That gallo gun is bloody handy.👍🙂 Years ago, employers used to kick apprentices out after they qualified. After he's scratched his itch trying other stuff he may come back. One thing though he got great training from you. 👍

Sorry to hear about Jacob. I couldn't do the same thing all the time. Love the variety. As a 40 year old newly qualified L2 with G3 I can't afford an apprenticeship so I'm having to learn the hard way doing my own jobs and learning as I go. Jacob was really lucky to have such a great teacher. I'm onto my gas in January but I just want it to be a part of my business not my 9-5.

It’s a shame that Jacob left, but he couldn’t have had a better person to mentor and train him, and I expect he appreciates that. Personally, I would prefer doing the very wide range of work that you do, rather than just boilers, which would possibly get a bit boring after a while, but I suppose it’s easier. Hope you get a new person in soon to help out - being your apprentice would be a brilliant opportunity for some lucky person. Thanks again for an excellent video Tom, and have a great weekend!

It happens all the time, Tom . You've given him invaluable knowledge. He'll think back on many occasions thinking 'well Tom would do this' 😂. My boss put me through my gas . I'm still with him now (12 years later). The guy changed my life and can't thank him enough. Head down arse up kid .... keep it up

I'm not sure, I know where he's going and they do mainly combi swaps, they get 50 pound bonus if they do it in a day, it just means the lads throw stuff in to get the bonus money, they get charged 50p per mile though for taking the vans home, so it evens itself out, thanks for watching mate

Tip for the future. If you train someone up and pay for courses etc. Get them to sign a contract that they have to stay with the company for 12months eg. Or they will have to pay for it. If they leave before then.

The Jacob sinario is a shame Tom, but the grass isn’t always greener, it’s a shame for you, I worked for a bloke like you when I was Plumbing, and the variety of skills I learned was invaluable, I’m 58 now and been out of the trade for 30 years but still help out friends and family, because as my old gaffer used to say” they will never take your hands away lad “ and I still enjoy doing it, I hope young Jacob doesn’t regret his decision, but fear he may. You take care Tom and keep going, and you never know, I might need some work soon as I’m coming to the end of my second career and still got my tools 👍🚽

In future Tom anyone who's gas you pay for has to work for you for two years or pay back the money you spent on the training . You do a great variety of work which would suit me but not everyone is like that. Chin up ☺

Sad news, but my own industry it's pretty common for the young guys (and girls) to move on after their first few years - but if you hire a mix of newbies and people with a bit of experience, it all evens out in the end.

Great shame about Jacob. This might be controversial but I have worked for companies where if you leave you have to pay back a percentage of your training costs based on a sliding scale dependant on how soon you leave after you qualified. An example for me was retake your gas or oil tickets then leave you had to pay back %100 if you left within 12months.%50 after 18months not unfair I think. It can make people consider their commitment also importantly their employers investment providing their apprenticeship/training. Keep up the great work Tom wish you all the best for the future.

If you couldn't convince him to stay it's annoying i know but one day he'll live to regret his decision to leave, after a year or so of fitting and servicing boilers and he's bored of doing the same thing or he realises it's not as easy as you make it look he'll be on the phone to you asking for his job back at which point you'll have to think once bitten. Unfortunately being a young bloke he probably doesn't realise the best way to get on in any trade is if your being given the chance to experience almost every aspect of your trade take it with open arms, give it a few years then move on not as soon as you are qualified and still wet behind the ears because that is when you really start learning. ( I bet he'll be on the phone to you picking your brain about certain boilers when he's stuck).

@PlumbLikeTom exactly mate, if like you said he was going self-employed and wanted to try it on his own it still annoys you you'd of probably give your blessing but not going working for a competitor in the same area after your JUST out of your time after your boss has passed on his knowledge and experience and paid for all your training. I'm a Chippy and came out of my time 89-90, I stayed on with my boss for about three months but he was a one man band so for him to have to pay me full money was hard for him so I left and went self-employed down the country shopfitting which I've done ever since but thanks to my old boss I can cover most aspects of the joinery game. I actually spoke to him late last year after nearly thirty four years and he's still a great bloke who now has over a hundred lads working for him which I think is brilliant. Meant to say I love your videos, it's just nice to see a very knowledgeable tradesman going about his day to day work life in REAL TIME not this is the job then cut to the finished job. Keep them coming.

Don't worry about the pipe installation Tom .like you say its all coming out. Sorry to hear about Jacob .but if he only wants to do boilers then I think he is limiting his knowledge as a plumber. At least working for you he gets a wide variety of work .. I used to put a lot of time in teaching apprentices they don't realize how much there is to learn . But you never know he may come back .
