This is a truly magical song . Not because when it is heard , peoples hearts and minds are instantly flooded with wistful musings of their younger lives , often happy memories . Not because when this song is heard in a group setting ( particularly a pub or club in my wayward case ) , all types of people , friend and stranger alike will join in singing along together , often loudly . For 8-odd minutes everyone is a family . The absolute magic of this song is that the lyrics are sad and melancholy , yet the instant the first few bars are heard , people smile and become happy . Every individual has a list of personal songs that transport them to a joyful wonderland . This song lifts and takes everyone there . Truly magical .

That is so well put. And yeah anytime I hear this song it reminds me of when I would sing it on like the original Guitar Hero on the Wii. Like it brings back so many good memories and it just makes me so happy because no matter what even in tough times there is a little light in the back of our head slowly growing brighter than we can contain and we just have this ultimate feeling of happiness and we can't control it.

Absolutely one to cry over, especially because you have to wonder how the careers of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper would have gone. They were so young. The Big Bopper at 29 was the old man. Now I’m even sadder. I hadn’t realized quite HOW young they were. I love watching you reminisce about time spent with your parents. It’s lovely to see someone whose home life really was decent growing up.

It's crazy to think that two of them weren't even supposed to be on the flight that Buddy Holly ("That'll Be The Day") chartered. A seat was given up for The Big Bopper ("Chantilly Lace") because he had caught the flu and Ritchie Valens ("La Bamba") won a seat on a coin toss for crying out loud! Makes you wonder.

Don still has it at 75! They released this song on 2/3/21, the 50th anniversary of the original in 1971! Also, the anniversary of when the “music died” with the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holley, Richie Valens & J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson at the beginning of their careers. Home Free knocked this one out of the park! They were thrilled that Don McLean agreed to do the song with them. Love you, Sweetie! ❤️

This one always gets me, perhaps because I'm old enough to see all the references in the song that most people don't catch. On the front of it, Don McLean was a 13yr old paperboy, delivering the news when the plane crashed that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. An incident that rocked a generation during the early years of rock and roll. Most folks get that, and the guys released this on the 50th anniversary of Don's song, but also on the day, 62 yrs later of that fateful crash. But many don't get a lot of the "easter egg" references throughout the song. To the Byrds, Bob Dylan, Charles Manson, The Beatles, Mick Jagger and the Hells Angels who ran security at one of his concerts, and to the death of Janis Joplin. They are all in there. The song brings joy to the heart while its breaking it at the same time.

Memories, man, we are baby boomers, and my husband and I both were also in tears when the song ended the first time we watched. Now I've watched it about 20 times. In '71 we were young, the country was in turmoil, my fiance was in Vietnam for 14.5 months, friends were dying there. They were all being drafted, they were young, like 19-20 average. Soldiers were treated super bad when they came home from that war. A sad, sad time. At home there were riots and protests and anger over the war. Guys running to Canada to avoid the draft. It was not a good time. This song was right in the middle. It stood for a lot of things for many of us. But, back to the good stuff, today, this group we love and their incredible talent, the solos were incredible, the production incredible, the arrangement by Darren Rust over the top! He brought out the best in Don McLean as Don asked him to, pepped it up as Don also wanted. Don wanted to release this new version with HF because he said they understand harmonies. Isn't that great?! Also, the shorter version of the song was what was mostly played. After all the years of listening to this, I had never heard the long version, this one. Wow. Love your always honest reactions to the great music! Take care girl.

This is actually the original version of american pie.. don mclean wrote it originally longer. But the record company wanted him to shorten the song. So I'm glad home free and don mclean did the original full version.

Your reaction video (out of all the posts) mirrored how I felt. I grew up with the original but this is outstanding (and, yes, emotional for me too).

It's always a treat when I enjoy the reactions of the channel host as much as I enjoy the video. And in this case, it was particularly heartening to see how much Ms. Superstar was enjoying herself. Without, of course, doing any research to see if her reaction here is out of the ordinary.

Fun fact. You know the Weird Al version of this song, 'The Saga Begins'? So does Don Mclean, in fact, his kids are big Weird Al fans and listened to that particular song so much that in a live rendition of American Pie, he accidentally did a verse of the Weird Al version. Please check out 'Believer -Alex Boye' soon. I really think it will hype you up.

You are such a sweetheart. I was squalling right along with you. With me, the song that I remember my mom and dad passing down to me,so to speak, was "Ode to Billy Joe". Everytime I hear that song to this day I start crying happy tears Bec of the childhood memories.

I'm a late boomer, so I was a little too young to be tracking current rock music when this came out, but my big sister was just the right age. So she bought and played the Don McLean records (vinyl only!) and played them. For context, this was just a couple years after the moon landing and Woodstock, so it was right in the middle of big changes. I think she still has the American Pie album, but I got the Real Don Mclean album (darker, but beautiful) somehow and it is right here next to my computer/audio/turntable kit. Since I was short some of the music, I have been raiding the used music stores to get the now old CD versions of this era of music. It got me through my teen years and early 20s when things change so fast and I was discovering who I was. Oh, just to be clear, this song has always had massive impact on me. And only more as I learned the meaning of various parts of the song. Seeing Don singing again was almost too much. He has always clearly loved singing ballads. He must have loved having just singers as his backup band. This has been a great gift.

Always enjoy your reactions! I was 12 years old February 3, 1959 "the day the music died". I recall being at my friend Doug's house in his attic bedroom building model cars (hot rod's) after school when the announcement came over WING radio about the plane crash right after hearing 'Chantilly Lace' by The Big Bopper. We sat there, stunned and in shock for at least a half an hour not speaking, not believing. It felt like we had just lost our whole family. /RayK
