Dead Cell Found In Lead Acid Battery

Fully charged lead acid battery can be verified either by:
1. a hydrometer measuring a specific gravity of roughly 2.6, or
2. a volt meter measuring a voltage corresponding to the number of cells times 2.1 to 2.2 volts.
Six cell battery == 12.7 volts
Three cell battery =6.3 volts

Thank you for following my work. This battery has a cell that is not accepting a charge, causing the other five cells to be overcharged and thus liberate hydrogen. This will, if not already has, caused damage to all the cells. The purpose of this video was to pass on this observation. In other projects, like the one opening the battery case i've noticed all the cells with consistent 1.2v, or 8.4v total; all cells essentially damaged (unfortunately this did not get into the video). Worked on reviving five other batteries just by using this solar charger and cycling their operation has been successful, but generally only for energy storage. This has lead me to make a circuit to send 14.5v spikes at 5kHz while recharging (suggested by others to break hard sulfated layers from the plates). Unfortunately, this has not yet been finished and neither have i just added some concentrated sulfuric acid (practice by some recyclers). So yes the story is not over .... Hoping to add more. @@tiredhub3270 Suspect that one cell had lost too much available PbSO4 and was just electrolyzing water (note the bubbling) during my charging attempts. The cell imbalance eventually is not good for the other cells and they too begin to fail. This battery was from an RV and probably drained a few too many times. If i ever get some conc H2SO4 i'll try using it to rejuvenate the cell.

battery was filled with distilled water. acid strength probably low. the bubbling was hydrogen being created during the charging.

@@zaneenaz4962 They say you must get a dc welder and hit her with 20 v and anywhere up to 400 amps for 15 minutes, then let it cool for an hour and repeat process up to 5 times until all chambers /cells boil, then place her on a slow charge for 24 hours. Of course if the cell is shorted you will have to remove the top of it and take out the lead plates in that cell and re insulate them with plastic or fiberglass padding before replacing it.

@@zaneenaz4962 Remember when it's boiling and venting hydrogen gas it's important not to create a spark around it so always leave the welder off until both leads are connected. Always connect the positive lead first and then the negative lead so as not to create any chance of arcing. Oh and no smoking near it.

@@irishguy200007 .... simpler to just add a little concentrated sulfuric acid. This allows more PbSO4 to form. Unfortunately don't have any right now.

In order to charge a 12 volt battery it requires around 14-15 volts most car voltage regulates read around 13.7 or so volts when they are charging right after the car is started when the battery is floating at 12.6 volts before starting this voltage drops off though as the charge is restored to the battery as long as the voltage regulator is working right. Basically the main requirement is that the voltage has to be higher that the voltage of the battery you are trying to charge to make the current flow into the battery it isn't really important what that voltage is exactly within reason so long as your not melting or over heating the battery normally the rate of charge should be around 2-10 percent of the batteries rated capacity for lead acid so a 100 AH battery charge at 10 Amps the voltage will be the variable to make that much current flow and that is controlled by the charger the battery doesn't care what voltage you charge it at but the current makes a difference too high of a current and you boil away the electrolyte and create unneeded heat in the battery.
