horror films don't always need to be frightening/scary to be interesting and...fun as long as they have suspence and mystery, also a fantasy aspect, I'd say.

The movie was unsettling and haunting. For scares, I always use Jaws' head popping into view through the hole in the boat as being the 10 out of 10 of "scary". Dead of Night's horror sticks with the viewer rather than actual frightens them. The framing device/narrative is brilliant that pushes this movie into greatness.

The film's ventriloquist dummy segment definitely needs more credit, as it has inspired countless "living dummy" movies and TV episodes since. The Golf segment, I think is meant as a palate cleanser before the true horror of the movie that follows. And without spoiling it; the REAL ending is a very advanced concept for 1945. The main criticism is that the main actor is very wooden - partly explained by his disorientation perhaps. Also strange that they'd cast a German character so close to the war!

Careful now, Ben. Take two steps back, give a polite bow, and apologize to Oleg. We only have one shot at this.

Excellent review! Agree with a great deal of your reflections on the movie.

100% agree with everything you said. I really enjoy seeing horror classic like this, including the few that released just after the creation of the code/MPAA. It was fun to see how some of the stories from this probably inspired some Twilight Zone episodes (my first introduction to horror)

Unfortunately, my reviews of classics never get the same stats as current releases, but I'll still do them. I love watching these movies and I love potentially bringing something old-but-new to folks.
