Now that I've seen most of the videos you've watched about the Netherlands, I can only conclude one thing. If you come here you should try to stay for a year, because you want to see so much, you can't do that in a few weeks :-)

I've always wondered what the NL would seem like to someone from a country as big as the US. In theory, you could visit all of the NL in two weeks but the historical content is so dense that you wouldn't learn anything in two weeks. How would a huge country with hardly any history (no offense) compare to a tiny country with dense history?

@@theGoogol Nature compensates a lot! I visited the USA five times for four to eight weeks and never got bored for a second. And apart from nature, cities have different character, with other people and cultures.

There is also an "avondvierdaagse" (evening four day walk). All primary schools participate and children walk (voluntarily) for two hours in the evening for four days. At the end, their parents welcome them with flowers and sweets at the finish line. It is held all over the country.

Most important thing about “de vierdaagse” is the Nijmeegse zomerfeesten (summer festival a week long party!) people all over the world come and party, and a bit of walking to. The most fun in the Netherlands to enjoy once in your life, and when it goes dark outside the real party gets started.

My mom finished the Vierdaagse 11 times despite weak ankles, before having to quit due to problems with her knees. My dad died 6 weeks before he was going to participate for the 15th time. He finished 10 times after suffering a heart attack and 8 times after having half of one lung removed. Incredibly proud of both of them.

Its amazing! Every year I give up one week of my summer holiday to work at Camp Heumensoord, where all the military live for a week. I work the night-shift from 1 am till 9.30 am to serve them breakfast before they start their march of the day. Hopefully the Walk of the World will return in 2022!

Been there 19 times... But I love the atmosphere, the positive feeling, doesn't matter who you are or where you come from. People from 70 countries from all around the world going for that single goal. And if you can't make it walking for four days, the whole city Nijmegen is one big party... Highly Combustible I do recommend this, you are the right type of guy to experience this, with or without the walk... I'm also a former military and everyone should have been there once, a week to remember.

I’ve done this once. It was wonderful. I had to walk 50k’s to get the medal so I did just that. Which indeed meant an early start every morning. Nevertheless people - in the thousands - were lined up along the route to cheer the participants on that early in the morning. All along the route they’d play music, either in a dj style fashion or whole bands playing live. No need to bring food or drink if you’re participating: plenty on offer from the locals who live along the route. The whole vibe is one of cheerfulness and festivity. It’s really a great experience.

What is not mentioned in the video that during this week there are many festivities. The center of Nijmegen is jam-packed. There is live music everywhere, there are festivities for children, there are some podia used by professional artists. A lot of different nationalities having a big party together. Also: All these walkers need a bed to sleep at night and not to far from the start of the walk. There are not enough hotelbeds etc. What happens is that many people volunteer beds in their home. They provide a room to stay with a good bed. They provide breakfast and depending on the arrangement also lunch package and dinner. Sometimes they will give them a ride to the start. They will get some money for their expenses but not more than that. Some people come back every year at the same adress. Some long lasting friendships got started this way. The last day is very special. Musical bands will join in during the last 5 kilometers. There is a field at 5 km before the finish. Many people wait their for their friends and when complete they start the last 5 km. The whole 5 km, there is one big crowd cheering on the walkers. People give flowers, preferably gladiolen. And again music everywhere. Police-officers have to regulate traffic and crowd, but there are almost never problems. And when possible the police officers join in with hossen ( kind of dancing), cheering etc.

I used to live next to the Wedren (start&finish). Sometimes the early starters sing "You'll never walk alone" at 4 in the morning. First you think: what is that? And then more and more ppl join in until the whole crowd is singing. Great way to wake up. I always chose the early shift that week and it always took a little bit longer to go to work. But never mind...it's De Vierdaagse.

Back in 1986 I was cutting and patching up the blisters of our fellow military brothers and sisters who did the 40 km or 50 km walks with loaded backpack. We often went to our American colleagues to get some of their novel patching material like second skin gel. They came fully equipped, ready for battle so to speak. They also brought an actual huge shower tent that we could use while the walkers were on route. In the evening after dinner we would exchange small military items, such as badges, lighters, and even berets. They just loved black berets.

They cover it on the 8 o'clock news here every year. Couple of years ago they had coverage of two spot checks that found soldiers in some military delegations who had cheated on the weight of their pack and got disqualified. In one case it was hilarious: the guy's sergeant was standing there. He wasn't saying anything, but the expression on his face was sort of like "someone is going to be cleaning latrines... for the rest of his LIFE".

We also have the De Strandzesdaagse. This 140 kilometer tour is organized every year in the last week of July. Realize that this means walking through and over the sandy beaches of the Netherlands. If you can complete this, you can walk the Nijmegen vierdaagse . We have also De avond 4 daagse: De avond 4 daagse is an annual walking event in the Netherlands and Suriname where you can walk for four days. You can walk 5, 10 and 15 kilometers in an evening. Many groups do this, such as schools and associations. But this is also done outside a group setting.

De Vierdaagse is what Nijmegen is most famous for. There are four days of walking, but seven days of partying (always with the Snollebollekes one night). There is a tradition that when you leave the danceclub drunk at 4 or 5 am, you go to the start and cheer the walkers. I did that when I was younger 😉

Nice! My dad participated on the 50k route for around 35/38 times (i lost count) ... I was the support crew from the moment I could crawl.... Good memories The 4day marches originally started as a military training march, military personnel has to walk 40k in full pack carrying a minimum of 10kg... Don't know if they still have to.. They opened it up to the public at some point and it's been a staple ever since Iirc max of 40.000 walkers.. it's amazing

I have been participating in this Nijmegen 4-day event since 2006 and I have completed it 9 times! This year 2024 I will be running it for the 10th time! That is my aim. Unfortunately I had to give up a few times. But it's such a cool event! It really brings people together and especially on the final day, everyone helps each other to get in on time! The army from different countries are participating, and the police from different countries are participating and many more from emergency services from different countries. And everyone is going for the same goal and that is the finish line on Friday! I can't really explain what you feel when you have walked another day and you are encouraged by so many spectators. There's enough to watch on KZbin to get an idea! Every walking day is special, but on Friday you feel a kind of tension and adrenaline in everyone before we can start! The feeling that we are all going to get this job done

Yeah it's great, it's the toughest one and sometimes it's too hot lately and they have to adjust the hours so they don't accidentally kill anyone. My cousins did it and one of them was crying at every step in the end and needed lots of encouragement because she had such blisters. The military has to do it at a certain speed and while packing a heavy backpack of a certain weight. I know foreign military are also very eager to join in but they draw lots or something as to who can go as there is only so much room. What regular people have in their towns is the "evening four days" where you walk a far shorter route in your own town and loads of families with small kids do that one. Just having an evening stroll for most. It's very dutch I think, that sense of community in an organised way.

I live in Nijmegen and it's a big thing here. A lot of people plan their holiday around the Vierdaagse.A friend of mine participated a few times, started alone but finished with new friends People who don't participate, party every night. The festivities start 2 days before the actual walk starts, and ends on the last day of the walk. So almost a week of partying. Some participants join the party if their feet aren't to sore, but mostly just on Saturday and on Sunday they have to go to sleep early because the first walkers start at 4 a.m.

Even though I live in Nijmegen I never walked the vierdaagse, only did the evening vierdaagse...yes the walking one with my son...but even more the celebrating one :-) because from the Saturday before the March till on friday, the last day of the march on we also have the zomerfeesten ( summer cellibrations). One week of bands and parties in the center of town on the street from late morning till late at night/early morning. Every corner you turn there is a new band, new party and all for free on the street. Saw so many of the artist from the best singers live on stages here in the center. At 4 am the first people start their march and we used to go and wish them a good walk. Some walk so terrible you wonder if they will even manage to reach the end of the street. A lot of respect for them but also sometimes calling some a little crazy. I really miss it....hope corona will be under control next year so we can have our celebrations back next year.

I did walk this 4-day march once, when I was conscripted in the Dutch Army. I was stationed in Germany and we went once in 5 weeks home for a weekend. Military Sports Events were on Friday and the first bus back to the barracks in Germany was on Tuesday. A sports event meant a long weekend at home :) So I participated in two military championships cross country running and in this 4-days march in Nijmegen. Around Nijmegen we had to walk 4 x 40km with personal weapon (I had an Uzi) and 10kg in the backpack.

My girlfriend lives in a nursing home on the street leading to Heumensoord, the temporary barracks for all participating military personnel. Three days long they arrange seating for the inhabitants of the nursing home to cheer on those military participants. It isn't actually part of the course as the finish is about three miles away, but many decide to walk the last part back to barracks anyway even though free transport back is made available. Some walk in loose groups, others still march in a column. German troops often halt their column in front of the nursing home, do a right face and sing a couple of German marching songs which can be slightly "naughty" if you can understand the language (one particularly song about a beautiful girl living in the woods who's pretty generous with her affection seems to be quite popular). It probably helps that they are allowed to place a refrigerator in the lounge of the nursing home filed with bottles of beer for the troops. Other columns simply march past, sometimes singing. Many are allowed to return to the camp individually after finishing. Quite a few are struggling to make the camp and have to be helped by their mates, sometimes by fellow soldiers from other countries. On the last day the soldiers won't be returning to the camp but will enter their transport back home near the finish line. On that day my girlfriend and I will go to the "Via Gladiola" (in daily life known as the St. Anna street) to watch participants walk the final stretch. On a nearby field (many) military groups will change into their unit's (parade) uniform to finish looking their best often accompanied by a marching band in front of them (some local, some the companies own band). It always are days we look forward to.

How the f did you end up in the Netherlands??! That’s my main question? Hey there, just passing by on yr channel (been here before for Nightwish 😉) As a Dutchie its awesome that you watched de Vierdaagse! We’re very proud of that event. It’s so much fun and a crazy good atmosphere I can tell you from my own experience. Great you enjoyed it👍🏻🤘🏼☀️

I signed up with my sister 3 years ago, but whilst training I injured my knee, that was in May, and in June I was still going to physical therapy and not at all able to walk 5 km let alone 4x40 and we had a schedule to follow that we were far behind on So we had to forfeit 😢 I was really sad. And then came covid. Maybe some day but I'm afraid my knees won't let me. I just stick to walks of max 20 km now 🙂

When the US had a strong military presence in Europe, there was always a large contingent of US military participating, mostly from units stationed in Germany and the Netherlands. They always were very popular.

I've been there visiting some friends in a vet UNIFIL unit... It definitely used to be 😅 After 9/11 paranoia struck and they closed it down to outside visitors, even on invitation.. they may have loosened it up again since the US isn't participating as much anymore.
