From a GD guitar standpoint John Mayer "gets it". To my ears he is coming from that same daring "seat of your pants" improvising that Jerry was so great at. I feel myself rooting for JM to nail it just like I rooted for JG so many years ago. From a technical standpoint his chops are great obviously but where he places the note on the beat is eerily familiar. I'd love to hear John's take on some JGB tunes too. After Midnight perhaps? How Sweet it Is. Don't Let Go.

he does that with everyone, just watch the youtube of him playing with BB and telling BB how he's stealing his music ) I forget the name of it, but it should be high in the search results because it is HD professionally recorded (it was 2 10 minute videos , maybe there's a single 20 min now who knows)

@StereoAnthony7 жыл бұрын
I'm mildly amazed how soooooo many people think the band is tight. I mean I LOVE the Dead just like the rest of us, but I"m still a musician and can tell when someone isnt playing well. ANY musician should be able to tell that the Bill and Mickey are barely holding things in time. If anything Mayer, Otiel and Jeff are keeping the rhythm and groove going.
@tonis5007 жыл бұрын
Cobham was the best drummer on the planet. Maybe still is. Mahavishnu was unreal. Billy will hang in there as long as the pay is good, don't worry.

DeadReckoning Hilarious, DeadReckoning. I first decided to seriously check out the Grateful Dead in 1981. I was 14, had been listening to rock religiously since I was 6 or 7. Already had a Kinks and two Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band shows under my belt. So I figured I know there must be more to them than Casey Jones, Truckin', Uncle John's Band and Alabama Getaway. Lol Went to local library and checked out Dead Set. Liked it. Particularly, Friend of the Devil and Fire on The Mountain. Didn't get to see them live until 1985. Long Beach Sports Arena. Caught them every time they hit So.Cal. after. Irvine Meadows, The Forum, L.A. Sports Arena, Cal. State Dominguez. Even went to Shoreline once and did a weekend in Vegas in '92 or '93? Whichever year Steve Miller was opening? Lol In '93, had a bad trip at a L.A. Sports Arena show. Got off the bus. Didn't get back on until New Year's Eve, 2015/16. The Dead and Company NYE show at the Forum. Man, I had been sober about two years then. I was digging it. From Feel like a Stranger. Sugaree. Uncle John's Band. Began to cry tears of joy when Terrapin began. I had been hoping to hear it. Still wasnt moved enough to repeat my experience of 30 yrs ago. Seeing them every time they hit the L.A., So. Cal area. So only saw them again last week at Dodger Stadium. Great fucking show. The Eyes of the World killed. As did Althea, Stella Blue, Fire on the Mountain. The final encore of Not Fade Away with entire stadium singing along and getting into the hand claps was just cool as anything. Love is real Not Fade Away clap clap clap clap clap Love is real Not Fade Away clap clap clap clap clap. Lol lol My point. I kept getting referred to as O.G.. lol I get it that I'm 50. I get it that most of the Dead and Company fans are younger. But damn, I'm running my 3rd marathon in October. I'm a 4.0 college student currently, and am heading to law school. Lol "old" is not what I am. Lol Experienced, for sure. But old! I'll run circles around just about anybody half my age. I mean in life in general, not actually running. Lol Anyway, DeadReckoning, keep on keeping on man. Us old timers gotta stick around and show em how it's done. Lol

Joe Moe I always appreciated the Dead and listened to their more famous songs (Friend on the devil, Casey Jones etc) most of my life but it was Dead and Company that blew the doors open for me and I now listen to both the Grateful Dead and Dead and Co daily. So I would have to say yes John helped a lot because I've always been a big fan of his. I think with Johns blues foundation I was able to relate to his playing more at first but have come to be a huge a study of all things Jerry. There are quite of few people with the same story as me also
