We didn't see much point in doing another Death Grips album review. At this point, you can place a safe bet on how we're going to feel about any further material they release. However, since so many of you were asking for Myke C-Town's opinion on it, he decided to do a solo review of No Love Deep Web. Check it out.

Calling it hiphop is deceptive though. If you want to put it in a genre whatever, but it's not like genres affect the sound of an album itself and NLDW is unique enough to not fit squarely in any genre.

The thing I love the most about this album was that it was gritty and abrasive in such a clean, streamlined way. I don't even know how they did it, and it doesn't really make any sense when you say it, but its fucking unreal.
@mskcrc
@mskcrc 10 жыл бұрын
It's not clean or streamlined. It's coherent. Musically, it's not particularly challenging. "Lil Boy" and "Hunger Games" do some interesting things with phase shifts, but it's not so left-field that it's hard to listen to. If anything, the intensity and violence of his lyrics and mood are hard to listen to.

I prefer the music and beats in The Money Store, but the vocals are better in No Love Deep Web, more passion and agression.
@Wabaanimkii

As a fan of many styles of music, I was able to appreciate Death Grips' style and abrasiveness much more than a casual listener. I remember seeing an interview with napalm death and the interviewer asked why the vocals were so grumbled and nasty sounding, but the lyrics were so well written. He compared them to poetry. The singer (I forget who it was at that time) Said "I have all these words, thoughts and feelings spinning around in my head. I'm trying to sing them, but how could you sing such angry words to peaceful music? How else would one sing this kind of music?". A paraphrase anyway. I think MC Ride is in the same boat.

I dig this review since NLDW is my favorite DG album, especially since it was more in depth than the usual "wow this is aggressive. stay noided" reaction-type reviews. How I interpret the "it's all suicide" line is that there are so many forces in the world that we accept in our daily lives, even though we know they're either killing us or just degrading our humanity. Cigarettes and other drugs/substances, for one. You could also think about how many of the things we consume today (cell phones, plastic) are coming back around to kill us by way of pollution, climate change and inhumane working conditions. Many of us are already aware of these truths, yet we continue to participate in it. So I really feel that line.

8:42 - 10:22 exactly, it is not typical hip hop... they claimed themselves as a conceptual art exhibition anchored by sound and vision... and MC Rides lyrics are sometimes pretty over the top and in your face - but that's what it's like... and in my opinion it represents this whole atmosphere and sound really good...

As much as I respect that type of conviction in an artist's vision, I suspect that Ride was in a different state of mind while releasing that statement long into the project. I suspect that their vision was probably different at the beginning, where it wasn't as intentional as the statement suggests. Still, I can see how in retrospect, that statement can still apply to an extent. Who knows, maybe Ride was always out there. I still suspect him to be someone who's experienced extreme dissociation and psychedelic awakenings and disturbing trauma which makes it hard to relate to his thought process, so I assume based on my frame of reference. I could be wrong.

Hey Myke, the corniness of "World of Dogs" ('it's all suicide...") I feel is the point of that song. Just like you say you sort of laugh at it but then the next song is "I got some shit to say just for the fuck of it" which I feel is talking about how suicide threats are taken from people who are so depressed and saying these things but not actually doing it (not killing themselves). But then the concept is completed at the end of the album with "Artificial Death in the West." Awesome album

I don't think any record has ever rocked me to the core as intensely as NLDW. Holy fuck this thing is badass. I'm really glad you spent that much time talking about the first track. That one was my favorite as well and the pacing, lyrics, exasperation, and the way it set the scene for the rest of the album was amazing.

C-Town you know your shit. When I was in my late teens I was deep into industrial and noise and I fucked with Whitehouse a bit, although too many listens really screws with your head and is probably unsafe for your mental health. Anyways, I agree. Death Grips never really got to me, although it should considering my widely varied taste in music including the very harsh, but I do GET it and for those into DG, No Love Deep Web definitely won't disappoint.

NLDW feels like the structure of Takyon mixed with the sounds of System Blower. I really like it a lot. You mentioned how this was the album you were waiting for in terms of it's abrasiveness and primal energy. But what about the tracks with the pseudo-psychedelic vibes, like Artificial Death and Pop? Did they take anything away from the sub-sonic sludge of the rest of the album for you?
