I’ve always been one to enjoy some of the “lesser Mopar‘s” as I’ve come to call them. The J body, R body, late 70s b body, rampage/scamp, anything with a slant6. I have known of the Mitsu challenger but never seen one in person and never ever see anything about them online. I think it’s definitely worthy of another video or two. Either way I come here for the cars but I also come here for the antics, I watch no matter what kind of trash you were gone. Keep up the fantastic work sir!

While I’m not sure I want to admit it, I have loads of experience with Mitsubishi product of this era. I had to laugh out loud with the idea of finding horsepower in that engine. You won’t, all of the carbureted Mitsubishis are pretty hopeless, I’m not sure a single one made three digit horsepower, regardless of what any factory specifications stated. Granted, all of my experience was at mile high altitude or more so that certainly didn’t help. I appreciate your enthusiasm and I hope you prove me wrong. Scraped off all of the challenger emblems on the examples I owned, to embarrassing, and just plain blasphemy in my book, I suggest doing the same. You might fall in love with The thing, it’s kind of fun in a drive a slow car fast, kind of way. But yeah, there’s a reason I don’t own any of those cars anymore and no desire whatsoever to see one in my driveway ever again. I have no idea what’s going on with that view account……….
@DeadDodgeGarageКүн бұрын
Someone else already scraped them off 😂 have you ever deleted all the smog equipment, swapped to a less horrible carburetor, then tuned one for power? Because I can already see the potential - and that’s before a jet valve delete, balance shaft delete, head porting party, and camshafts. I don’t know that it’s the ideal platform for making power, but I *do* know that there is some in there. I’m not sure I want to do all of that, personally… but it could be done.

I had an 82 model, Dodge Challenger, it was red and had 4- wheel disc brakes. 5 speed w/overdive. I think the reason it doesn’t idle very well is because with the original air cleaner, there were also a lot small vacuum hoses that had to be installed in just the right place and order. There should be a label sticker on the inside of the hood showing the hose layout. Also in 82 they got rid of those funky window louvers on the back windows on the Dodge, the Plywood Sapporo retained them.
@DeadDodgeGarageКүн бұрын
Nice. I don’t have the original air cleaner, and all of that vacuum stuff has been deleted. The original carb is in the trunk, but it will not be going back on. It idled perfectly with the Weber that I took off… it just had no accelerator pump so had a bad hesitation and made almost no power. The new one has idle problems, but it’s pretty great everywhere else. I’ll get it.

oh oh oh i have an answer to atlas, courtesy of the H.A.M.B.; "Atlas Supply Co. was formed in 1930 by the Standard Oil 'sisters' (Standard Oils of New Jersey, Indiana, Ohio, and California) to give the now-broke-up companies a nation-wide brand with a uniform warrantee honored across the country. They offered a wide range of branded parts at different times, including tires, batteries and cables, belts, hoses, lamps, wiper blades, full line of tune-up parts, filters, shocks, wheel bearings, u-joints, and even new 'universal' alternators and regulators (I've still got a 'Atlas' alternator around here someplace). Some of the stuff was simply re-branded (Trico wipers, Gabriel shocks) but much was made to their specs and was quality built. They had really good tires, Atlas did their own design/testing then had them made by one of the majors to their spec. Until their first radial that is; that tire (Cushionaire?) was an unmitigated disaster and they ended up replacing most of those on warrantee. The hurriedly-acquired outside-design replacement wasn't much better, and worse yet, JC Penney sold the exact same tire (with their name on it) for 40% less.... After the late 60s, Atlas tires were generally just a rebranded version made by whoever met the spec and were no longer exclusive designs". www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/chevron-atlas-parts.597041/, post #21 upgrade to badger from squirrel, more torque.

As far as fuel pressure, they don't like more than like 3psi. You may need to set the idle a little higher than stock, too.

You have the Weber carb conversion on that car. I had the same on my 1978 Challenger. I bought it cheap (about 8 years old) with about 80k miles, drove it 100k miles and sold it to a friend who drove it for another 60k miles before giving it to his SIL who put another 30k on it before it finally died. The Canadian models didn't have the MCA jet head (or cats). Mine had the same flat spot at 4k rpm - I think it might have something to do with the carb. It was the only car I have ever owned where you could change the oil without climbing under the car.

@ I also ended up with rust on my too, maybe being stationed in Pearl Harbor Hawaii had something to do with it, all that sea salt air, had real bad rust at the bottom of the passenger front window pillar. Ended up giving it to my brother who sold it for junk I believe.

Found rear brake shoes on parts geek and ebay. If these are so popular in Aus, there should be parts available. Also, there are some forums on the 81 challenger and saporro, so...not impossible. Happy hunting.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I should be able to find everything I need down under. Thanks!

I think it's great to see also something different. The most important is that you got a good time! Of course I will be glad to see more video with this joy car... 😊 I never think about this car like about Challenger during watching of this video. It's just Mitsubishi. But interesting... 🙂

That’s exactly what I’m saying! That’s how I see it. Not as a Challenger. I have a lot of fun with this thing, and I don’t have to worry about it even a little bit.

Fix the 81, i had a chance to get one years ago but missed out, I've driven a Conquest before and those are awesome, at the drag strip in Montgomery Al, i barley lost to a 88-89 mustang gt, anyway i love the channel and i vote fix it 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅

Glad to see what would be an otherwise overlooked "not a REAL challenger" getting some love

A 3rd Gen HEMI would make it a REAL Challenger

@@DeadDodgeGarage Good content. Enjoyed the vid. I really love malaise era cars, but it's just too easy to rip on them a bit. lol

My Goodness Jamie I see what you mean, I read the comments after the video, and it picks up 2,000 more views and 150 more comments while I read. and NOT names I see in other videos or the live stream. Well yes, the faithful are here.

People love this thing, I swear. It’s really interesting.

That's such a cool mitsu/ dodge. It's good to see one of these they hardly exist anymore

I also wasn’t aware that the heads on these cars were prone to crack, I once had to replace a blown head casket on my 82 Challenger when I was stationed in Hawaii. Once the casket was replaced, overheating problems were solved. Couldn’t do anything about the rust though.

I’ve heard head gaskets are a frequent issue. But the heads are known to crack around the jet valves.

It's totally up to you what to do with it. It's very unusual to see anything from that era on the road anymore. I am glad you saved it from the junkyard! Because I used to own a couple of mitsu powered k cars and had to wrench on them alot. It brings back memories and I kind of miss the old clunkers. If you do anymore videos on this car I will watch them whatever you decide to do with it and I hope you keep it. With all of the collaboration between Chrysler and Mitsubishi wouldn't it be funny if rear brake pads from a k car would work?
@DeadDodgeGarageКүн бұрын
Funny indeed 😅 but I wouldn’t bank on it… there is definitely more coming on this car. I like it, and the people have spoken.

Such a bummer parts are so hard to find for these cars. The Mitsumopar is super cool! I like your body work skills! If it works is it really a dumb idea? I’d watch another episode on it! Paint the wheels, keep tuning on the carb. That will make a very nice driver for someone at a reasonable dollar range.

Sounds like that’s where we’re going! People just love this little car. Well, many people. Haha.
