@@TheCharismaticVoice Yes, there is definitely some truth to that. Unfortunately when it comes to guys like Tim and Geoff people tends to talk so much about the low notes that it almost seems like they forget about the high notes, and I really think that is a shame, because to me a lot of the magic happens in the contrast that is created by having both.

It definitely changed how I view and will be singing the song from now on. I covered this song as a guitarist and singer in several bands over the past 30 years, and even as a bass, I would go up like everyone else does when singing it. His choice to go down when hitting the chord root notes gave it a feeling of a lot more tension and definitely fits the song. He did shift the key up one half-step (from A#m to Bm), which does help. With Geoff's lowest chest note being an F#1 and also using that note as a subharmonic a lot, moving the key to Bm was a perfect choice.... F#1 is the inverted 5th of the Bm chord. He knew what he was doing here and did it perfectly.

I am a dyed in the wool metalhead. I'm also a trained baritone although my training is decades in the past. I never really enjoyed country/western music but this song had an edge to it that came pretty close to metal. 40 years of smoking and 25 years of hard drinking took a toll on my voice. I stopped smoking a few months ago and my drinking days ended in 2006 (knock on wood that they don't make a comeback because I still want a shot and a drag, just not today). Geoff's voice is otherworldly. On my best day, back in the day, I could almost make it down as low as Geoff but my sustain wasn't there. His vibrato is subtle but pronounced. This man has a set of pipes like nobody's business. Sustain like a pipe organ. Range from second-tenor to basso-profundo, pretty much where my vocal range was. He's a real talent to be sure. It was fun watching you listen to what he had to offer. ✌️🖖

Great addition with the spectrogram! Btw, I had put your 'Pour unfortunate souls' through a spectrogram and there is at around 2/3rd a perfect rundown in the background of more than an octave. Consistent in tempo pitch and volume. Also Geoffs favorite note the A1 (in my opinion) is 55Hz and he regularly hits G1's at 52Hz and lower. Those notes are not visible on your spectrogram. I think you need to play around with the settings to make everything visible to al least 40 or 30Hz.

I was looking forward to your analysis of this one. 🙂 The spectrograph is an interesting tool, makes some details "visible", very nice. 🙂 I notice that many focus on the detail of the ghosts' eyes, but almost no-one seems to notice what IMHO is the most "ghostly" feature of them: they're translucent, you can see the landscape and the sky through them. WAAAY more noticeable, for me, yet very few seem to notice it. 🙂 BTW, since he covered "Way down", Geoff gave names to all the other Geoffs. Here you have, left to right: Jeff, Daryl, Geoff, Goff, and Jeoph. 😁 As usual, I'll have to watch your analysis over and over again, to take in all the interesting things you point out. Thank you for all this. 🙂 See you next time! 🙂 PS: will you analyse BOTH version of "Hide and seek - Ding dong", the one you're involved in and the one by the Bass Gang? It would be really interesting. No comparisons, nor judgements... Just the analysis of the two versions, to understand the differences, the approaches, and so on. 🙂

I did notice that. I am glad he was so inclusive, that's really cool of him! I am naturally Right-handed. Mom is absolutely hopelessly Right-handed and I saw the aftermath and how she struggled at two different times in her life when she broke her elbow once and then her wrist, both times on her good arm. She really felt useless while she healed up because she has always been weak as a kitten and twice as clumsy with her Left hand and arm. I did not want to be like that. I made a concerted effort throughout a lot of my childhood to use my Left hand for many things. Eating, drinking, opening doors, especially the more simple stuff, I can do Lefty. I can shoot pool Lefty (I am really no good at pool either way so that hardly matters), I can shoot basketball Lefty and fire a paintball gun with reasonable accuracy with the Left hand. I just happen to be Left-Eye-Dominant, which I think has also really helped me in some ways, even if it makes me weird.

This is one of my very favorite spooky Country songs, and I recall as a young lad listening to the Marty Robbins' cover on the radio, and getting creeped out at the unique take on Hell presented in the lyrics. And rather than kidnap Geoff, the lyrics say why he (as the living cowboy that day) was allowed this 'Jacob Marley-esque' glimpse of 'cowboy hell' -- "Cowboy, change your ways today, or with us you will ride, tryin' to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies." To be honest, it was originally written and performed by Stan Jones in 1948, Then covered by Burl Ives in 1949, That was quickly followed by Vaughn Monroe, Bing Crosby, and Peggy Lee giving their unique takes in 1949 as well. Skip forward to 1961 when "The Ramrods" did a purely instrumental rock version with shouts and whistles being overlaid, as well as Lawrence Welk and crew doing a cover as well. The Johnny Cash version did not come out until almost two decades later in 1979. Another instrumental version was recorded by the UK band "The Shadows" in 1980, and the rock guitar band "The Outlaws" did one of the most rousing variants to date in that same year. Dan Akroyd did a cover for the film "Blues Brothers 2000". There are many other performers who have done one off variants during concerts and other appearances as well. This version by Geoff Castelucci is a worthy addition to the legacy of Stan Jones.

Ok first time hearing this song and this version is just awesome. On a side note, this song is actually based on a true story that happened about half an hour from where I grew up in Crosby, Texas around 1890. It was an actual Stampede and cattle were driven off a cliff, and it's said that the ghost herd can still be seen& heard

Just wanted to mention that the story is much like the old folktales of the Wild Hunt, only based in the American Old West. Which is why it’s such a great, spooky song. The imagery is so vivid: Devil cattle stampeding across a sky that just stretches on forever; burning brands and sparks flying from their hooves, all the while being chased by those men who are damned for their deeds (or misdeeds) in life. Add on top of that Geoff’s amazing vocals and masterful storytelling, this has become one of my favorite songs.

Elizabeth...you simply MUST react to Tim Foust's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow / Stay." As with Geoff, he sings all parts, and it's amazing. And I think you might be REALLY surprised. :)

It's cool to see the graphs, I love stuff like that. I think this is my first time hearing of this guy. What's with deep voiced guys and lovely long hair?! I'm wondering if you'd ever cover till Lindemann/Rammstein again. I don't think you've ever done a video of him singing live before. They have some professional recordings of their infamous live shows like the one in Paris. I think Rammlied, Du hast, Sonne or Engel would be good to react to. 💗

This song was penned in 1948 by a man named Stan Jones. He wrote it after listening to an elderly Native American in Arizona relate a story about how ones' spirit enters the sky after death. I suppose it eventually applied to cowboys too? Thank you for a beautiful reaction. You are awesome.

It's not really that hard to slide downward, especially from those low notes. I am also a bass (can't carry a tune to save my life, though lol), and when I sing along with Geoff on those, basically all I have to do is relax everything (fairly easy to do when everything is already relatively relaxed on a low note) whilst keeping the air flow going briefly, almost as if I'm just exhaling the last of my breath. My two cents from the peanut gallery.

I discovered this song in a stack of piano music at Grandma's (I have played since age 6) and never actually heard a vocal version until I was nearly 20. It has remained one of my all time favorites and I like what Geoff has done with it. I note that Geoff likes to do his "solo" work WITH instruments while Tim Foust likes to stay acapella. I can only imagine what these two could do together other than lay waste to speakers. Again, I really like your analysis (spot on, of course).

I never really thought about it much with his sound placement and consistency.... now I will be always thinking about it! And now I hear it's always consistent, regardless of technique used. Even when he uses glottal compression on some of his lower bass notes, I can now hear he phonates consonants and vowels the same... that's crazy!

Liz, I LOVE your analysis, BUT I STILL think that you should listen to a song ALL THE WAY THROUGH before starting the deep dive. We are 3/4 of the way through the video, and I barely know how the song sounds. I have never heard it before, and I still haven't! You speak of context, but totally skip the context of the ENTIRE SONG, because you chop it up before hearing the whole thing. That's okay, I still love ya!

I like how the sound spectrograms really clarify what's happening. I was expecting "breathiness" to show up as white noise, but it looked like the cloudy area was fading steadily toward the top, which would make it "pink noise" (power going as inverse frequency). Is the breathy sound normally pink, or is it white with a little unequal filtering in the head of the singer?

I saw the premier, I loved how much work Geoff put into this video. I also loved how he used blue eyes for the ghosts instead of red eyes. Excellently done. Much love to what you do Elizabeth. Edit: A cool twist would have been for him at the end to turn ethereal and eyes turn blue as the ghosts.

You should definitely listen to the pixies! They were the band that repopularize the loud-quiet-loud sound dynamic, and were big influences for Nirvana, Radiohead, etc. You should definitely give them a try since Francis Black is a very passionate singer, my recommendation would be Caribou and Gouge Away, hope you see this!

If you really want to experience Grundge, then there is one band, and two songs that you really need to hear. The band is considered the original, and also one of the best Grundge bands ever, Mother Love Bone. You will love Andrew Woods vocals. The two songs are Temple of the Dog: Say Hello to Heaven, and Downface: Alone. Temple of the Dog is a tribute band, and Mother Love Bone's Andrew Wood is who it is in tribute of. Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were formed after Woods died, and each band was founded by former members of Mother Love Bone. The version of Alone by Downface you need to hear is the one in which Eddie Vedder and Layne Staley performed the vocals. Their combined vocals are amazing. Vedder is easily distinguishable, but Staley's vocals are nothing like what you have heard from him. Just be prepared to cry your eyes out.

And he does a lot of covers based on the video games and popular shows and gives this D&D-ish pirate bard vibe! As a baritone singer myself, it's always a rare treat when lower singing is appreciated. I feel like there's been too much push for bright and high vocals, and deeper tones get regulated to the background or as accents. So when I hear a singer performing in a low or middling range, it always catches my attention.
