DEAD BY DAYLIGHT AND LGBTQIA2S+ REPRESENTATION: WHY IS SABLE WARD AT THE CENTER OF ATTENTION?

Sable Ward is the new survivor of Dead by Daylight and people are already looking into her as possible trans and/or lesbian representation. Why is the topic taking the center of the discussions in the community and what's the story of LGBTQIA2S+ Representation in DbD?

Why would developers make Sable a trans person? It's your right to associate yourself with a character, but coming up with a story for him and forcing developers to do it just because you want is a cringe. I'm not talking about the video in which you impose your point of view on others and say that she has to be a trans person literally crying

I think even if she was which given the evidence is somewhat unlikely what does it matter survivors at the end of the day are just skins for the same thing once you have all the perks unlocked for everyone to use. So even if true what does it truly matter if she can still be hit like the rest be killed like the rest and still be hurt like the rest? Now if DBD was a story based game that would be different since she could flesh herself out more as a individual but from a purely gameplay perspective not including visuals and audio additions what inherently makes Sable any different to Steve Harrington or Claudette from a purely gameplay and performance perspective if you already have all perks unlocked?

So after reading her entire lore line by line, i hate to say it but Sable being Lesbian or Trans has nothing to do with her lore. Her lore shows her as being more of a Tomboy who loves Horror, Mikaela is depicted much more as a Best Friend or Sister to Sable not as a love interest. Honestly i think BHVR should just leave it up to head cannons because as of right now nothing bout Sable screams she's LGBTQ+ least not in her lore. While i agree representation is nice we need to stop acting like it's a MUST HAVE thing and projecting it onto every new character. I view sable as what she truly is, DBD finally getting a Goth representation archetype, if they in the future with a tome show she's actually LGBTQ+ then hell ya, but if not that's perfectly ok too.

I agree with the last part, but my main point is that we need at least an update about this topic, more clear communication, because the last time was 2 years ago and the community kinda expect the representation happening sooner or later after so much waiting, so they wonder if the new character is the "chosen one".

Oh, but I agree. The problem is how the community reacted because of how silent is BHVR about the representation topic, so the first thing that barely looks like possible representation hypes the community.

Whatever Sable ends up being I will at least be happy to have a goth person in the game she may not fully represent me but I can appreciate that she represents the side of me that likes spooky stuff and thinks black is the best color

I would say that when DBD made David gay, I feared they crossed the LGBTQ representation off their list. And Susie is lesbian now so that's cool I guess but kinda flew under the radar. DBD is a game with a lot of representation but is lacking on LGBTQ characters and they haven't taken many steps to correct that. With Sable and Mikaela, they had a perfect opportunity to introduce two LGBTQ characters in a very organic way but kinda dropped the ball on two characters who appear very queer but whose lores are completely absent of queerness. Representation matters, but not when the community has to beg for it. They should be gaying up their game on their own and it has been a disappointment to see them not quite commit to it.

While I can see a lot of the points made here are good and I would never say no to more representation. (Heck Sable herself represents the goth subculture which we didn’t have before) i still don’t think it’s the developers jobs to turn a character that may or may not be Lgbtq+ into a character that is just because of fan requests while it’s important of course to represent people everyone is going to be a tad bit different and their are hundreds if not thousands of gender identities at this point us expecting that every subsection of a couple fasciitis of a identity would be represented is a little silly plus clearly the developers already see people like us (myself included as part of the Lgbtq+ community) as valid and as a person who is part of this and is also goth as hell myself I am excited for Sable even if she ends up being the most straight cisgender girl ever because hey she’s goth I am goth she is kinda like me in a way already and that subsection of her character that is already her identity is enough for me personally now if she ends up having a thing with Another female survivor or who knows maybe even killer as unlikely as it may seem then fantastic as a goth little girly gay bean I would be stoked to see it but I feel like she can still be interesting without being pidgined into a role she may not fit and I don’t mean any hate I say this as a member of the community myself representation is always good but if it’s forced through mob backlash then it’s not really genuine representation because it’s being done to stop backlash or fill a quota of some sort. I believe as hard as it is sometimes and as hopeless as it can seem it is somewhat our part to play as fans to support whatever creative aspects of content that may be released so that way if we do get someone that is trans or non binary or something else it’s actually because the character was genuinely built from the ground up to be that way not because they had to be changed due to people being upset when unconfirmed headcanon ends up not being correct genuine representation is a good thing forced representation is not if we harrass someone because they don’t put someone like us in a game then are we really much better than those that hate us because we exist. Again I would be over the moon if she ended up being a lesbian (though I genuinely think there is little to almost zero chance she is trans unless she started very young she doesn’t have the same typical type of appearance you would see from a trans woman that young as a woman she is almost to perfectly feminine in things like face structure inflection posture and presentation to be trans in my experience as someone who is experienced with both sides I can say when I do present myself femininely yes I can still be pretty but I would be gaslighting myself if I said I looked anything like someone like sable or just cis goth woman and that’s perfectly okay it’s a continuous process working towards it is something important and if it takes a few years that is okay to me but she for her age is way to perfect to be trans unless she started at s very young age which is always possible of course but I find somewhat unrealistic for like half of trans people who usually have to start during later or early adulthood because of family and social issues again if she is than fantastic but if not it still would not make me dislike her I would totally main her ether way. I honestly think we should let developers tell whatever story they want if we don’t like it that is our right and we could try to create something that fits our experiences more but to try to force our experiences and identities onto others like we are entitled to something for existing and being different is a little disingenuous and almost a little bit entitled behavior

I can agree the silence is certainly not great but behavior from all I have seen of them seems to be a pretty progressive company so I think a trans character getting in is not so much a matter of if than it is a matter of when it gets in. The radio silence is not great but if it’s because they have a idea and are trying to figure it out in a way that it feels incorporated naturally and isn’t a offense stariotype of something I can somewhat understand that. It can be hard to represent trans people as a t girl myself I can say i personally look pretty different than you not that that’s in any way a problem I just can see how for a company would have trouble coming up with how to do that right if I were a dev I would personally wanna make sure whatever I am representing is done in a way that can make everyone feel included which due to the various types of people that are trans may be something they are struggling with.

Honestly I'm at the stage of playing this game where if Sable isn't trans I might consider uninstalling and moving on to other games, I need a character that represents me and if bhvr don't want to honour what they said so long ago, giving us hope, it's not right and they need to retract the statement officially and clear the air for us the users that actually matter long term. The devs don't owe you anything. You realize the characters aren't real, right? David being gay doesn't affect his gameplay whatsoever. He doesn't have any voice lines, you don't get to explore him as a character. He's just a skin. A skin which you can equip dozens of different pride charms etc to express yourself. I use the non-binary one on everything and that's more than enough. People like you need to chill out. You give the trans community an awful image of being full of aggressive, hostile demand makers. If you don't like the game, then move on. Don't call people transphobic who weren't doing anything wrong. That word is starting to mean nothing now. And maybe don't make your entire personality centered around your gender. You'll probably feel less "attacked" that way.
