My daughter’s second last lesson before solos a plane appeared straight up from under her..it happened so quickly that her instructor who was looking down at paperwork on her clip board never saw the other plane at all, before or after. My daughter still had a year to wait before she could legally do solos anyway, so she was going to have to keep flying fairly regularly with an instructor, tho not weekly as she had..but, it scared her so much that it kind of blew her confidence and she never completed her license..she did beat cancer tho! But that’s a whole ‘nother story. The sad thing with midair collisions is that they do happen so quickly, and are so catastrophic..RIP Learjet Pilots.

Sad outcome of a "normal" training exercise. I probably have flown with or against the GFD crew during my time when I was active duty as a GAF TORNADO WSO. They were retired TORNADO dudes as I am now, I guess. They chose to continue flying after retiring from the real deal. But any kind of flying can still get you! So sad! No Martin Bakers in the Lear! Good, that the damaged Eurofighter made it back to Nörvenich safely. A "Well Done" to the EF-200 pilot! And his wingman. Crashes of military jets are a very sensitive public topic in Germany.

"Boelcke". That's a crazy coincidence. Oswald Boelcke himself was killed when he lost control of his plane and crashed after another pilot flew into him. Before a distant friend lost his battle to cancer, he told of a crash North of Denver of a 4 engine prop plane that nearly came down on top of them while they were out farming. They heard the craft taking off like normal & then a "pop" & the tail section separated. The engines slowed then reved & then shut down as the fuselage spun earthward directly at them. It was a bomb in the luggage compartment. The year? Probably in the mid '50's. Just a suggestion, but it too would make a very interesting video. Keep up your great work. The tasks should be rendered more precisely? If this was a real event - the civilian pilot would not be involved in any preflight "rendering." This is 100 percent on the chasing aircraft to be able to react to whatever the civilian plane does. They can't count on the civilian pilot knowing what the plan was supposed to be. How stupid was that... it's 100 percent on the military pilot for not being in a spot where he could take evasive actions to avoid whatever the civilian plane does.

@@chiefcliff True. And had it been an actual real life scenario, I would agree that all the blame should be on the fighter pilot. Blind procedures are so critical in formation flying. They should have known better
@Stubbies20034 жыл бұрын
@@EichlerHawk While I do agree with how this played out being more on the Learjet simply based upon position (he was flying wing not lead and one of wing's main responsibilities is deconfliction) if that was the normal procedure it doesn't make much sense to have the escorting aircraft flying in a lead position (harder to see what the suspect is doing AND fly the aircraft) then the procedure needs to be modified. Possibly assuming that the autopilot was still ON or going to be switched ON again.

This accident comes to show that even in modern times, mid-air collisions are still, now and then, prone to occur, even with the best of experience, guidance, and technology meant to prevent that very sort of thing from occurring. In this case, I would most likely attribute the cause of the crash to an overloading of stress on the Typhoon pilot, limited visual range on both aircraft, and the absence of a last-second TCAS (that’s in my opinion, there may be plenty of other causes that led to the crash). Nonetheless, I hope that such a tragedy will never come to fruition again, and that those involved, both the survived and deceased, have hopefully moved on from the crash and are now living in peace. Once, again, excellent work Allec, and stay safe and jolly, everyone!

@maj00724 жыл бұрын
Not to state the obvious but that's what they were doing practice and training. Once the classroom stuff is done you have to do as close to real life scenario as possible. It's a sad loss two men died but flying is by its nature dangerous and military flying more so.
@keithtynan74694 жыл бұрын
I believe that is the point of the question: what was the purpose or advantage of flying in close formation with the Learjet? The accident merely highlights the vulnerability of the aircraft to anything from accident to deliberate attack.
@gerrycollins23354 жыл бұрын
I suppose to add to the knowledge of what was going on inside the target's cockpit, you have to get as close as possible to see what the occupants are doing. In the end the target may have to be shot down, so any such information is valuable.
@thefreedomguyuk4 жыл бұрын
It's been 25 years, so I'm a bit rusty, but can't be bothered looking up the details. There are FAA procedures for interceptions & deviations. As far as I remember, the procedure does instruct the intercepting pilot to keep a distance of min. 500 ft. to the target. The rules also very clearly specifies that safety throughout the entire encounter must be ensured by the intercepting pilot. So basically, the fast jet pilot had one priority, to keep a safe distance to the business jet. Sadly, he did not follow the procedures.
@mikebronicki69784 жыл бұрын
@@thefreedomguyuk exactly my thoughts. What is the point of intercepting a hijacked plane if you come so close as to bring it down by collision? I would say the German procedure needs to be changed to match the FAA procedure. The "hijacked" plane is not going to be prepared to fly in military formation.

I just found out about British Airways flight 9 and KLM flight 867. Both of these flew through ash clouds from volcanic eruptions, which practically sandblasted the entire planes including the windshields and stripped all the paint. Both flights had a quadruple engine failure and in flight 9, passengers could even see blue sparkling light shooting out from the front of the engines, in addition to full flaming exhausts. The cabin was filled with smoke and the windshield was opaque in both cases. There are even voice recordings of the pilots yelling in fear on frequency. Would be very interesting if you could do videos on these two incidents. And great video as always, of course.

One plane was slightly above the other, and so neither pilot could see the other. There was a fireball, according to witnesses. All 8 people aboard the two aircraft were killed. This was a very sad accident. A DHL cargo plane collided with a Tupolev coming from Moscow, en route to Barcelona for a school trip. When the collision was becoming inevitable, ATC instructions were contrary to the TCAS instructions, which of course confused the pilots. In Russian society they were trained to obey instructions of their superior, so they followed the ATC, while of course the TCAS system was telling them the only correct thing to do. In the aftermath a Russian citizen, who lost his wife and two children in the accident, killed the Swiss trafic controller. I've visited the crash site twice, when I was in the area.

Question from someone not in aviation or security forces. If the situation has to be so scripted how is this helping to prepare for a real life situation?
@alex21434 жыл бұрын
Also not in aviation, but my best guess is that you try to break something complicated up in smaller chunks so that you can teach and train the smaller chunks individually. The reason for the extensive script for the exercise is that exercises are written to test whether the people involved meet certain goals, and how they perform on different elements of a certain task. Devising a script like this allows you to evaluate performance in a more consistent, standardized manner. I’ve been involved in writing cyber security incident response exercises. Completely different field of practice, but I imagine the process is more or less the same. Edit: good question by the way!
@seferinorino69514 жыл бұрын

IMO the premier example comes to mind: the 1966 General Electric Aerial Publicity Photo Shoot which was arranged for its shareholders where the NASA F104 participating in the close-order formation of several aircraft apparently was caught up in the wing vortex of the larger XB70 and the F104 was "pulled into" the bomber, killing the F104 pilot and causing the bomber to crash. This seems an inherently risky kind of procedure. Do intercepting aircraft have cameras, with a zoom, so that they would not have to get too close to the suspect aircraft? Also if they were dealing with a hijacker, are they going to know what the procedure is or how they should react. If you had a passenger who had taken over when the pilot became incapacitaed , which has happened, are they going to know what to do, or be able to safely fly the plane in close formation?

Or actually fly correctly in the first instance, doesn't need cameras ffs!

That Learjet sure is a pretty airplane... those fighter jocks were playing their role too intensely.

What is meant by the Learjet also being included in the description as "participating in a military exercise"?

Lots of civilian contractors fly military missions.

Allec, please work on a video for the recent bizarre Pakistan flight.

Would you practice drive a car on the auto baun in a similar scheme. Even with impact warning sensors. This whole piece of work fails if reaction times, speeds,turns, comprehensive visualization, tasks and communication are not cushioned with enough safety factoring in the equation. I just wondered at the end, why my home, my house has apparently better camera detection device than these fast jets.

Both the Typhoon pilot and the LearJet captain were at fault. You just do NOT fly in close formation with someone without proper planning (as the Typhoon did), and you do NOT manoeuvre if you lose sight of them (as the Lear did).

Totally unnecessary exercise. Do this in a simulator. The comms are the most important aspect, with ATC, and can be done...in a simulator. R.I.P. Lear Jet crew.

A very sad accident and the loss of two lives. The PIC should have taken control sooner. To many lessons are learned in blood.

I cannot believe what I am seeing here. Isn't The Typhoon pilot the more responsible one ? Why is he flying so near another plane and not leaving space for error or is he over confidant here. He is responsible for the death of the other 2 pilots. He could have foreseen to be more careful when he was leading the other plane and be careful for his slipstream so near the other plane.
