This happened in NY when I was younger. My buddy and I almost died. Easily the most terrifying experience of my life. By the time you realize what’s happening, you’re so exhausted you can barely swim. Luckily we were saved by a professional surfer, who saw us drowning. I barely go in the water since that day, seventeen years ago.

Rip currents don't care if you can swim. I've been a great swimmer (in Florida) my whole life. Parent's made it a priority given how much water we have in the state. Got caught up in a rip current one summer in my 20's. Water honestly didn't look bad at all and it was a very busy, people filled day at the beach. Honestly that makes it worse, because you have less room to maneuver. I realized how far I'd drifted in the current and started working my way back towards the beach, but you have to fight constantly. Even in good condition and as a good swimmer you get exhausted very quickly. And every time you stop for a breather, the current pulls you back out. It's 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Only way I managed it was to start diving down and swimming underwater as hard as possible until I got close to shore and then basically grabbed ahold of some kind guy who let me hold on to his arm and rest a minute. When I made it back to shore I was completely exhausted and shaking.

So, in other words people should listen to your bad advice after the smarter people says, DONT FIGHT THE RIP CURENTS, but here you are, as hard headed as can be, telling the geniuses online that they should fight as hard as possible. and we wonder why people say the public school system is failing... by the way, rip current is on top , your best bet is to swim with the current and dive and it will inadvertently push you back to the top. People drown in rip current because of panic and the nonsense you are advising them to do. rip current are similar to a micro burst but in water

i was told that once your out of it to swim parallel with the beach a bit before turning in. instinct tells people to go right for the beach, thats where the trouble begins
@e.turduckeny630
@e.turduckeny630 Жыл бұрын
@@bjvu9460 Actually the public school system worked out fine for me. The collegiate did as well. If you'd passed your own reading comprehension tests you'd have realized that everything I wrote was a personal account -- and no where in there did I use anything close to terminology similar to, "I'd advise..." I personally found what I detailed to work FOR ME specifically in THAT SITUATION. I didn't fight it for quite sometime (following the typical logic) and as I realized I was quickly being pulled out to sea -- not in line of sight of any lifeguard -- I decided to try something else and what I detailed luckily worked out. And since a rip current is primarily located on the surface of the water I was able to dive beneath the worst of it and make gains until I reached the shore. The only one being hard headed here is you. Completely overreacting to someone's personal account and projecting an enormous amount of internet rage for...well, no reason I can ascertain. It feels like you read a Wikipedia entry and then got on KZbin to proclaim your newfound intelligence.

When I was about 12 I got caught in a less extreme rip current on Ft. Lauderdale beach. There was no lifeguard and my sister who drove us there was sunbathing and paying no attention. As I got pulled further out I realized somehow that instead of trying to swim back in if I swam parallel or sideways to the shore but at a slightly inward angle I started making progress getting back in. Finally I was back where I could plant my feet firmly into the sand and I knew I was safe. I consider it a blessing or good fortune that the survival strategy popped into my head.

It's windy, but waves don't look that rough. If you're in a rip current just swim sideways. And you can always take a big breath and just float there for a bit if you get tired. If you try to constantly swim as hard as you can trying to get back to shore you're going to get exhausted.

When I visited Florida, I was about 8 years old. I was not going to swim because it was cold and the ocean waves were big. I remember standing on the line of wet sand right were the waves would reach as far up the bank as I thought they could. I remember after staring at the sand I looked up and saw a large wave that was big enough to knocked me over and I was sucked out into the water. I immediately couldn't touch the bottom, was fully dressed and had on running shoes. I thought I was going to drown and I don't remember how I got back out but I assume someone saved me. I was only able to doggy paddle at the time. Your kid doesn't have to be in the water for it to end up being life or death.

Allah said " I CREATETH THE OCEAN FOR THE SEA CREATURES & NOT FOR MAN. IF MAN DARE TREADETH IN THY WATER I CREATED FOR THY SEA CREATURES, THEN SATAN'S SERPENTS SHALL DEVOUR MAN & JOIN LUCIFER IN THE ETERNAL LAKE OF FIRE " Deuteronomy 18:18 .. So why even go in the ocean when the Islamic bible says so ???

People forget that all of us will float in salt water, relax and don't panic and exert yourself, most people drown in only 8 feet of water, learn to do 'bobs' sink to the bottom and spring back to the surface swim paralel to beach and when you are no longer being pulled out ride the waves in.

They shouldn't let people swim out there, when it's like that.

There were signs posted NOT to swim in the area where the ppl drowned bcz there were NO guards on duty. You can’t rope off an entire beach front bcz ppl don’t read and have zero common sense. Ppl should be able to enjoy the beach but to understand NOT to go in the water when signs are posted. Heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones💔😭

Signs do not matter, I live near a riptide and some people are grateful for the warning from me and some obstinate. I’m concerned for the children who don’t know any better. 🐬
