My mom used to sing this to me when I was a kid, and I sang it to her as she was in the hospital for the last time. So I grew into an appreciation of some dark songs, Clementine, Ol' Shep, The Strawberry Roan. Country and Bluegrass have some really dark songs. I am faithful to Johnny Cash's version, but I love this version just as much, and your reaction was, as always, fun and funny. Enjoy the tunes and the adult beverages!

Loving the Dead South journey! Massacre of El Kuroke is a fav of mine and severely underrated. Even if you don't react to it, definitely give it a listen in your spare time!

Watch the video closer. It is actually one uncut continuous take. This group is amazing in so many ways. Love them, especially live.

The song was from the depression era about a man in jail and gets a dear John letter. So the way they play it fits the meaning far better.

Like many bands, The Dead South have evolved. The vocals get tighter, and the instrumentation gets more complex. Their latest album just dropped, and their single Tiny Wooden Box shows a band that has gotten better at what they do.

The first song is an old gospel song called "This Little Light of Mine"... they sing that song a lot differently than I've ever heard it... "You Are My Sunshine" was written by former Louisiana Gov. Jimmie Davis...

Thanks guys! Took a while, but you got there... The song is about a guy in prison whose wife said she would wait for him, but ends up stepping out.... and if you notice, the entire video was one continuous shot. My recommendation is Kasey Chambers - "Lose Yourself". Yes, its an Eminem cover, but it's not a rap version, and it will blow your frickin mind, and will work on this channel.

This was a great reaction guys I will say that if you listen to the lyrics of a lot of old folk songs, the lyrics are frequently much darker than the music they're played to.

My husband used to soak maraschino cherries in moonshine. He called them cherry bombs. I don't think he was the originator of this. He had uncles who were moonshiners.

Great reaction..... Different Strokes. Phrasing... the lyrical phrasing and major minor cords really drive the ... tone ( happy/ sad, light / dark ) of a lot of songs. I mean how many Rock songs do people mistake the meaning to? Seriously everyone's favorite 'Love' ... I mean Stalker song? I've always thought people were a bit morbid, then I realized, they just had no F'ing clue. Ring Around The Rosie.. Red Rover, Children's games, morbid shite, when you know the origins.

So many things I could say about this one, but overall they did a great job, like Keith said, at expressing the sorrow and anguish. I absolutely love major to minor covers. A guy by the name of Chase Holfelder is a master of that. You want to suddenly realize how creepy song lyrics can be, check out either "Every Breath You Take" or "Betty". As for the "horror" trailer you were talking about, a film professor in college played us something similar. Someone remade the trailer for "The Sound Of Music" and it is one of the best videos I've ever seen!

I've always considered "every breath you take" to be one of the creepiest stalker songs ever. Right up there with Benny Mardones "Into the Night" which somehow, despite the obvious content, got tons of radio play. - Keith

@@BourbonCountryReacts arranging it in a minor key makes it so much more creepy! Chase also did " My Country tis of thee" in a minor key. But he used some civil war era abolitionist alternate lyrics and it is incredibly powerful.

Now to hear it in a different key and it's absolutely tear your guts apart you've got to hear Chris and morgane Stapleton sing it... She sings the lead painfully in love and he does backup vocals

At least the singer wanted to feel better, and the band does sound good in my ears. It sort of reminds me of "poor Boy Blues" by Atkins & Knopfler on downers!

This version actually takes the song back to it's origins. It is not a happy song. Through the years, verses were lopped off and it was made into a "happy dance" children's song. The Dead South sings all the verses, which speak of lost love, regrets, lost hope and shattered dreams. The Dead South just emphasizes it by going to the minor chord.
