Most zombie apocalypse movies are about humans. Human choices etc. And since it is AN APOCALYPSE, yes, “human to human drama” will be the standard.

Literally, zombies in most games have literally just become the equivalent of environmental hazards

Because they kinda are. Their behavior is very one-dimensional, to the point that they ARE walking (sometimes running) hazards with 0 IQ. Since zombies don’t make tactical decisions, they will be treated as just environmental obstacles. And it does not matter how deadly they obstacle is - as long as it is survivable, people will keep finding optimal ways to say alive. And after that we run into real problem of apocalypse: Lack of everything. Shortage of necessities and resources. Infighting among humans during literal apocalypse is inevitable (provided not all of them died). Just look at protests - even in peace time, people can behave like complete monkeys to one another (beating, looting etc). Post-Apocalypse would split people into two groups: Desperate to survive to the point of losing humanity OR just bad people to be begin with using it as an excuse for their vile acts…

I mean there it genuinely feels like a threat since zombies are just so damn fast and aggressive it makes sense society collapsed as quick as it did. Downside is once alot of media recognize that slow shambling zombies arent scary everyone’s done it to death with specialized undead that now it feels samey. Dead island 2 is definitely a change of pace.

He is pretty right about modern trends. Zombie stuff does always seem like one or the other. The only times I've seen it being both about the zombies and human conflict is Romero's original Dead trilogy. The zombie stuff is the most interesting it ever got in the genre and the human conflict is also my favorite. It gets really sad and cruel, but it's never misery porn cause there's always strong sympathetic characters who stand by their morals and chose hope

I started the series because I wanted to see epic zombie vs human battles, not listen to some sweat-covered people argue about who is going to be the governor of the town for the next three episodes(before the town is inevitably overrun) or watch some unnecessarily graphic sex scene.

Dying Light 2 was supposed to be more like an I am Legend game than a zombie game like the predecessor. It's not that the idea of focus on humans is bad, it's a very interesting idea and it's very good as a base for an RPG. Unfortunately there's no proper execution of it in this game. You can look at the E3 2018 and E3 2019 demos to see how great it was in those concept showcases, retail unfortunately missed the ball both on narrative and art style.

@@HHTwice Techland had to rush DL2. It was remade from scratch in 2 years. Dead Island devs had zero pressure, because the game was LONG LONG forgotten and was deemed dead. It was way more years in development than DL2, so it makes sense for it to look better.

It is real there is bad people out there but they can’t be the main driver for conflict like in dying light. And yet they sneakily stole the drop kick from Dying Light and modified the rage ability to resemble zombified Crane/Aiden. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. I hope the DI 2 devs have planned out what they will do in the future with this game because by the looks of it it's very linear and there's not much to do after you beat the game with all characters available. It'll be so comical if they take a peak at Techland's game and introduce Agents and events like in DL2. In a few months Oni is going to post a video that will probably be titled "DEAD ISLAND 2 IS A FAILURE NO CONTENT!!!"

The main difference between Dead Island 2 and Dying Light 2 is it all boils down to what kind of story they're telling. Dead Island's zombie outbreak is a localised, mostly contained event that hasn't spread beyond California. Therefore, the zombies are the main threat that need to be eradicated and are the main atagonistic faction, because there's still a world worth fighting for beyond the quarantine. In Dying Light 2, the virus has long since wiped out global civilisation; it's a world where the zombies have already won. 15 years have passed since the collapse, so trying to focus on the zombies is basically pointless. Humans have also gotten used to their presence and treat them as merely obstacles in their ongoing fights amongst themselves in a post-apocalyptic world.

Refreshing. It definitely feels like with the *absurd* oversaturation of zombie media that people don't even really think about the *Horror* of a zombie apocalypse anymore. Zombies are treated as fodder, but in REAL life, or in the times before zombie movies were everywhere....the concept of *human corpses* rising and coming for people....WAS a horrific thing. Just being in the presence of a sentient corpse would be the scariest experience you've ever had, you'd never sleep knowing those things were just outside.

But there IS no story in zombies. This is why most zombie games focus on how humans deal with this calamity. Zombies have no motivation or desire or plan. They cant surprise or be clever. Making a story about just surviving or fighting zombies is as empty and predictable as can be. I am willing to bet that Dead island 2's story is going to be boring and empty, as is the gameplay. At least in comparison to DL1 or DL2. I wasnt a huge fan of either, but i dont see anything in DI that is "great", except the flesh pealing gimmik.
