I Waited A Month For Parts And My Aces EFI System Still Doesn't Work (A Turbo Slant Six Update)

I don't know about you, but I'm getting tired of listening to this poor 170 slant six engine crank. My 1963 Plymouth Valiant Signet seemed like the perfect platform for a turbo slant six build. I've made a couple missteps as it has come together, sure. But in today's episode, I'm going to try and get the Aces Killshot Classic system up and running after revamping the electrical connections and adding a fuel pressure gauge. Spoiler alert, it just straight up doesn't work.

Jamie, my Dutch grandmother had a great saying. “All the best sailors stand ashore”. It means that while you are out there on the water actually sailing there are always lots of people who are shouting at you what to do from the shoreline. I’m sorry you have to deal with this problem, you’re doing great.

I made a Speeduino NO2C on shoestring budget (for a Lada 2105) a while ago. I've got all the "it is not going to work" stuff from my colleagues (electronic maintenance people), but to their surprise it works with a cam sensor made with a gap opto sensor and a turned down toothed belt gear in place of the distributor and with a wasted spark vw coil pack and runs awesome with no distributor. The next phase: "you are not going to be able to tune it", I drove to work (1 hour drive one way) and on the way home it ran awesome... Now I am putting a CV40 carb on it (from a harley davidson, because why not) and I've already got the "it is not going to work" on that too, but it already runs good after some re-jetting, and now I wait for some good weather to fine tune it. So, it is nice to see the faces of the people who say the classic "it is not going to work" line when it indeed works, hah! Love your vids on this project!

A lot of these aftermarket carb replacement FI systems seem like they're just straight up trash. I dealt with something similar on my '83 Datsun turbo. I went through a bunch of wideband controllers, and more than a couple ECU systems before I landed where I am now. I hope Aces is willing to make it right, especially with Dr. Art in your corner, but I wouldn't hold my breath, especially after how long it took them to send you a new controller and ECU. Fuel injected turbo cars are cool, but man are they a complete pain in the butt.

Not just "seems like", they are. They're not even as good as a single point injection system that came on cars new in the 80s. The entire idea is flawed, single point injection is not a direct replacement for a carburetor. Knowing the bad quality of a lot of aftermarket technological "upgrades" I'd be incredibly suspicious. We've already seen the terrible magnum force coilover conversion that isn't even structurally sound, and that's much easier to design than EFI. I have no confidence in aftermarket guys taking under hood electronics seriously.

Jamie, I almost bought the Aces for my 73 power wagon I'm putting back together. I ended up going with an AVS2 for "temporary", honestly could not be more happy with it. After having such good luck with the carb, and seeing your struggles with the EFI systems, I think I'm just going to keep it simple and old school and enjoy my truck! I've had my fair share of issues with my Killshot also, but I got it working pretty good now. I just started my car for the first time in about 4 months (since the winter started around here in Indiana) and it fired right up. What I found is a lot of the base settings had to be readjusted for it to be happy on my engine. Fuel prime volume and duration had to be changed in order to get it to fire up quickly. Fuel offset I believe it was had to be changed in order for it to run smoother and be more responsive. Basically, I had to adjust in the handheld the percentage of fuel given so it was as close to my selected air fuel ratio value as possible without computer adjustments. If the computer has to take too much fuel out or add to much fuel, then it doesn't really respond well when you "hit" it. I got it within about a percent or two so it doesn't have to add much or take away much. This took me some months because I'm new to really tuning and diving into fuel injection. Now during this time I've been able to run and drive my car while I figured it out thanks to other guys that know more about fuel injection and especially the aces systems and posted videos on them.

I think Speeduino is unbeatable for the price. And would work very well in this application with one of the myriad of 4 barrel throttle bodies with injector holes that are available on Ebay and elsewhere. You can probably even use the injectors out of the Aces unit. And it can do coil per cylinder ignition as well. Getting a bare board and soldering it yourself preferably with military or aerospace grade components is cheaper and you know the soldering is done right if you're decent at it. The through hole board is significantly better and easier to solder than the SMD one with the only tradeoff being a bit bigger size. I don't see any reason to buy a premade EFI system unless you really don't have the extra time. Especially for a TBI type system like this. And just pick up some LS coils from a junkyard or even better, Mercury Marine Optimax outboard coils, and use a reluctor ring to trigger the ignition. Use some aluminum tube and plate to make a cover for the original distributor cap location.

After watching the full video and reading some comments, I’ll offer this. If you have already tried this. Ignore. Automotive systems on the OEM side are designed to operate at 5 volt logic level on the system board to ensure no low voltage drop out during crank. With lots of noise filtering on the ecu board. My suggestion to try and isolate the issue, split the efi system to a SEPARATE battery from the main system. Do not connect it to your alternator. You could have noise coming from your charging system which is not being filtered out due to poor engineering practices from the Aces systems. Noise making into the processor can and will cause many random problems. Additionally splitting the power will totally eliminate the possibility of low voltage drop out during crank. I realize this is not a permanent solution but an effort to isolate a problem which could be related to aces system engineering and design. This would also explain why the other system worked but not well. Noise. Better board level engineering. Since aces they are a new, smaller company they may not even understand the issue. BTW, are you using resistance plug wires to suppress ignition noise? That could be getting into the ecu as well. Bottom line, digital electronics does not like or play well with high noise automotive environments. Mitigation is a must on the part of the manufacturers making the product. All major oems know this already. If this resolves the issue, I have other suggestions.

While I don’t think you have a bad idea here by any means, I know it’s not my current issue - and if I have to run the system on a completely separate battery to get it to function, what on earth is the point? I have already solved the voltage drop during cranking issue by routing the main power feed directly to the battery in the trunk, and the key trigger a battery fed relay. I know that because my previous screen shutoff issue is gone, and also because the car starts immediately with the Atomic system. And again, I agree with your concept and your logic - but by proving that a completely different EFI system starts and operates on exactly the same power feeds with the components in exactly the same places while the Aces refuses to do so, I believe I have good reason to skip these other diagnostic steps outside of the system itself. Yes, you may well be right in that the MSD system has more robust electronics comparatively. And if that is the case… I do believe I’ve proven the point on Aces. Thank you.

Understood. I was driving to understand root cause which could be solved by local remediation. Eg, the mopar voltage regulation on the alternator is a huge noise source. I’m not saying this is true but if so, it opens up other options as far as efi solutions go. At the very least I would have the 12v bulk power at the battery terminals checked with a shop scope to determine noise levels. Eg, 13.3 volts dc but 13 volt spikes at the right frequency could be raising hell with these efi systems. Other possibilities as well. I understand your point. Avoid all efi and that it is someone else’s problem.

One thing to be wary of- the old mechanical regulators can create a brief voltage spikewhich can fry delicate electronics. On an old points system, the battery would damp it, but an EFI system might not be so lucky. I recommend going to the 70 and up 3 wire alternator with solid state regulator.

I hope this helps. You probably did read it, but maybe not. Just like a connection directly to the battery. Anyway, per the Ace manual. 14.0 Idle Setting Once the engine is warmed up, the idle speed can be set to what is desired. Select the Tuning tab. Find the target hot idle speed. Move the button left and right to adjust it. Click the button to save the new value or select CANCEL at the bottom to move out of this screen. Whether you change the target idle or not, you need to set the throttle plates on the throttle body to an optimal 33 position. To do so, with the engine running, select the Monitor tab. You will see the Idle screen. Look at the “IAC Position” value. This value should be between 6 and 20 with the engine in neutral and up to operating temperature. Also make sure the “TPS” shows 0. If it is not, you need to perform a TPS Zero Learn by selecting wizards and tps Autoset from the menu. If the “IAC Position” value is zero, you must close the throttle plates until it reads a value of 6-20. Slowly turn the throttle shaft adjustment screw counterclockwise on the throttle body. If the IAC position is “stuck” at zero, it is likely that the engine is idling at a higher speed than you have set for the target idle speed. You need to adjust the throttle plates to resolve this issue. If the “IAC Position” value is greater than 20, it is a good idea to open the throttle plates until the “IAC Position” value is between 6 and 20. Do this by turning the throttle shaft adjustment screw clockwise. Note that if you open the throttle plates such that the “TPS” position goes above zero, you will need to shut the vehicle off and perform a TPS Zero Learn. Then, restart the vehicle and continue adjusting the throttle plates. Once the TPS goes above zero, the ECU goes out of its “idle” mode and will lock the IAC position to a fixed value. When the adjustments are completed, make sure the TPS reads 0 with the engine idling. Again, I hope this helps. That looks like a great project.

I'll do Jamie's job for him here, because you seem to be blind and deaf: The car does not run. It will not reach operating temperature, and idles with this system on it for a total of 0(ZERO) seconds. as a result he cannot "with the engine running, select the Monitor tab". Because, as you can see in the video, it does not run.

@@st4rd3str0y3r And I thank you for answering for Jamie. I realize my post was a bit of TLDR, but I wanted to list the whole idle set up instructions. The most relevant part (at least to me) is the throttle plate and TPS set up. Please look at this part again: Once the TPS goes above zero, the ECU goes out of its “idle” mode and will lock the IAC position to a fixed value. When the adjustments are completed, make sure the TPS reads 0 with the engine idling. You read that correctly, once the TPS goes above zero the ECU goes out of it's idle mode. So if the TPS is set wrong, the engine will not idle. Do the other problems stem from here? Unknown.

I'm completely with you as far as the 100lb injectors. If that unit has 65s in it, but the ecu is programmed for 100s, when it knocks down pulse width after the start, you run out of fuel. You could crank the feed pressure to the moon, but it would make no difference, the actual inj flow isn't there. I hope they straighten the ecu out. It's almost as if they sent the wrong unit, twice..

Jamie, love this build. I wanted to chime in on your TBI issues. Ive had the MSD and now the Aces set up on my mild build 440. While I have it running decent now I had very similar experience with their tech support. I will say dont bother with their spark control. It simply doesnt work. Im on the second ECU and 3rd handheld. It seems like they are guessing sometimes and ive gone as far as show them issues with the system on a scope. Yours looks like a different issue with fuel. I will say they update the software often. You might have a bad version. Its worth trying to flash different versions. Oh but btw not all versions work with their latest hardware either. Not sure if they still offer older versions on their web page, if they dont I have a few that ive had luck with I can share if yant to try. I know you love advice so if your running the aces off of the msd tach wire, don't. Run the msd off the point wire from the aces. Set the aces to magnetic pickup and not ignition box. Best of luck, Keep up the good work!

I’m on the Killshot Classic, and I don’t believe it is capable of taking the distributor signal that way? I *believe* it only has the one wire tach input connection. But I could be wrong. Also… wow. I think I misspoke on the wiring now I'm thinking about it. I do know I basically completely bypassed the aces ecm spark control. So I'm pretty sure I wired it like standard msd box wiring and used the tack out from msd to tack in on the aces like you said. It seems like your unit doesn't know it started, but I see you have a tach signal on the handheld. Weired. Anyways good luck I'm curious if you get this monster running on the aces setup. Like I said mine runs good now but I will say it doesn't Rev right up as it should like on a carb. If I nail it, it will bog lean. I've yet to tune that out of it and I'm on the fence of getting deeper in tuning it, or pitch it for a carb. Rock on!
