Id love to see a video where you take say 3 monsters from say the MM and your scale them up, down and to the level of a Level 3-5 Party, Then the next video could be 3 monsters done the same for say a 6-8 party, then 3 more...you get the idea.

Would also be cool to do a lord of the rings style thing and have a monster like the witch king of aggramar and have the lore "no man can defeat it" which is kinda fun if there is a female party memeber. Or if you have a cleric and it can only be defeated by "holy magic" meaning radient

Kind of late to the party, but my current BBEG is a green hag who has used clever trickery to ascend to a seat of power, all while the PCs unwittingly assisted her ! There were clues and signs they could have found / connected, yet they didn't. So in a few weeks they're going to have to confront this CR3 monster in her lair, with all her artefacts and all the people she has "convinced" yo help her, otherwise she will have sufficient time to manipulate the dreams of the sleeping "god of gods", and effectively kinda unstoppable. My PCs are level 12, and I look forward for this fights, because odds are WAY against them !

Would love to do this with oozes. They're so different from anything else, so strange and unnatural, they seem like a perfect fit for this kind of thing. If you didn't know better, the first time you looked at an ooze, you would probably think, "How the heck are we supposed to fight that thing? Can it die? Is it even alive?" And, actually, they kind of already have some Witcher-y-ness built in, with all the immunities and resistances and being naturally drawn to movement and warmth. ... Huh. Are oozes already Witcher-y? ... I guess they don't really have knacks, unless you count low AC and terrible mental stats, which ... maybe? Well, anyway I like this method for Underdark creatures, like myconids and gricks, because I think the Underdark is the perfect place to do Witcher-y shenanigans.

I did one similar! it was a normal dnd setting but the technology was similar to the late 1800s. The players were in a city and spent their time trying to find out what was hurting people and how to kill it. Lots of investigations and mystery and difficult enemies with immunities and weaknesses. I’ve done poltergeists, wererats, leshes, a melangal (a super freaky Philippine vampire that’s way scarier than normal vampires), and had some hags that were haunting the players nightmares since the first session. It was super great and filled with elements of horror. I recommend you make the monsters sound very vague in the beginning, nothing is spookier than not completely knowing what you’re dealing with.

I hope they make a Summon Familiar spell in the future. Just a variable tiny creature that lets you customize them slightly. Such as picking any creature type. Picking variable speed types. One keyword ability. One damage type. Then the creature improving as your character level/proficiencies go up. Maybe balance it out by making them only last X amount of time, or have limited scouting purposes.

I think this is probably the best way to make a monster's regeneration trait more meaningful than just "basically you subtract x damage dealt every turn If it regenerates". Just picture it for example: a horrific aberrant drake that's said to be immortal, being impossible to truly scar the creature. You cut off its head or wings and they grow right back in less than a minute (say 3-5 turns), BUT during that time, the headless beast can't use its breath weapon or bite, and it has a harder time hitting anything. Alternatively, cutting off a wing will ground it for that time and remove a claw attack, potentially even reducing its other speeds. Regeneration can then suddenly go from "oh yeah it kinda restores health, thats pretty frustrating" to "if we don't keep that thing grounded and headless we're all going to die"

I personally like using mechanics from Monster Hunter, since it's literally about parties of four taking on big beasties. Have a feast night before the big hunt. What do they eat? How will it affect them? A special cook with good food or ingredients can give bonus HP, inspiration, resistance, and extra spell slot, etc. Taking them down or breaking a piece of the beast can be its own skill challenge. Now you can use your skills in battle instead of striking your big moves every turn. Let the monster have a big move. They can be telegraphed a turn ahead of time if someone has studied this monster during downtime or passes a check. This big move can be stopped only with a 1-turn skill challenge, but is extra risky for those involved if the challenge is engaged but not met. It can also run away and consume nearby terrain, animals, or smaller monsters to recharge uses of big moves or restore something that broke (i.e, if the clay coating on its back is broken, let it run toward a mud pit and roll around, but that's a potential spot for a trap or you can freeze or boil the pit). Let martial classes come in with At-Wills (like 4E style), so they can feel distinct and strong, and they can wait for special moments to turn the tide or optimize on a good situation. Teamwork to topple an enemy for a round gives advantage AND reducing their damage resistances / immunities by a step. Use minions and minion turns as it calls upon family or summoned creatures to protect it when injured. This can be extra "OH GOD WHAT" as you see it eat its minions. This also lets area of effect attacks gain more power under these conditions. Are there fresh ingredients on the field to concoct a shoddy makeshift antidote, potion, or boosting serum? Play with that. Maybe fresh honey stolen from nearby wasps or harvested in the bellies of giant ants can enhance these potions even further. Let the world come to life but also be in your arsenal. Are you going from high elevation to low elevation? You either get a topple chance during this strike OR an extra die of melee damage (this can make teamwork skills or athletic ability RAD). These are all real ideas from Monster Hunter that make ttrpg boss design fun for me.

@@TerryAVanguard oooh looks fun. I use the same vulnerability rules too. I think for slippery, it might take a little while if it happens every time you turn though. Maybe first time per turn you want to turn or stop moving, roll? And if you fail, your remaining ground movement keeps moving that direction? Maybe slippery act opposite to sticky and have disadvantages on grapples to and from as well. Dizzy can maybe work the same way, for first time they try to move per turn they might dedicate 10 ft of movement into a random direction or may fall. That way just d8 and simple, and there's a chance you might stumble somewhere along those lines. You can also scale dizzy up (i.e dizzy 2) to roll multiple dice for random dedicated movement first time they try to move. I'm a fan of these and might workshop these for some sessions. Thanks! I might have to play with slippery though. I like that.
@TerryAVanguard
@TerryAVanguard 3 жыл бұрын
@@BestgirlJordanfish thanks. Dizzy was supposed to be once per round. Slippery definitely adds some time to it. Most of these fights do. Im on the fences. It made movement and position as well as getting rid of slippery very important when it was every change in direction or stop. But it did take a lot longer. My favorite fight where, the angle one group was a little on the bad side and so when the angle came to stop them they cut off its wings. Another group befriended the angle and fought with it against some demons but didnt heal it. Both were really suprised when it wings got destroyed and it turned into a demon. The living memory and bliss because it really opened up for great rp And the ice mini because they were super cute

@@TerryAVanguard awww I adore stories of invested rp. D&D has the slowest and longest combat out of any ttrpg I've ever played (which is like... a lot. Like two dozen systems), only matched by Pathfinder, which is very D&D anyways, and Shadowrun. So, it's a rule of thumb for me to speed up D&D playing rules or make sure additional rules are fast, while still being meaningful. Or, that new rules might wrap things up even more.

First time viewer here. Ed Greenwood did something similar in his home brew campaign before TSR (pre-WOTC) bought the rights to it and launched the Forgotten Realms setting. Listening to you reminded me of the PCs as investigators in Call of Cthulhu. The fastest way to wipe a party is if the heroes walk into a situation without sufficient research and preparation. Okay love this. Fun take on witcher monsters in 5e. I would say though, Monster of the Week is another ttrpg that was basically designed for this, and maybe putting this much effort into making a campaign that focuses on witcher style hunts/monsters would be better served playing motw. Just worth considering if this is the kind of fight/storytelling you're after.

Though I should clarify, it achieves that in a much more narrative way. Like there is no AC for the monsters, hp is represented by harm points. with no armor 3-4 harm can kill a player. You describe what you do to investigate a monster and hunt/bait it into a potential confrontation etc. Interesting stuff, but I'd recommend it more for a full monster hunting campaign, rather than the side quest monster hunt or a specific boss situation

I'm probably going to give the Hydra a proper rework. I already give them a breath attack that scales with the number of heads they have and acidic blood. Time to give it regional adaptations! Resistance to piercing and bludgeoning! You can only kill it by decapitating all the heads and burning the stumps. It's vulnerable to fire damage and slashing damage, but upon taking slashing damage and losing a head, it regens double the next turn. Fire stops the regen as per usual. Lured by the blood of the larges local herbivore mixed with some herb.

I was unknowingly adding “Knacks” to undead in my game. Every Undead in my game have vulnerability to fire. It just makes sense to me that the Methane and other decomposing gasses within it would erupt and ignite. Making up for the health using numbers meaning there are just more undead for each encounter. Also higher level undead I’ve given pact tactics to, thematic in the fear they induce on adventurers, if there are more they get more powerful and use the fear of others to their advantage.

I'd be interested in your ideas for how to drop the hints or lore about these monsters to your party so they could prepare correctly. I would find that part more challenging than creating the monster itself.

I love your idea here, but how would your players learn some of this info without you just gamifying it and telling them? Like for your stagger example, I mean how would they figure that out? If my players attacked something and it took no damage, they wouldn't stick around to try to analyze it.

Not so good, if the heroes are at level 10, the monsters basically have around 14 resistences, and that is one more than damage types there are in game, I know that then we should go for 'someone who experienced loss', but I don't like the idea of monster that is practically unbeatable with 7 immunities and resists to all damage types

Its just a template that is designed to inspire the thought of making a monster "like a puzzle". I wouldnt think inside the box for this, just tweak things around and definitely dont make it immune / resistant to everything lol

@@TheDungeonCoach Pokémon duels very interesting, I plan on setting up a duel for my half orc player against his long lost brother to decide who deserves to become chief of the tribe, but I’m at such a loss on how to do it well. Btw I really loved your takes on skill challenges and I planned on incorporating many of those into my campaign

I literally filmed it, like I Shot myself doing a recap, but it didn’t capture his animation and conciseness AND I also go onto change it and adapt it so I decided it would be more clear if I let him say his part and me say mine But it totally see where your coming from and this is the first time I’ve done this, so super unique case, just so you aren’t worried Thank you for the feedback on this

@@TheDungeonCoach thanks for acknowledging; Its a good breakdown, I can just see how people could view that as disingenuous, or not adding enough of your own spin to fairly reuse the video/audio content as much as you did. Keep up the good work!

I’ve talked with multiple of the “big dogs” about all the stuff like this, they’ve never been upset because this is basically free advertising for them. Nerdarchy did the same and it’s something that is always positive because now thousands more people have a chance to be “exposed” to Zee that might not have before. So yea no worries, I would never just rip something off, and I’ve made sure to cite the crap out of it both verbally and in the video and the PDF. I also wanted him to present his system and then me present my changes so it was more clear on what was his ideas and what were mine 👍🏼
