Great episode and an absolute honour to be part of the panel! Nice to see Invisible Man at #1...Wow, Dead Last? I get it - I kinda enjoyed The Hunt (well, the first third of it anyways)...Underwater was decent, despite being a complete Alien/Abyss clone it gripped me (I just wish it had stronger characterisation)...Gretel & Hansel was okay; all dressed-up and nowhere to go - but it was probably the best-looking horror of it's kind since Sleepy Hollow despite being being dull as hell. Cheers Josh!

I've heard a lot of the "Alien(s) underwater" characterization of Underwater. And it's THERE. No doubt. I just thought that the pacing was so different than Alien(s) that it didn't feel like a copycat but a clever usage of a template. Also though, early in the movie I was equally reminded of The Descent, given the feeling of intense claustrophobia and impending crush threats. Loved that. The Descent is one of the few movies I've seen since I was a kid that actually scared me multiple times (sure, jump scares but also the atmospheric terror). I think I was just so pleased with Underwater because of its combination of these themes, the way the story was unusually but effectively paced, and, Cthulhu. 🤘
@mikeforshaw89663 жыл бұрын
@@thefourmoodgroups2589 Don't get me wrong I liked Underwater (it was my 3rd favourite here) - it wasted no time and I was gripped like a vice from beginning to end. The lack of stronger characterisation was the big let down for me here.
@thefourmoodgroups25893 жыл бұрын
@@mikeforshaw8966 Understood. Yeah that's a tricky balance. When you hurdle right into the action you tend to miss the typical beats/moments for characterization. It's possible to do both, and I thought Underwater did a decent job with it. They gave you little pieces of Norah through story elements rather than conversation, and the rest of the characters definitely lack depth. Ha! Depth! Anyway, it's a tough balance to strike. And I don't think it was perfectly done in Underwater.

Hunt is my Number 1, I loved this movie. I knew nothing about the movie going in to it. Based on the name & cover art, I thought it was going to be more like Ready or Not. Within the first 10 minutes I realized what the premise was & I legit got excited. I loved that they kept killing off the "lead" in the beginning. This is also the only movie on the list where I never got bored watching it.

Brahms I had as Number 9 mostly because they through away what made the Boy good. Having Brahms be a real person was a great twist, but this felt like an Annabel rip-off as others have said.

I put Invisible Man at Number 8 mostly because nothing much happens through the middle of the movie. Her escape at the beginning is great. Her plan to make him reveal himself is awesome. But its like they forget that she is a strong smart woman in the rest of the movie. Also at several times they forget he is Invisible & not a ghost. Like watch the scene where the sister is killed & she grabs the knife. It does not look natural at all.
@thefourmoodgroups25893 жыл бұрын
Hey Peter! I ranked Invisible Man 7. Glad I'm not too far out on that limb by myself! I'm in the video on it, but I would also add...expectations. I expected certain things from that movie that just didn't come through. A lot to like, but it disappointed me. I really try to hear as little as possible about movies before seeing them. A challenge to be sure! It's like, with Host, I had very minimal expectations, which allowed it to impress me a lot more. Granted, I only have that ranked 6, but, similar to the overall Dead Last list, there's a big drop off for me between 7 and 6. I implied otherwise in the video, but I do like Host way more than the Invisible Man.
@peterdanior45383 жыл бұрын
@@thefourmoodgroups2589 I didn’t know much about the movie either. I kept guessing what was happening and expecting a twist that usually didn’t show up. It is a good movie and is definitely better than other Universal Monster reboots

Good list, but the biggest crime of this list is that The Empty Man isn't even on it, let alone in at least the top 3. Absolutely majorly overlooked, mismarketed, and misunderstood horror of 2020, but that movie was in my opinion, one of the best horror films of the decade. Up in Hereditary territory. Has some similarities to it as well. If you haven't seen The Empty Man, do NOT watch the trailer, do not read a thing about it, just go in completely blind. Even the opening 20-25 minute pre credits sequence, if that was just a short film, it honestly might be one of my favorite short films of all time. Just brilliant stuff, and as a directorial debut, it's an absolutely unreal debut. This movie will definitely stick with you and make you think long after it ends. Can't recommend it enough, although it's definitely not for everybody. So glad it's finally been getting the praise it deserves and is gaining a cult following.

Kristen Stewart CAN act. The problem is everyone knows her from the Twilight movies, where she played a character with no substance. The reason being she was an avatar for the reader to project themselves into. As such she couldn't have a character that might conflict with the reader so she was just....there.
@thefourmoodgroups25893 жыл бұрын
I hear that. After watching Underwater I'd like to look into some of her other movies now, outside Twilight. It's hard to not be affected by the general opinion you hear about an actor, particularly when she's in successful movies that she's so strongly associated with. Just please don't say you would make a similar argument with Hayden Christensen. 🙃

Don't know if you've announced something like this being a thing, but you should have a "Dead Last Season Finale" where the dead lasts of each episode is ranked to find out which one is truly DEAD Last. In that episode, you should also start with the least worst, working its way down to said Dead Last.

My ranks in parenthesis: The Turning (9): Really boring. I can barely even remember it now. The Grudge (5): Surprised this is so low. It's not good but it felt like it tried more than a lot of the films. Brahms: The Boy 2 (8): I watched The Boy for the first time right before watching this and was surprised by how bad it was and yet Brahms was much worse. Painfully dull and generic. There's a wealth of killer doll films out there and this just isn't an interesting one. Fantasy Island (Dead Last): Thoughts in the video. The Wretched (7): Again, I don't remember this movie now. I didn't think it was awful but oI have no desire to ever watch it again. Host (3): I generally am a bit cold on found footage and ghost/possession type films so I was surprised to enjoy this so much. Not an amazing film but it's effective for what it is and at under an hour it's a solid return on investment. The Hunt(4): I was really expecting to despise this film, especially after seeing Josh's 1 star Letterboxd review, but I was surprised to find it pretty entertaining. The political satire is very cringey and ineffective but it's fun and Betty Gilpin's performance really carries the film. Gretel & Hansel (2): Thoughts in video. Underwater(6): Was disappointed in this. I really didn't know much going in but I love Kristen Stewart (you guys have gotta take the time to watch the good movies she's been in, not Twilight and the Huntsman). Unfortunately, it did just feel like Alien/Aliens underwater to me but without anything that made those films good. The ending was neat but overall I thought it was pretty meh. The Invisible Man(1): Thoughts are in video, but obviously this is the clear winner for a reason. Hats off to Elizabeth Moss and Leigh Whannel. Fantastic film.

Fantasy Island was my Number 2 for many of the same reasons that Professor Victor stated. The first & second acts are great. It's fun & interesting.
