My late husband and I always went to California for our vacations and when we discovered La Puente Hills Mall, we loved that place in the late 1970’s. It was so hot in the desert, 114 deg., that we would get a cheap room in Las Vegas and then leave at 3 a.m. to drive to a motel near this mall, check in and then go back to sleep! 😂We always drove from our second stop in Santa Monica just to get a Dog on a Stick in the Food Court. You could fit 10 of our old mall into this place but it has been torn down and I still miss it. I miss my husband…..just spent my fifth Christmas alone without him. Forty-five wonderful years together! Thanks for the vlog and the happy memories it brought to me.

I used to go to that mall all the time back in the 70's and early 80's. In 1978 I bought my wife and i's wedding rings at Talmage Jewelers and rented my and the groomsmen's tuxes at a shop there. We lived 45 minutes away in Alhambra and the Puente Hills mall was our favorite place to shop. That place just had a vibe that all the other malls in SoCal didn't back then. We moved 2,000 miles east to the gulf coast 30 years ago because of the insane cost of living and extreme taxation. Sad to see it like this but it was elevatable with internet shopping, high taxes, high crime and the states unfriendly attitude to business. I'm still on the gulf coast so thanks for the tour.

It's definitely sad, but kind of an honor, to be part of a generation that gets to experience such pivotal societal changes as this. I can remember back in the early 90s, as a High School Senior and the modern Internet in the process of being born. Two of the first thoughts I had were, "Who's going to keep the internet clean/organized? When sites stop working, will they still be there, or do they get removed or what??" The other thought was, "This could end pretty badly for some stores/malls, etc. Companies that don't jump on the bandwagon and start selling here immediately, are going to be gone in 25 years." I was half-right 😂 😂 It's crazy how life, circumstances and global events cause (just about everybody) to just start doing things differently, leaving entire industries, traditions and processes behind.

I have 18 years of memories of The Puente Hills Mall. From 1974 until 1992. Christmas time was always a great time to be there, as was Summer. Back in the 80s, I came up with a method of completely avoiding crowds and the need to search for a place to park. During the Christmas season the mall extended its hours to open at 9am. I also noticed that most folks like to sleep late on weekends. I went to the mall at 9am on a Saturday. Hardly anyone was there. I'd finish my shopping by 10:30. As I went to my car, the lot was already quickly filling up. I used that method for many years. It's so sad to see it going away. There was a time when it supported 4 book stores: . Walden's B. Dalton Pick wick Zondervan's Oh well, nothing lasts forever. I wonder how The West Covina Fashion Plaza is doing or if it's still open.

During the hot summer after a short visit to the 24 hr gym i stopped in for a short visit. I went to the seats in the center and took it all in. Only a few folks moving about enjoying the open space. As i sat there they were playing all 80s music and the atmosphere was rather Gostly. Spent a lotta nice times in that mall all the way back to late 70s. Spencers, kaybee toys, Time Out Arcade, hot dog on a stick and my favorite was Bobs old Fashioned Ice Cream Bars. I always remember the Store that was selling Pianos or Organs or something. Someone was always playing music there.. High School times i was probably there the most. A couple days later i read somewhere that it had finally been sold. I believe the article said it would be modernized to have shops and boutiques but im not sure. Either way the winds of change are steadily increasing now. Maybe in the Future we can catch a ride on that movie car to take us back for a look ... "the way it was ... "

I personally think with the immense 56 acres this mall sits on, the new owner, RCB Equites, needs to create a mixed-development destination to increase foot traffic. Apartments (freeway noise is gonna suck for sure) and outdoor retail that can chain everything together.

You have 71 comments. You seem to have a love for La Puente Mall content. You should have a channel meet up at Round 1. 2-3pm meet and greet at the Round 1 food court area. 3-4pm walk around the Puente Hills Mall and photo op. 4pm end of meeting. 4-6pm walk across the street to the park with the 5 miles hiking trail into the backwoods.

Heyman, good stuff. Got a question for you and perhaps others may know the answer - why is it that some malls are "dead" and some are still alive and kickin? For example, Westminster- dead. Cerritos-alive.
@HEYMANWITHJAYMAN9 күн бұрын
@pauli4036 no clue. Could be city politics, could be greed by landlord, or things we don't even know about. Hopefully someone else can answer

@ some are dead dead and others have stood the test of time with similar stores chains. Same goes with our local swap meets. Love your material.

I think its location and owner. For example, most of the simon malls like brea, southcoast, del amo have lots of renovations and good tenants. Cerritos is not simon (I think) but they have a lot of good destination tenants and shops. I also think there is too many malls, so those that fall behind just are not viable without some other use like housing, outdoor dining, etc.

What's the point and a waste of resources to just keep the lights on. The last time I was at Puente Hills Mall was around 2018 and went to the movies. It was dead then.
@HEYMANWITHJAYMAN11 күн бұрын
Yeah why do these malls keep it afloat. Cant be profitable at this point. Only they know the logistics that they're doing
@ICallItAsItIs11 күн бұрын
They should just turn all these dead malls into like a hybrid commercial/residential spot. That would be interesting living in a internal self-contained community where all the stores and restaurants are within a short walking distance from your living quarters.

Some cities/states are indeed doing this.

There are kinda sorta 1s like that here. Residents upper floors and retail/restaurants down below but it's cheaper to shop & eat elsewhere vs on property

@@HEYMANWITHJAYMAN I think that was the original intention for the mall right before the Covid-19 pandemic then the company gave up on it.

When people started ordering online few decades ago it was the beginning of the end of many malls across America, only mall I know of that's still going strong today is the Riverside Tyler Mall in southern California.

I was thinking make the whole thing residential, but if businesses are willing to move in with residences above maybe it will work, and they can keep the parking lot rather than the newsom plan of building housing with no parking. This isn't near any mass transit so they can't use that as an excuse not to have parking, just leave the existing lot in place and there will be plenty of parking for residence.

You mentioned “Situation Period” earlier in the video, referencing the restaurant that closed in front of the mall. What was the meaning behind that phrase “Statement Period”?

Very dead. Not even Christmas decorations for holidays. Seeing this mall struggle like many, it would be costly and somewhat difficult with zoning, but a developer should team up with the city, to plan, and create apartment living on the upper floors to separate (meaning no public access to upper living floor) with stores on the lower level. It will bring in more need and utilize shops, restaurants, etc. and rebuild a new community.
