I've been having a lot of fun with Ghostbusters. Usually I'm not into the "killer" roles but I really enjoy Ghost, mostly bc I don't have to be sweaty and/or aggressive. I can just chill out, haunt stuff, and run.

Don't know if I will play the Ghostbusters game, but a more casual alternative to DBD seems like a good thing. I wish DBD and its community would embrace its casual roots and stop trying to push a competitive mindset onto the game. VHS is sorta proof that overly focusing on a competitive style of game in the ASYM genre is a bad idea and hopefully Ghostbusters (and the upcoming texas chainsaw and killer klowns game) is a success due to its (seeming) casual nature.

Stumbled onto this video after your TCM vid, and it actually makes me happy to have invested in the Ghostbusters game. Many of the issues you listed here have been worked on or addressed by the devs over multiple patches and updates, especially the matchmaking issues (there is still some weirdness, but I don't get ejected until I choose to leave matchmaking now regardless of what side I play), and their content releases are similar to Deep Rock Galactic, slow but good quality and sizable. Love your videos, can't wait to see more!

Another great video! I completely agree about the price of of GB:SU being a detractor for some people. I want the game but really want to play with friends. The price tag causes most of my gaming friends to balk and we end up playing something else we all already own. I guess I can always hope for a PC GamePass release.

I've loved watching gameplay of Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed, both sides have incredibly fun and appealing playstyles, and considering how hard that is to balance in an asymm I think that makes the game such a solid contender. I love the story element in Spirits Unleashed and I agree that it's charming, I think it gives some nice lore context to the NPC's. I absolutely loved your analysis about the UI, I never noticed how DBD had a slightly lower HUD for seeing distant action during matches! I thought that was really insightful into understanding UI. I also really enjoyed the topic of permanence, the slowly increasing change to the environment in the game as the haunting becomes more progressive is such a clever way to build immersion. I really think Ghostbusters is such a well designed game whether you're a fan of the films or simply passive to them, but It's a shame about the matchmaking and the incessant need to constantly plop you in a game with AI, even though AI is great for DC's and slower matchmaking, it doesn't have the playerbase yet to support that, and it could be SO strong with a bigger playerbase, and I think it definitely deserves it. Considering it's base price as well, I agree that paid DLC sounds like a much better way to promote the game's longevity. So in every respect I agree that it needs to be marketed towards people who play DBD! So so much potential. Fucking great video, thanks for always putting your thoughts out into the world.

reminds me of midnight ghosthunt, but it flopped big time and barely has people playing it right now.

Is it worth it? Not as much as TCM, Evil Dead or F13 but for sure better than Hide or Die, Last Year, Soul at Stake and VHS!

24:00 So what you're saying is that you feel that VHS is the Competitive Alternative to DBD while GBSL is the Casual Alternative to DBD. That seems about right. I'm a regular VHS player and one thing I have found consistently in my many games is that the game is extremely well balanced for being an ASYM. I think the main issue people have with VHS is the high skill ceiling required to play the game well. Additionally, many people don't like playing as Monster, saying it isn't fun. I have a question Hot Cross. Do you find the Monsters in VHS boring? Are DBD's early Killers objectively more fun than VHS's early Monsters? I find it fascinating that DBD has been so dominant since 2016 and it looks like no other ASYM can gain a solid foothold in the genre. As a VHS player I'd like to know why the game is faltering. I'll keep playing because i find the gameplay a blast, but it is sad that most of the other kids have packed up and left. I hope GBSL and VHS and Evil Dead and other ASYM'S all find their audience. If Evolve can find a player base 10 years after its release, maybe these other ASYM'S can too. P.S. : Nice analysis of Color Theory as always. The difference in mood elicited by different shades of Green is a good observation. The contrast between how Green is used in DBD and GBSL is an interesting demonstration of how a simple variation in hue can elicit significantly different emotions.

I wouldn't say VHS monster is boring. It's actually a lot more exciting than DbD's killer alternative. The trouble is it's so intense that casual players are put off. I can only play so much monster before my brain gets tired, whereas DbD killer, quite chill in comparison. Thanks for the kind words as well! Very much appreciated!

@@TheHotCross Interesting observation Hot Cross. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Jaee; he was very active in content creation for VHS up until recently (poor guy is having some family problems) and he would often comment on the fact that he couldn't play multiple Monster games in succession because he would simply get burned out. Jaee said it was just the sheer amount of tension, the incredible degree of focus required to play Monster at a high skill level that he found exhausting. Jaee was actually a high level Monster player, but he could only handle so many games before he needed a break. Seems like you and Jaee have the same experience with Monster. I'm actually a Monster Main and play game after game without any trouble. That said, I don't take my games too seriously, and usually don't go up against 4 Stacks because my Win Rate isn't high enough for the MMR system to match me up against the best players often. Interesting. DBD Killer is quite chill. That makes sense though. DBD Killers can't be killed. As such, Killers in DBD never feel threatened and can enjoy being an unstoppable force. Scott Jund said he didn't think VHS would succeed because it was a game where the Power Role shifts between the Killer and the Survivors. Scott felt that all such games in the ASYM genre never succeeded because people have a hard time adapting between the Power role and the Survivor role over the course of a match. What do you think? Do you agree with Scott? Thanks for the comment Hot Cross. Subscribed. : )

I also wonder if it was somewhat poor marketing. I feel like the selective process during the closed beta wasn't a great idea and it also felt like a lot of early content creators who were spotlighted by VHS were very anti DbD which may have further pushed casual players away. But it could still see a resurgence! You never know!
