Great Job , and great resolve to tackle this job, just wondering were those fittings Philmac Universal Transition couplings that got you sorted connecting onto that Old Lead...

Yes mate, they were the philmac universal transition couplers, I keep the common sizes in the van, just the other week I repaired some polyorc pipe in a school, they join anything and can get you out of all sorts of bother

Great video content as always.You have shown in your recent videos a few Plasson? fittings on mains water.If you have time in the future can you put flesh on the bone and show some detail on how you prepare say lead or gavanised pipe before inserting them into couplings.Thank you again.

Thanks mate, I've been saving bits of old pipe for a future video, I was hoping to find some YTW pipe but haven't come across any in a while, typical, its got a red band along its length is is paper thin. A top tip is always carry imperial olives and or convertors to metric with you as it will really stuff your day up when you come across the stuff, thanks for the support as always

The water regulations cover all wholesome or drinking water, they do state that all dead legs should be removed but to be honest there are literally thousands out there, I wouldn't be too concerned but if you ever get a good opportunity and they are easy to remove it might be worth doing, thanks for watching mate 👍

Have you ever came a across a dead leg on the cold causing a combi to fire momentarily when a cold tap is opened ?
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 2 жыл бұрын
It happens when air is trapped within the dead end of the pipe, its normally when old systems have been converted and the hot is just capped in the airing cupboard, removing dead legs can be a pain and I understand why people cap in tge easiest place, I guees adding a valve on the end of the dead pipe to purge the trapped air would eliminate the combi firing
@taitlawrence
@taitlawrence 2 жыл бұрын
@@PlumbLikeTom I had one today, first thing I seen when I opened the cupboard was a tail going up to where a mixer shower had been and blanked as an electric was in now so I fixed that and it was still happening, popped my head in the loft and the hot is capped and the main is still live all the way over to where the CWST. I didn’t do anymore as I was just finishing but I’ve put in a line to get that altered.

Tom , king of the water regs ,don't know how you can remember them all . 👍
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 2 жыл бұрын
I could talk for hours about regulations and plumbing standards, I can remember all clipping standards for copper pipe for instance of the top of my head, even minor gas regs to do with the minimum size of the letter G on the gas box for example I can remember of the top of my head, but i do not know everything, I have recorded a video on my OFTEC inspection I had last week but do not weather to post it or not, I firmly believe that the assessor made errors and I still annoyed about it to be honest with you, if I post the video it would be interesting to see what other people think of what he said to me

Hi Tom What would you do if a dead leg on hot feed is in plasterboard and customer doesn’t want too much damage? Thanks
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, its obviously a requirement to try and remove the dead leg, in the real world however you will always have circumstances where this is not viable or practically possible without destroying half the house, all I would say is just what you can, I am sure every plumber will have done combi swaps for example and just capped the hot in the cylinder cupboard

Some patience needed on both those jobs mate, who pays you for the enforcement jobs?, the water company?
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 2 жыл бұрын
I get paid by the water authority, if the water authority are not liable for the pipe they will try to recover their costs by invoicing the property owner, the sad thing is the job could have been easily sorted years ago without enforcement by just getting a plumber in to fix the pipe. I was on site 3.5 hours so the whole job plus materials would have been less than £300 to get sorted, now the invoice will be many times more than that unfortunately. Thanks for watching

Another great video. How do you decide when to solder vs compression fitting? Is there an advantage to using one over the other?
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, each method has its advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion soldering is the best and cheapest method of joining copper pipe but you can't solder with water in the pipe. Also it can be tricky in public buildings with fire alarms to solder inside the building, A hot works permit will also be required and often its not worth filling out the paperwork for a small job. My next preferred method would be to crimp as this eliminates the need for hot works and you can work with water in the pipe but the fittings and guns are expensive. Compression joints are also perfectly expectable to use but are expensive and should only really be use when the joint is accessible. You can join the pipe even with water in it and there is no requirements for hot works, Hope this helps

what is it with u english plumbers, u all seem to use boss white / blue/ jointing compound on ur compression fittings, u dont see anyone up in scotland doing it and dont have any problems. It doesnt help the fitting ur using are cheap and nasty but i know thats what all the suppliers stock nowadays, id rather pay the extra for kuterlite fittings and can walk out the door with confidence.
@PlumbLikeTom
@PlumbLikeTom 2 жыл бұрын
Fair point, to be honest I have always used jet blue plus on my compression fitting because that is how I was taught and never had a problem with them leaking, I understand what you say about the poor and cheap compression fittings, some are terrible, normally I find the ones with brass olives seem slightly better quality than the ones that come with the really thin copper olives, I will look into kuterlite fittings, thanks for watching and for the input. it is very much appreciated
