This is Mike's 1964 Dodge Dart GT. I did a video on this car a couple years ago. It had a smoking problem then, and it has continued to smoke ever since. It turns out that all of this could have been avoided if the assembler of the cylinder heads (ahem, me...) had paid slightly more attention to detail. As with most of my projects, there will probably be plenty of other useful things to learn along the way, so let's dive in and fix this Magnum for good.

OK... the TRUNK gasket diagnosis. I am officially impressed. My 64 Dart... fumes.. and a CO reading of 10 PPM on my Home Depot, CO detector. New trunk Gasket.. and Bingo. Zero readings on the CO Meter. Also... the gig with the Vacuum operated metering rods... "Superb" and I am feeling more confident about the younger generation. Congrats! I am a huge FAN now. :)

@@JimmyLoose Metalflake was introduced by the Dow chemical company in 1959 or 60. A few cars were done by Barris and others, then it received wide publicity in a Car Craft magazine article in February 1961. So it was widely known from 1961 on. Not many body shops used it because it was complicated to apply properly but there was usually one shop around that did custom paint and they could handle it.

Heij! Big fan of the red candyflake dash! You Mericans did a cool thing in the days with the huge flakes used. Harley Davidson did a hole motorcycle like that, as a kid I had it in the Easy Rider magazine sold in Germany and I was hooked, the needle went right thru the arm- that´s how hooked I was- kinda still am. That candy flake Harley looked so cool with its fifteen rear lights and lit antenna tips... This is a cool car- I even could live with the pedals but the shifter I´d rip out at once, too. Replace it with an 8ball thing. I am used to a more spohisticated, light shift feel where the gates are where they should be- this seems rather a loose proposal, a slight hint. All the cars I had were manuals, my old 67 Beetle had the nicest shift of all, the 73 VW Bus the worst. Its gates were like these. G´Day and Kind Regards

A few years back, I remember that everybody and their mother was looking for a late 60’s or 1970 Dodge Dart (especially GT’s) that were not totally rotted away. I assume the magority of them had the old reliable slant 6 but what was the biggest engine, that was a regular production car (not Mr. Norm type) you could get in a Dart? And before people laugh at the slant 6, there were cabs in my city in the late 90’s with 100’s of thousands of miles on them that had the original slant 6 engines in them. They finally junked them because the rest of the car parts were getting beat or the cars were rotting away….but the engine were still running in most of them. Amazing!

273 V8 was the only option until ‘67, at which point 383 big blocks started finding their way into the new, larger A-body - and then the 340 arrived for ‘68. Also in ‘68, someone at Chrysler finally had the idea to shove a 426 Hemi in the Dart. That doesn’t count as a regular production car, but you could order a 440 in ‘69 Dart if you really wanted.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I've been running a billet roller cam on my 408 stroker for years. I converted the roller lifters by removing the guts, then took an old set of lifters I had laying around. They were either mopar or comp cam's lifter's. Took the guts out of them and found the main body inside was near perfect to swap out into the magnum lifters. It took up the gap left by the spring and spacer near perfect. Had just enough room to fit the steel retainer spring back in. Did this around 12 years ago and been using the same set of lifters in my stroker and when it blew up I used them in a hot little 318 magnum and back to the stroker when I fixed it. Adjustable rockers needed of course but it didn't cost me any more than some time in measuring and digging through my stash of lifters. If you want, I had them out currently and I can put up a quick video on my channel to show what I did exactly and you decide 🤘🏼

I have heard that there are now 5.9 weighted flywheels for the 10.5” car four speed setup. This was the third 5.9 Mag four speed swap we did, and at that time either that wasn’t available, or I didn’t yet know it was available. The only factory 5.9 Magnum flywheels are the big truck size. Also, if you want the factory EFI to work, you will need the crank sensor windows. Sandwiching the flex plate also solves that problem.

What is the part number for that alternator belt because I have the same problem with the one that the parts counter shows and I need the correct belt. Thanks
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Ай бұрын
I don’t remember, but it’s easy enough to either figure out the next part number down, or go to the back room and grab the belt to the left of the one the computer says. I was a parts guy for some years and know how belts are numbered, so I just figured out the next number down and they sent it to me.

I don't believe I have ever cleared off 'The List' on any vehicle. I've made peace with 'Running & Safely Driving' level with 'To Do' issues, then add new issues- more rattles, a taillight is a bit dim, mirror vibrates above a certain speed, ...' The List' never really ends....

Sounds right to me. I don’t think it’s possible to reach the bottom of the list - the universe makes sure of that.

Dude, save yourself some aggravation and just buy yourself a valve spring compressor. The hot set up in an air powered one. By the time you do the first cylinder I can be done with the whole head. No muss,no fuss.

Jamie, love your content from Louisiana brother. Are those 150$ frame stiffening brackets worth it on a 71 plymouth roadrunner? They are a little more nimble than the 68-70.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Ай бұрын
Personally, I don’t think those extra stiffening components are worth the trouble unless you’re doing really extreme things with the car. I like sway bars and subframe connectors. I think that’s a good place to go.

my wife is selling a van i got to cut into a truck .just for the fun of it. think i still have some of the plastic from in side. told her to put to much on it so it would not sell. if some one made her and offer. she would most likely take it. she,e about to take a trip. and money for fun stuff would be nice venture van. brakes keep locking up from no moving. runs pretty nice. vans are nice for winter parts runs. it is mostly gutted. do not leave the radio on. found out what that does.back road into westport. left side about three blocks before four way stop. if you want. has a furn growing in it.

like the fact owner made his own parts when he could, out of what ever he could. Lots of info here, removing a holley... argh been using'em for years, yes they are a pain in the butt but tis what i prefer, with a chock that is. when filters start to run dry it's my vapor lock rearing his ugly self again, not the pump. check my vlog if you can stand it, check out my bizarre solution on the matter! Thanks for the video!
@DeadDodgeGarage

I’m not sold on that being vapor lock. It was warm that day but the car had only driven like a mile and sure wasn’t hot. I’ve got a Holley double pumper on the Demon for go fast purposes and it’s great. That car also has all of the other parts needed to make ridiculous high RPM fun happen. But the Edelbrock is my guy for any street car.

Why do you use silicone only on inlet valley ends
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Ай бұрын
Because the end seals in the kits often don’t fit with aftermarket intakes (or, worse, if any deck work has been done,) and they end up holding the intake up off of the main gaskets. Once, my brother convinced me to use the corks on a 340 we were building. So I did, and it leaked coolant into the crankcase because those gaskets didn’t seal. That was all the lesson I needed.
