Just out of curiosity what was the position of the decibel meter and what type of meter were you using? Your decibel numbers seemed much lower than what the manufacturer lists and that can occasionally happen if you use a phone or lower end decibel meter as it doesn’t catch the spikes. Thank you for the information and the good content.

@2A Cops - Supporting Gun Rights @Fat Panda LLC Cool review and perspective! I'm Todd Magee from Dead Air. Much to my surprise, I'm actually the designer of these cans. I actually like how you did a meter comparison from a bit of a distance. It's relative to this test and can't be compared to others, but it jives really well. On the PWS MK111 vs. MK18 comparison, the distant meter won't pick up the port noise that MK18 delivers. With the meter near the shooters ear, you'd find it's almost twice as loud (like up to 10 dB!) as the MK111. Ironically, the muzzle sound of that MK111 can be higher, because less energy was sent back out the ejection port like on the MK18. It's usually only a couple dB, though. But hey, science. I've also found that having wall close to you like this does indeed increase the sound "dose" to the shooter's ear. It's often significant even if a meter won't pick it up. The meter is designed to pick up the tallest energy spike there is to get that peak dB number. Yet, having a wall next to you will throw back a lot of energy that is just under that peak so the meter will usually ignore it. It's kind of an "area under the curve" thing, but it'll sound like an extra 5-10 dB. Remember, that 10 dB is twice is loud and can really hurt your ears. On an unsuppressed side note, when shooting with a good blast diverter (our Dead Air Pyro with the blast jacket installed) it cut the sound exposure to the shooter's ear (and that giant concussion) in a tight indoor environment by a full 10 dB. Obviously, you'd still need earpro, but it made it more like what it feels like shooting out in the open and minimized that giant concussion to the shooter. Oh, and I LOVE that MK111. I've put many thousands of extreme hard-use rounds through mine and it keeps on trucking and remains the best AR suppressor host in my opinion. Plus PWS are good people. Thanks again!

For the Sandman L I think that would be a great can for just sitting in one spot out pig or deer hunting on a bolt gun. I agree with you that it would be way too long for a CQB role

For the bolt gun Sandman L is still too heavy. You can get the same or better suppression for a lot lighter or even shorter. Something like Nomad LT would be a much better can for that.

I'm confused about the complaining about the L length being too long. K is 5.4" on a 12" barrel is around 16.9" total ( subtracting around 1/2" for barrel threads.) S is 6.8" on a 10.3" barrel is around 16.55" L is 9" on a 8" barrel is around 17" They said they tried it on a 7.5" but didnt like it. I wonder why after all this work you didnt include the 7.5" in this test. On a 7.5" barrel the L the same length as a 10.3 with an S. Im going 8.5" barrel and L.

The Sandman series is modular but is a base .30 cal can. I was wondering what people's thoughts were on the difference between the Sandman K vs the Sandman S on something like a 16 to 18 inch AR-10 in .308 Win. I don't think a battle rifle should ever be anyone's first pick for room clearing and CQB. So I was wondering if the added length and weight of the S vs the K would be worth it for situations where you wanted to stay light and handy enough to run and gun with it, but weren't setting it up to gunfight in an elevator. Say like a DMR where you would be using it in a squad mostly armed with 5.56mm carbines; so you'd need it to be capable of rolling with your squad and covering a sector, but wouldn't be the first one in the stack to get through a doorway.

Great content. Quick question, though - what gas setting were you running the MK111 on? Did you change it between cans, or run the same setting on all 3?
@jacobmeyer12703 жыл бұрын
hey man, i know this is a late reply (and you didnt ask me) but on my mk111 mod 2 the sandman k has to be ran with the gas all the way open, even with the 5.56 flash hider endcap. The sandman s can work on position 2 but not on three. You really need a tightbored 5.56 dedicated can to make position 3 necessary, although your buffer and spring setup can also make a difference on what setting may be appropriate
@hochhaul2 жыл бұрын
The L seems like what they originally meant to target and the S/K are big compromises in sound reduction for the sake in length. If the weight and length are too much but you still want that decibel reduction, the Nomad line is the way to go.

Great video. You guys should do a 308 bolt action test with all three suppressors. My sandman k is my fav for 5.56 guns, less blow back and still gets the job done of taking the blast and edge off when compared to my sandman s. I use my sandman s for 30 cal guns only. That sandman L didn't have any muzzle flash/

I'm torn between the RC2 and the Sandman S. Been trying to decide for months and i'm about to just buy both because I can't pick. I love that the RC2 is a proper 5.56 can and it's great for flash reduction, but the mounting system worries me, I feel like the first time it gets stuck i'm just going to leave it permanently attached and never remove it again. The sandman S has the superior mount by a long shot but it's a bit longer and its a 30cal can which isn't exactly what I need. The sandman K looks fantastic and I love the size, but with the flash signature still being ridiculous (especially if you're doing any low light or NV shooting) and the DB reduction not being all that great, I almost feel like a blast forwarding device would be money better spent than buying a K. Putting one on a 5.56 seems like an absolute waste. Subsonic 300bo is its place.
@jonathonanderson23172 жыл бұрын
For what its worth, the surefire can can't get stuck. All you have to do is unlock the collar and fire a round through it and it will break any carbon lock and remove it self from the muzzle device.

Im torn between the k and s I was thinking buying the sandman s because I will use for bolt rifle 6.5 creedmore 16 in ar15 an 16 in Ak47 and my close quarters would be a 7.5 inch ar15. Do you think the s would be good for the 7.5? I’m just worried the k would not suppress the 6.5 creed as well.

The sandman comes with dead airs qd mounting system installed. (Welded in I think) plus a muzzle brake , but it will be in 5/8x24. You will need 1/2x28 for most ar-15’s. For my Purposes of self defense/life/Liberty rifle my preferred suppressor length strictly for signature reduction purposes is either a 12.5”-14.5” 5.56(in an ideal world a 13.9” 6.5Grendel would do nicely.)(All D.I. Applications). IF I had an unlimited supply of ammo I’d run the 6.5Grendel all day long, given @300 yards a 123gr pill has around 1,000 FTLBS of Energy(which is ball park what the 12.5”-14.5” 5.56 has energy wise@ the muzzle) & @750 yards the 6.5G has around 500FTLBS of energy using a 123gr ELD pill. However, practically speaking for compatibility with those around me should I run dry and need to bum a magazine from a “fellow gun enthusiast”, having the significantly weaker 5.56 round(especially when talking at distances out to 500 yards using a 12.5”-14.5” 5.56) I’m giving up quite a bit of energy on target BUT if I’m the only one in my group running the short 6.5 Grendel & I run dry, I could “crap” in one hand & “wish” in the other& see which hand fills up first…..
