Welcome to the world of almost everything. It's generally, but not in this case, called the Peter principle.
@simonaspalovis12043 жыл бұрын
@@robertcolvin3182 As you said, this doesn't really apply here. The Peter principle refers to people, who are continiously promoted to the point, where they no longer have any competence or clue in their new position. Winters is not incompetent in being a high-ranking desk-job officer. He just doesn't like it very much. At least not at first, because he got used to it eventually, as the series shows.

Something I just realized, the dialogue in BoB is so natural. Aside from the dramatic speeches and monologues, it feels almost non-scripted. Really helps enhance the realization that these were real people with realistic bonds with each other and authentic reactions to real life occurrences (be it bland paperwork or shelling in your face).
@dwhip493 жыл бұрын
Agree, compare this to "Pacific" or whatever the war in the Pacific version is called. Maybe its because I was younger when I saw Band of Brothers, or maybe its because I had read the books "Pacific" is loosely based on many moons ago but Pacific just came across as melodramatic and whiny. Felt it did a disservice to both the Marines and the Helmet For My Pillow author. I never got that with "Brothers"
@mattnar38653 жыл бұрын
@@dwhip49 I love Band of Brothers but for reasons I can't even explain, The Pacific is unwatchable to me, I mean I just don't care about any of the characters, there's no bond between character and viewer like there was in Band of Brothers.
@Ken-xv4sb3 жыл бұрын
@@mattnar3865 I think a lot of is the acting, and maybe the large source of info from the men. I liked Pacific, but it doesn't hold a candle to BoB. BoB.. Winters and a large number of the men were still alive for in person interviews, follow up, etc when BoB was produced. This was not the case for Pacific as I believe most of the men had passed by the time it was produced. The acting in BoB, was also way way better. You really "got to know" the men, etc... and I think many felt a more personal connection with them because of the superb acting. David Schwimmer for example... I caught part of the Friends reunion.. and remember just having some disdain for Schwimmer. I wasn't a huge fan of Friends, but just watched it because it was on, but I just couldn't shake the feeling that Schwimmer was a douche. I realized I was probably associating him more with Sobel, who was just completely unlikable in BoB. I remember a few times seeing Frank Hughes as a guest on Law and Order, and my first thought was always, "There's the guy who played Bill Guarnere".. had no idea what the actors name was until about 10min ago when I Google'd it. That's when you know an actor really sold a character.
@OptimusWombat3 жыл бұрын
The main difference between Band of Brothers and The Pacific is the source material. BoB was based on a single book that told the story of an entire unit from it's early days in training all the way to the end of the war. Even though it featured many different individuals, their stories were always told in the context of the unit. On the other hand, there was no single "The Pacific" book to draw upon, and so there wasn't the same sense of connectedness between the stories being told. They had to use different sources and then find a way join them together into one television series.
@dwhip493 жыл бұрын
@@OptimusWombat While true, I dont buy it as an explanation. I think Ken 0201 is closer to the mark. The Acting comes across as, well, Acting. And I put that at the directors door. Band of Brothers movie was an act of love for that generation and it shows. Pacific comes across as an exercise in accounting. BoB = $ therefore Pacific =+$. Since they made author of Helmet for My Pillow a main character there was no need to piece things together. The producers failed to invest themselves in the project and it comes across as a cash grab.

It took me time to realize Nixon was in fact a great intelligence Officer. Gave the other officers a run down of the plan once Winters was able to pinpoint the exact location of the invasion with LT. Meehem using the compass. Then he was able to bring armor from Omaha to where Winters had just taken out a battery of German guns, in here he is pretty confident of the Intel on the Red Devils situation that tells Winters to ask LT.Moose when they get back about how the mission goes.. Nix was indeed a great friend and a true soldier.

The sharpness, curtness and thinly disguised sarcastic jibes of the dialogue, which would have seemed like mutual disrespect among these men in other circumstances, serves to bring out that they were about to cross into the jaws of death on the far side of the river Rhine and they all knew it. Yeah. I can remember when I was in High School Jr. ROTC and got promoted to Staff. I'd been a Platoon commander before that - working with the younger kids every day trying to teach them the ropes - then they took my Platoon Away From Me ... There was nothing to do on Staff in a High School Jr. ROTC unit. NOTHING. Absolutely ... nothing ... But - it gave the guy who came after me in commanding the Platoon - something real to do and a chance to learn something. I'd had my turn. I couldn't begrudge him that - but - I missed having something real to do. Of course - for Staff Officers in the Real Military - there is A LOT for them to do on Staff. Staff Officers are on at least the Battalion Level - below that you have Companies and Platoons - and the Headquarters for those units is pretty much the CO, XO and a few other people. With a thousand people to look after on the Battalion Level - there is all kinds of stuff that needs to be done to see that they get fed, have the equipment they need and detailed plans on what the individual parts of the Battalion are going to do. .

That's not what Nixon was saying. What he was saying was, "Of course, I'll do that, Dick, relax, and let Moose and I do our jobs." They'd been through combat together, and Winters was, by virtue of office, Nixon's superior officer (Battalion XO). They were also friends - Nixon wasn't being churlish at all, he was telling the XO to let people have some breathing room, overly close supervision is detrimental to success.

In the movie; "A Bridge Too Far", that boat operation led by none other than Bob Redford and Ryan O'Neal was portrayed as a costly, bloody and ultimately unnecessary action. All those guys rowed little canvas boats across the Rhine and got picked off by German artillery, snipers and machine guns . . just the mere fact that those stupid canvas boats didn't sink when shoved in the water is incredible enough. Half of them died, as eloquently described by Redford when trying to get the British to move their collective ass. Ultimately making the entire sacrifice a tragedy.
