Hey y’all, I’m an inpatient OT and new mama. I developed the condition during pregnancy and it significantly worsened after birth. Just an FYI it’s also called “mommy thumb” and is commonly found in parents, moms, from ergonomics as you mentioned. My approach knowing this now, is education on prevention for parents and modified activities for childcare emphasizing proper ergonomics and prevention strategies, pain management. For current de quervains is using the wrist splint at all times, pain management and activity modifications. I opted out of oral anti inflammatory because I wanted localized pain control so I had corticosteroid shots under the sheath (my wrists were so bad I could even stretch or pick up a pen). First didn’t work for me, second shot helped (slightly) 6 weeks later by ortho. Still having pain so the next plan of care is surgery. However, not practical at this time because I need to work and they require minimum 8 weeks PER HAND (only one hand can be operated at a time). So fun! Also, I would strengthen upper body muscles ( focus on shoulders & back) and not recommend strengthening hand or muscles for a while unless there’s no inflammation or pain because it’ll reaggrevate. Isometric excercises only if pain has subsided significantly. This is my experience and how I chose to approach my plan of care. I don’t specialize in hands, so these are based off of speaking to other OTs, some do specialize in hands, along with my orthopedic doctor. Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to learning more! Going to check out your taping video next! :)

Great job. Great name. Spot on explanation, description and advice; a visual component beyond just talking would be helpful and keep one's attention. Great name. You guys are very intelligent, be alive.

Whenever it’s going to rain, I feel almost-unbearable pain in both my wrists. It’s not constant, as there’s no issue with range of motion or anything when it’s not “inflamed.” When it is, though, I feel like someone is sticking a white-hot knife into the base of both of my thumbs. I think I finally figured out this is what it is. It’s gotta be. BTW 800 mg of ibuprofen doesn’t touch it and the only think that helps is when I take the opposite hand and press hard on the spot with a finger.

Oh man. Have you tried an over the counter brace to give it rest when this happens?

@@TheUpperHand I haven’t. Is there a specific type or brand you would recommend?
@TheUpperHand
@TheUpperHand 3 жыл бұрын
@@chris77jay77 yes something similar to this one in this link (amzn.to/2LQSb13). It needs to immobilize the thumb and the wrist. From where you describe your pain it could be CMC arthritis also which this brace would also help with that if that happens to be it also.

I have a in home day care and I pick up on the kids all the time if I was to have the surgery for the depressions how long would I have to be out of work

Check with the surgeon to confirm their timeline but it really just depends. Some people do really well with the surgery and others it takes longer. My guess is that you would be good to go by 4-6 weeks but again don’t hold me to that.

Is de quervain's tenosynovitis common among young adults?
@TheUpperHand
@TheUpperHand 2 жыл бұрын
Most common in women between the ages of 30 and 50. Especially young mothers who have to pick up there children a lot. However, it can certainly affect anyone at any age!

@@TheUpperHand so how about in men is it normal, liks if you work in hard labor like in heavy lifting or construction and how to really know if it's de quervain's tenosynovitis or something else?
@TheUpperHand
@TheUpperHand 2 жыл бұрын
@@markaguilar1215 I have certainly seen men with it too but definitely more women than men. It can affect both. The WHAT test and Finklestein's test are usually two good provocative tests to perform. Maybe see a local hand surgeon and see if they can diagnose it for you to be sure.
