All That Jazz: flashbacks, the framing device of a conversation with death, the musical numbers. Of course, All That Jazz was not the least bit afraid to show the protagonist as a highly flawed and not entirely likeable man who left a trail of hurt and wrecked lives in his wake, nor to show the ugly, cynical, and petty side of show business. All the more interesting too given that Bob Fosse was essentially directing a his own biopic.

I know that So In Love is a solo song in the original stage show, but it was made a duet in the movie version (where Lili even said that the song is a duet), and a lot of covers of the song since the movie have also been duets...and I'm pretty sure a local version I've seen also made it a duet. So your critique for that sin isn't entirely deserved, IMO. We can also add Miss Saigon to the list of musicals without happy endings. I do think Les Miserables was actually happier than you give it credit for being. Yeah, everyone died, but the show (and movie) ended with the strong implication that they all went to heaven and spent eternity together.

She didn’t cover that version, but she has covered the 1986 TV version with Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves.

Diva, I enjoy your videos, but for the first time, I disagree with you. I've seen this movie only once when it first came out. I didn't love it, but I liked it. You are probably right about the poor plot development, but what about the Saving Graces of the lovely production values, the performances, and the songs? Also, most, if not all, of the tragic endings you cited were written after Cole Porter's time. Now you know more about Porter's life than I do, so you're probably right that the plot shortchanged Cole and Linda's relationship. Maybe I'll check out that movie again and get back to you. In spite of some of my comments, I still enjoyed your review.

Hi, Diva! It's November 28 and you haven't done your Know the Score yet. Is everything all right? Was Thanksgiving overwhelming? Take your time; it's just that I look forward to your stuff. Have a great day!

Everything is fine! I took some much-needed vacation this month so Know the Score went on a short break. Look for it in December!

Respectfully disagree. I completely enjoyed the film and disagree with some of your major criticisms. Examples (1) Porter’s sexuality isn’t swept under the rug… it is a major part of the film (2) I enjoy the musical performances (what you call the “guest stars”) and would much rather have that that what a lot of modern musical films do by using actors who can’t pull off the singing. Etc etc.
