A Dead Mall tour of the University Mall of Tampa Florida and an update on Tampa’s Uptown Project. I was inpspired to explore the mall after seeing Stranger Things season 3 Netflix series’ Courtstar Mall. This is the second Dead Mall I have explored and I thought it would be fun and nastalgic to explore this mall. Also, I have an exciting channel announcement here! Stick around for the end!! Thank you for watchhng. There is much ahead!

Man I remember Mr Dunderbaks as a USF Student, pricy but great beer. Ruby Tuesday's had a great happy hour too. Used to see Rocky Horror at the cinema on the north side of the mall before it expanded and then in the cineplex they added to the East of the mall toward the University Collection. Perry's bbq was great as well in the food court. I grew up in Temple Terrace and remember how popular the mall was in the 70s and 80s, it does not seem that long ago.... Also gone are Tampa Bay Center, East Lake Mall past King High School and Floriland Mall on Florida. North Tampa and the Terrace have grown so much in the past 30 or 40 years. Thanks for posting it brings back lots of memories of growing up in Temple Terrace and going to USF back in the day....

Old malls should be converted in to Adult Fun Centers with many independent Restaurants, Bars, Clubs, Gaming Centers, Movie Theatres converted to places like Sports Bars to watch the Big Games and select movies. All indoors, no need to drive to bar hop, or to eat after last call.

We have a connection I also came from Indiana before my parents moved to Tampa South Bend Indiana to be exact my parents bought a small restaurant motel and trailer park Thonotosassa in 1972 and sold an 81 now it's a dump. Corner of 301 and Walker road. Big Top flea market used to be a racetrack and we go every Friday and Saturday night us kids that was our hang up for the weekend just down the street. There is a group Golden Gate Speedway on Facebook I go by Kathleen McQueen Wright. Golden Gate Speedway would make a good vlog there are many that would help you with it and give you a lot of history.

Very 'Dawn of the Dead' vibes. Do you know what's funny? Kids/teens of today have this vintage trend working well for them... BUT sadly they will never know what it's like to have the mall as such a central point of their lives. Heck, I used to save up my lunch money or search down the sides of the couch for a little coin to hang out at weekends. Amazing video Jay but really sad to see it so empty. I'm so proud to have been part of that time of life. I think it's amazing that you have merch! Looks very retro-video-game styled 😎 I just wanted to say, please don't feel uncomfortable about mentioning your merchandise and patreon. Man I totally get it, you don't want to feel like your asking people for money. You have built such an amazing channel... You deserve much more than you give yourself credit for. A lot of people are probably living through your videos! You take us on such fun filled, positive adventures. I think even with the uptown development unless they clean up the surrounding neighborhood it's going to continue to decline. Unfortunately the neighborhood the mall is surrounded by is a higher crime neighborhood which results in a lot of crime happening on that property and running a lot of people in stores off.

i feel like most malls now are dead. it seems like half the stores around my mall are closed too. Hot Topic ruuules. I only go to the mall to wander before a movie or if I'm looking for a deal on shorts (gotta have them shorts for Florida!) That was an amazing hot dog deal..please tell me you ate them ha. RIP Sears. Love the Stranger Things feeling music. awwww a tampa jay shirt. so cute, what good friends :-)

Oh yes, Stranger Things 3 has me feeling all sorts of mall nostalgic as well. It’s such a shame to see these nice big buildings sit mostly vacant or completely abandoned. And I’m all about a Tampa Jay shirt! I’ll proudly sport that. * I don’t think your link is working though!

2020 update: Most of the stores are closed, and the T-Mobile has been replaced. Also, you should check out DeSoto Square Mall in Bradenton if you want to see a real Dead Mall

That mall was the (bleep) when I moved here with roommates back in 1981. It was central to university life back then. There's nothing that USF would like better than to purchase and build on that property. I'm beginning to think it might be a better use of that land: I'm skeptical about the whole "new section" thing. What we really need, though, is affordable housing.

I can imagine how awesome it was I remember the mall back in 98 and it was still pretty busy then. I wish it would come back however I think he might be right I think the university should purchase it. I have high hopes so hopefully one day we will see the malls of America boomin again. Thank you so much Done I appreciate you sharing your memories so awesome my friend

It's crazy how you go to malls that you used to as a kid and now they're ghost towns. The mall was the hot spot. So many long standing strong stores have gone out of business. Very sad.

I used to go the all the time. That is sad. I bought my first leather boots and jacket there. There used to be a place to buy leather arm pieces with steeple spikes too. I miss the old metal scene. Nasty Ronnie did commercials for Shalimar back then.

I still go there every so often for a walk after going to Mojo Books and Music across the street. If you haven't checked them out, I've been going there since around 2008 when they were located a few units down from their current spot. Great coffee. Awesome video. Rad music. Was that TimeCop 1983 or The Midnight?

Thank you, Jay! I remember when the city I lived in was turning an outdoor shopping center into a mall. There was so much construction going on all around while all the stores remained open. The mall was all but complete, and I and all my friends would ride through it on our bicycles. We would always stop at Lincoln Savings (& Loans) to get a complimentary cup of coffee and a sugar cookie. Well, for me, the coffee was mostly creamer, but I felt a lot more grown up because I was drinking coffee. The Lakewood Mall, The Cerritos Mall, The Huntington Beach Mall, and the Buena Park Mall (California) were each a very important part of my childhood. It's great to hear that there are plans to revitalize this mall area. It just shows that "[t]here is always much ahead!" Keep us informed!

So I only covered about half of the mall I think I may have told you at Busch Gardens but the security guard asked me to leave… So I did LOL these malls are very nostalgic to me glad I could share it with you and bring back some memories buddy. I’ve heard some of the names of the malls you mentioned and I think there might be some videos on KZbin of them. Can’t wait to go back here I left out a lot of information I think I might do an update in about a year or so. Again thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to meet with me it meant the world to me and can’t wait to do it again brother. There is much ahead Mark

Due to the outrageous rent in malls those buisiness people who dared take the chance at setting up shop in the mall were forced to price their merchandise at premium prices. Now we have wallmarts in most neighborhoods. So when it comes to it all the paying jobs went to china in 92 so disposable income became obsolete. So you had to learn to cut expenses. Why pay $20 for the same item you can buy at Walmart for under $5 . Then in the 2000s kids got more into gaming and computers .then came online shopping and away went the mall .

In 2012-2016 I would always sleepover at my aunts house, and it was near this area. In 2014-2015 I would always come to this mall with my family. I would always play in the play place ( yes I know I’m young lol) it makes me sad knowing this mall is dead. I won’t be surprised if this mall gets demolished in 1-3 years from now
