It’s been a while since we last did a study on the impressionistic stylings of Marc Ribot.. a favourite guitarist of mine. His work across a whole slew of incredible Tom Waits albums has kept me inspired for many years now. Today we learn and analyse the key elements of his “Dead and Lovely” solo. It’s a super short solo so I’ve also done an in depth breakdown of my extended improvised solo where we apply some of Marc’s ideas and many more things besides!
The lesson materials are a real bumper pack again on this one, not only containing the solos but also neatly typed out sheets of all the discussed key elements.. arpeggios, triads & scale patterns! This should provide you with inspiring lead guitar ideas for many years to come!

Thank you so much Alex, Marc Ribot is one of my favourite players and I'm a sucker for Tom all day! Such hard working guys. Immediately getting patreon resources with this one before I watch. I recently impressed myself and as a study nailed the intro and double stop hooks of Julian Lage's Tributary... it gets a bit bonkers down the line but I will overcome it... it's in great part thanks to becoming your passive student, so thank you for guiding me this far. I am a believer!

I am wondering if anyone out there in Alex's guitar community could comment from experience on how close a Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin would get me to that ES 125 sound. Thanks, Alex. I'm not very familiar with Marc Ribot's playing, but this seems like a good entry point - and you always make the lesson about so much more than just learning the song. I found your solo a great complement to Marc's, building on, and digging deeper into, the tension between the notes and the chords. The 1-2-b3-5 pattern is the main motif in "Alone Together" composed in 1932 (though I'm sure it was used many times, in many tunes before that). Any particular reason that pattern is attached to Coltrane's name? All good on ya', e.
@AlexFarranGuitar
@AlexFarranGuitar Ай бұрын
Thank you Eric, I really appreciate the comment! I’m so glad you’re getting a lot out of the lessons. Like you say, I think it’s crucial to take more than just “a new solo to learn” approach and dig into the deeper concepts around it. I’m glad to hear you enjoy that way of teaching too! To be honest, I’m not sure why Coltrane got the patterns named after him as of course, we can hear many players long before him using those cells too. Maybe he was the trendy name at the time! 🤷🏻‍♂️😅

@AlexFarranGuitar

I actually really like flatwounds, it’s just on this particular guitar they don’t make a good match. This guitar is already very dense, dark, middy and percussive sounding.. way more so than the es175. So the flatwounds just further congest and darken the tone. Whereas, these same strings sound beautiful on the es175 👌🏻
@mandolin-george-uk

@@AlexFarranGuitar ah I understand. Yes, I thought I’d heard you mention your love of flatwound On a previous video. I’ll need to beat that in mind as I as thinking of putting a set on as a trial but it might need more thought .. I took back a Taylor guitar as I found it too bright … are you suggesting flatwound might improve harsh bright guitars ? But muddy already woofy dreadnoughts ..for example

They are often better for recording bc they minimize string noise during sliding, for example. But they don't last as long, so it's a splurge purchase, only for special occasions.
