The treatment of the Irish emigres in Britain isn't the only example of starvation being used as a tactic of settler colonialist societies to displace existing populations; same was done to the Great Plains tribes when American Bison were deliberately driven to near extinction, not to mention the destruction of orchards and the livestock of Palestinian herders in the West Bank.

A book I read recently (Nona the Ninth) had a similar point about the hypocrisy of such "outrage." There's a guy who learns how to use necromancy while researching how to save America/the world from a global crisis (Capitalism gets in the way) and is proclaimed as evil. The government is pressured into arresting the guy and his friends because "evil" so he uses a herd of cows to create a flesh shield around the building they're hiding in to keep anyone from busting in. And the people who initially proclaimed him as evil use this to prove their point because "cows have best friends" and "cows mourn their dead" and "cows watch the stars." It's written humorously to really nail home how ridiculous the argument is. The thing about "eating the ducks and geese" just really makes me think of that. If one of the talking points from these people become "Geese have feelings too" then the author can definitely see the future and we should definitely prepare for the coming necromancy apocalypse. [Note, this last bit is a joke]

Over the past week I have visited hundreds of comments sections and threads on multiple websites. Nobody can provide me with a single example of someone's pet being taken by Haitian immigrants. Every single time, WITHOUT FAIL they either: A) Show me the video of Allexis Telia Ferrell, who is not Haitian, and not from Springfield, Ohio, or: B) Show me secondary claims about ducks, which are not cats, or: C) Change the topic to an unrelated tragedy from a different town that has nothing to do with Haitian immigrants. Literally all I want is a single shred of evidence. They can't provide it, but tell me that I'm putting my head in the sand, living in ignorance, etc. While also admitting that it doesn't matter as long as the prescient point about "citizens rights being infringed" is true. It's so depressing, man.

One thing not discussed is that the Midwest is culturally presented as White ethno-region. It's the "Living Space" from which those of European descent erased (or rather internalized) their heritage and became White. And it's been the "Living Space" for White folks since the founding of the Ohio and Illinois territory (explicitly a White "living space"). This dynamic is why the area got so contentious during the BLM uprisings in the late 2010s/early 2020s, whether it be the pistol toting rich couple or the Rittenhouse trial. The targetting of the Haitian population is simply a means to target (and dehumanize) both the black and immigrant populations, to intimidate them into self-evacuating the space (whether it mean physically leaving the region or being pushed out of jobs/residence and into less visible and more marginalized infrustructures). It's an attempt to ethnically cleanse domestic "living space". And that's why mainstream society plays down how evil this rhetoric is because then it would have to reconcile with what it's supporting, it would have to actively acknowledge this is happening (like how it did a couple of years ago with LGBTQ+ folks in education)
@alexellis197
@alexellis197 2 күн бұрын
Being from Iowa, I can attest anecdotally that there is a lot of both sides here. Generally, the people I associate with are not ones to really look at someone weird unless they are actively being belligerent. Now, there are also a lot of the asshole type of conservatives here, but it is far from a homogenous culture here. A lot are like me and enjoy the variety. We have a lot of pockets of Mexican immigrants and a good amount coming from Vietnam. We get a good bit from places like Burma as well. While there is friction, a lot of people like me prefer to just engage with them as people and see what they are like. I am so used to seeing varied cultural influences that I just regard it like I do white people. If they are fun to talk to and interact with, I do so. If not, I will be polite and just move on. Historically, though, yeah, it was bad in many cases. As always, it is never as easy as a single view of a spot.

One important caveat here is that the general citizenry of Springfield Ohio and the town of Springfield Ohio officially have both specifically stated a huge appreciation and support of the haitian community in their town. This hateful rhetoric is often projected onto the midwest by others who don't live there. It's an ideological prop used by others.

Michigander here, people usually generalize Michigan to be pretty diverse due to Detroit, but as someone from the west side, your description is all too familiar. My town as of the last census is 96% white. I've heard people who transfer to our school express discomfort due to the lack of diversity, and one student even compiled a 137 page doc describing the racism students experienced. There's constantly right wing political groups trying to gain power and influence by running for school board/local government positions, and by protesting book bannings, trans healthcare, CRT, covid policy, abortions, etc. It's almost alien to me seeing how diverse and progressive some places are compared to Midwestern suburbs.

Much of the midwest initially became a white ethnoregion thru ethnic cleansing. Many midwest states have zero to few tribes as on behalf of settlers the US Govt and militias killed or forcibly removed Native people to "Indian Territory". (And "Indian Territory" itself, in turn, was opened to white settlers).

thinkharder9332 Foreign aid is useless. Prior to falling, Haiti's gov was still a puppet government. It also cannot restore the resources stolen. Even the seeds sold to them by Monsanto were secretly poor quality so Haiti kept having to buy larger quantities despite their poor yield. Haven’t watched yet, but I am so tired of hearing this crap. I live in Springfield, close enough I could walk to a park that still has sooooo many geese as they only recently started to migrate. I live near at least 4 new Haitian families, one next door who are nice. The langue barrier is hard, but still, they smile and wave and are just nice. We have had, and still DO, have loads of stray cats in our neighbor hood. Not one has gone unseen for more than like a couple days, which isn’t that uncommon for out door cats. Every day, I get to hear this bs, and I’m already tired of it. Our hospital has gotten threats and now it’s extra hard just to us the ER, which was slow as heck before. Now you may as well spend the gas to go to Huber! Schools too; funny how the people who complained about schools being closed are now calling them with threats making them close again, huh? Almost like the “think of the children” people don’t actually care about the children! A friend of mine talked with one of her neighbors, and found out she’s afraid to even buy her groceries now. I have an anxiety disorder that makes me already live with that fear, but to hear about someone else gaining? It breaks my heart and ticks me off. Our city is no less beautiful because of the Haitians, either. Covid killed quite a few local places, but that had nothing to do with them. I welcome any new business they may bring to fill those gaps. We have very little unifying “culture” around here, so the “culture shock” issues, at least to me, really stop at language and food differences. They aren’t eating the cats or dogs. They are hunting geese with machete in the park. They’re just trying to live their live, same as everyone else. Just leave them be. I hope it blows over soon, but I know it most likely won’t even lessen until after November. I can’t WAIT to hear how this bs is used to make parents fell unsafe for trick or treating too. It’s probably gonna be worse before it ends. Sorry to rant. Thank you for your time.

The most frustrating thing is people not realising that even if it’s silly to you, it can still have serious consequences. Shout out to this gossip-middle-aged-Australian-woman podcast, who acted shocked when they fear mongering about immigrants resulted in violence. They call themselves ‘left leaning’, yet they always forget to think about any minority group that isn’t them (upper middle class white women). Genuinely drives me up the wall how they so confidently act like they know stuff. ‘It’s ridiculous’ excuse me your generation ostracised Chinese immigrants because you were told this exact lie. ‘Savages eating your pets’ is not some silly thing trump says because he’s out of touch, it’s not even a dog whistle, it’s just a blatant racist talking point that has been used against every single non white culture. I’m rambling, but. My brain feeds on understanding cause and effect. I like patterns, parallels. And I cannot cope with seeing the same things being recycled for every minority group and having people whose only marginalised identity is being a woman acting like everything is stand alone.

I wish this video didn't exist in the sense that I wish it didn't HAVE to exist. But it does. Because the Republican party and its votebase have been increasingly radicalized since the days of Reagan and it's all come to a head with Trump. It's not enough to get Kamala elected to ensure he doesn't. It's a matter of ensuring there's Democrats at every level of government. Sure, by European standards, most Democrats would probably be considered centrists or center right, but better that than far right lunatics who would burn down the world so Trump could reign as the richest man in the cemetary.

For one of my history classes in college (years and years ago) I did a large project that was both term paper and presentation on the Irish potato famine... suffice to say I'm familiar with that absolute shitshow of mismanagement especially since my project focused primarily on what was going on in Ireland and how it affected the country for years to come. What often doesn't get covered is that there was an abundance of food available being produced from Ireland in wheat, barley, rye, and even livestock... all owned by English lords or Irish upperclass trying to curry favor with the English lords. The workforce wasn't allowed to use any of it for themselves as it was all shipped to other countries for profit. It is why the Irish became so dependent on potatoes as their personal food source in the first place and makes it extra vile that during the famine they were not allowed to use any of the food they producing for their imperial lords for their own survival. Profit above people... nothing has effing changed.

@@RFNY315gender affirming care is an umbrella term. When you begin transitioning, particularly if you transition young, you have what is called a social transition. You use a different name, different pronouns, dress and speak differently, and that is gender affirming care. The next step is hormone replacement therapy, a process which is also part of gender affirming care. gender affirmation surgeries are a lot more uncommon, It is entirely disingenuous to say that Harris is doing surgeries.

@@RFNY315 those first steps can apply to anyone. If someone is in prison and begins transitioning they are not going to get surgery. Knowing my taxes went to that and continue to fund horrific things like the actions of Israel makes me so extremely angry. "America took advantage of them and now they demonize them" is honestly applicable to so many situations, including the war in Ukraine. Here's the brief history: after the breakup of the USSR, the US was the one who heavily pushed for Ukraine to give up its nukes as part of the nuclear nonproliferation policy, but by doing so Ukraine lost one of its main deterrence that could've given Russia pause for consideration about attacking them. Yes, Ukraine lacked the launch codes, but they could've probably deciphered them after a few years if they really wanted to, but instead they decided to rely on a collective security treaty. But not only did Ukraine give up its nukes TO RUSSIA, it also agreed to destroy its strategic bombers fleet and also gave Russia its ballistic missiles, many of which Russia now fires back into Ukraine. This was in the 90s. Then in the early 2000s, Obama as senator went to Ukraine specifically to extend this disarmament policy to also cover thousands of tonns of guns and ammunition, he won 48 million dollars in federal funding to do so. Then 2008 came along and both Ukraine and Georgia attempted to enter NATO by going through the first step, getting a membership action plan, but both were rejected due to fears of what Russia would do, essentially admitting that Russia had an imperialist claim of a sphere of influence over them. Then Georgia got attacked later that same year, and Ukraine a few years later. And the US did nothing. Then 2014 came along and following the revolution that happened after their corrupt pro Russian president (which came to power partly due to the efforts of Paul Manafort) fled the country, Russia decided to breach the Budapest Memorandum and annexed Crimea and started the Donbas war, and the US under the Obama administration did almost nothing, imposing some flimsy sanctions, because Obama, the same guy who disarmamed Ukraine, though that the US had no right to "meddle" in Russia's imperialist affairs which was part of his amazing policy of the reset of US and Russia relations. Putin saw this response and planned ahead. The Trump happened and in 2019 he tried to actively take advantage of Ukraine by withholding an aid package that was already approved for transfer in order to try to force Zelensky to make up dirt on Biden to help him win the 2020 elections. Zelensky refused, Trump got impeached, lost the 2020 elections, and this is one of the reasons why MAGA now hate Ukraine so much today. Then the 2022 invasion happened and while Biden did more than any US president before him to help, he still dithered excessively and allowed tens of thousands of Ukrainians to die while waiting for aid to be drip fed, all due to fears of how Russia would react. Again. Even after almost 3 years Ukraine still needs to defend itself with one hand tied behind its back. I know this is a long comment, but honestly it's depressing to see just how much Ukraine got exploited by the west and the US in particular. I know lefties focus so much on Israel and Palestine, and for good reason, but it's sad to see how little they focus on Ukraine overall, despite the actions of the US towards it, and the absolute danger that Russia poses to the stability of democracy in the west.
@rtechie
@rtechie 17 сағат бұрын
That's partially accurate. The big mistake was claiming that the USA somehow "installed" a pro-Russian president. That's ridiculous. The opposite happened, it was called Euromaidan. In a series of protests, organized by the West, the elected pro-Russian government was effectively dismantled. The war in Donbass was a reaction to that, started by and largely fought by Ukrainians. Half of the population of Ukraine are ethnic Russians and speak primarily Russian. This was because of a crackdown on pro-Russian people in Ukraine. All Russian language media was banned, pro-Russian parties were banned, pro-Russian politicians and judges were arrested, they even banned students speaking Russian in school. The conflict in Ukraine is very much a civil war, ethnic Ukranians who are pro-Europe versus ethnic Russians who are pro-Russia.

One of my great-great-great grandfathers came over during the Irish Potato Famine and settled in Chicago. My grandma told me a somewhat romanticized story about it, a story that her grandfather told her, but I wonder how much of it is true. My great-great grandmother (my grandma's grandma) came over from Germany with her family when she was a child. Her father was a skilled carpenter, and they arrived in Chicago after the Great Fire looking for work, but he had to change the family name from their original German name to the Swedish version of that name because the company he wanted to work for was only hiring Swedish immigrants.

I just think it's neat how history does weird things sometimes. It literally can be stranger than fiction. . .

One other inportant fact of Haitian history: In 1825 the French monarchy made an agreement with Haiti to finally recognize their independence in return for 150 million francs. Thus, from practically the very beginning the country was saddled with a massive debt that it did not finish paying until 1947. If that money had instead been invested into the haitian economy, its value in today's dollars would exceed 100 billion

An important thing to know about the Irish Potato Famine is that it wasn't really a famine so much as colonialists starving the population. The blight would have been manageable, except that the British demanded their share and chose not to change that despite the fact that they were causing people to starve to death. I strongly recommend listening to the podcast "Behind the Bastards" which did an extremely informative and disturbing episode about this. But anyway all that makes it even more apt a comparison. I also care so little about the unfounded prospect of being replaced I'd just welcome it at this point. Unrelated - Your eye makeup is so pretty! Are there any tutorials around that would show me how to do something like that? I have kinda hooded eyelids and that's the kind of eyeshadow style that tends to get recommended to me. I'm middle-aged and getting divorced and it makes me happy to feel pretty when I can.
