Nice job! I would recommend acid splash lingering should do damage at the end of a creature's turn, otherwise it's basically double effect on the creatures you initially cast it on

Another way to prevent spamming healing cantrips: “a target cannot be affected by this spell again until it finishes a [short or] long rest”. This phrase appears in “catnap”. Then you could give the cantrip hp healing power. Another example to balance against is the Healer feat.

Very creative tweaks to these cantrips, coach! I totally agree how high level casters should be able to adjust these effects accordingly, and how when a homebrew runs into a subclass, a feat, or even a class feature-- it only matters if they're in your party!! Keep making bold changes, and good luck with back to school!

For close wounds scaling up, I'd recommend adding bonus temporary hp rather than allowing more hit dice expenditure. This would keep your cantrip from draining a finite resource at an exponential rate when you add in bennies like healing others and the like.

The Dungeon Coach The Dungeon Coach Honestly everything in here really does breathe some good life into cantrips as a whole. Plus, the resource usage was super smart. Yeah you can cast the spell as much as you want without using up spell slots but that doesn’t mean it’s infinite free healing. I’ve seen people try to bring “Cure Minor Wounds” back from 3.5 and fail horribly because they forget that because Cantrips are free, being able to heal for 1 point of HP for free can effectively give infinite healing. Honestly this is a super smart way to utilize hit dice. You’re not always going to get access to a short rest. And you’re not always going to have enough expendable spell slots to heal everyone up enough for a really tough encounter. So these are amazing things to have in the back pocket. And going back to the other cantrips it’s so nice to give some really good adjustments to some not so great spells (IMO at least) like the True Strike change makes so much sense. Just Making it a bonus action is just asking for abuse. It’d be a no risk Reckless attack for crit fishers. Especially if they take Elven Accuracy. With what you did is make it a really interesting supportive spell once you hit level 11 and it can really lead to some interesting out of combat uses as well. Say someone is running and you have to stop them. Cast true strike on them so an ally can shoot their leg and stop them for example. It’s a really elegant way to make the most useless Cantrip in the game, useful. Like yeah early on not too strong. If you’re having bad luck or something forces disadvantaged? Amazing. Level 11 you are basically like a tactician. Good stuff.

Man, Dungeon Coach, you are exactly the kind of enthusiast I didn't know I wanted to listen to. I sometimes felt pain looking at the existing cantrips like gust and thunking to myself "Who in the entire world would pick this spell to shove an enemy, instead of doing that with an athletics check?" But seeing that there is someone out there who doesn't just share my concern and want for improvement but also already tries hard to balance all of the changes? I simply instantly subscribed, not to mention how astonishing it is that you're also so willing to share your tome with others for free *or* payment in return as a thank. Overall, I really, really appreciated the fact that I simply found this video and was able to listen to your thoughts. (the coach attitude in all of this is hilarious btw). And now I think I got enough courage to also openly change and scale non fighting cantrips in my campaign, since I am sure players always starve for some variety besides the meta/best cantrips to chose from. And for the actual criticism, I'd suggest giving the healing cantrips that rely on hit die some sort of limit. As it then makes the short rest mechanic.. hm, slightly secondary? Healing with just your hit die and not with spells is a certain previlege as it's kind of a load of hp that you can use during "safe time". So I worry that giving players the ability to use all Hit Die into healing without having one short rest is going to make it all feel weird. Not so much inbalanced, as they then can't use Hit Dice on the short rest, but just a bit weird that they can just "have a short rest" within a few minutes this way. May create room for imbalance. Other than that, great content, highly appreciated.

For Thunderclap, I would have the distance you can push an opponent be any power level you have unlocked. For example, If your 17th level, you can choose the strength of your thunderclap and just use the five foot radius one if you so desire. The reasons are twofold. 1. Your character has mastered the precision required to emulate any of those strengths you have unlocked. 2. Sometimes you only want to push an opponent a certain distance away and maybe knock them into a pit. But if your forced to work with a larger range as you level, you have to constantly keep in mind your spacing if you want them to just land where you want. This way you can manipulate your strength to your desire within your characters capability

Love your stuff, I got turned onto the Dungeon Coach about a month ago and you have excellent ideas. One thing I’ve noticed is that you are reading the RAW Gust as dealing damage depending on how many feet the target doesn’t get pushed due to hitting a wall, whereas the spell definitely says that the target takes damage according to how many feet it actually moved before it hits the wall. Just thought I’d point it out.

I like the ideas and your content has been making me think a lot about homebrew for my campaign. My youngest (5) wanted to be Ironman in the campaign with his two brothers. I made him a quasi warforged wizard, so his flight spell was rocket boosters and fireball was a big missile. For his healing, since he is a construct and we ruled normal healing doesn't work, I came up with two things. He could use mending to heal himself out of battle. During battle I had an artificer create nanobots that could come out as a reaction and heal 3d8 damage. So far he has loved it and a healing cantrip made sense for him.

As always, awesome ideas. I wanted to add, only slightly off topic, I like the idea of spells becoming cantrips as you progress. When you can cast 5th level spells, your 1st level spells become cantrips. When you can cast 7th level, 2nd level spells become cantrips. And with 9th level capabilities, your 3rd level spells become cantrips. Anyway, keep up the good work.

I love this so much! When I heard you were making healing Cantrips, my first thought was a Cantrip that can only heal critically-injured creatures up a little bit. Something like, "you restore 1d4 hit points to target creature. This cannot raise the creature's hit points above an amount equal to their Proficiency bonus + their total character level/CR."

Another video to get my creative muscle working, Mr. Coach! I’ve always felt that as a character's proficiency increases their cantrips should as well *Especially the utility cantrips*. Your take on Thunderclap is interesting. I feel the knock back effect overshadows Thunderwave so I’d replace the knock back effect with giving the deafened condition AND people in the area can not take reactions until the start of your next turn. That makes it a good uh oh, I’m surrounded spell. At higher levels In addition to increasing damage I’d consider adding half damage on a save, applying the deafened no reactions effect on a save and expanding the radius to 10 feet maybe adding the prone effect at level 17. I like the control effect with Gust (all of the 'avatar' cantrips need to be rethought.) I think as the level increased, I’d allow the caster to choose which direction the creature / object is moved. It would be interesting if Gust could mitigate falling damage for the caster and grant more finesse with moving objects - like using gust to retrieve an item. Spare the dying is a big whomp whomp. Because who can cast Spare the Dying? Anyone with a Healer’s Kit! I was considering having this cantrip give these effects: The target becomes stable. Until the target gains 1 hit point or takes damage the following effects apply: - The target has advantage on all saving throws. - All creatures attacking the target do so with disadvantage. - If the target has not taken damage or healing after one minute the target gains 1 hit point. And Never Flirt with Firebolt!

I love the Close Wound cantrip idea, but for the level 5 perk of using your own hit dice, you might want to clarify the text around that, possibly limiting it to using hit die from the class which can cast the spell. Without that, a barbarian who took one level of cleric could start handing out d12's to a wizard (while not raging). That causes some room for unintended abuse.

Thank you for the great video! That gust cantrip will do very nicely for a djinni patron warlock player I know. It moved me to revised the rather underwhelming Infestation cantrip to well... infest something! You cause a cloud of mites, fleas, and other parasites to appear momentarily on one creature you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw, or it takes 1d6 poison damage and moves 5 feet in a random direction if it can move and its speed is at least 5 feet. Roll a d4 for the direction: 1, north; 2, south; 3, east; or 4, west. This movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks, and if the direction rolled is blocked by an object such as a wall, the target doesn’t move. At Higher Levels 5th Level: The spell's damage increases to 2d6. Additionally if the targets forced movement moves into another creature that creature must also make a Constitution saving throw on a failed saving throw suffering the same effects. This effect can only occur to the same creature once until the start of your next turn. 11th Level: The spell's damage increases to 3d6 and the spell's range and forced movement increases by 10ft. 17th Level: The spell's damage increases to 4d6. Additionally when a creature finishes it's forced movement, it falls Prone

@@TheDungeonCoach Thank you, I definitely had to join the Patron group, gotta love the homebrew thinktank. I also had a different take on Friends, For the duration, you have advantage on all Charisma checks directed at one creature of your choice that isn’t hostile toward you. When the spell ends, the creature realizes that you used magic to influence its mood and becomes hostile toward you. A creature prone to violence might attack you. Another creature might seek retribution in other ways (at the DM’s discretion), depending on the nature of your interaction with it. The verbal component of this spell may be slipped into the conversation. At Higher Levels 5th Level: The duration increases to 10 minutes. Additionally the cantrip can target hostile creatures that can hear and understand you, the hostile creature must succeed a Wisdom Saving Throw, on a failure, the hostile creature becomes enraged. It gains advantage on attack rolls targeting you until the start of your next turn. 11th Level: The duration increases to 30 minutes. Additionally you can target creatures that can hear and understand you equal to your spellcasting modifier(minimum of 1) 17th Level: The duration increases to 1 hour. At the end of the duration creatures affected by this cantrip assume a nearby acquaintance or friend tried to influence them with magic. So I made Friends into a pseudo taunt that doesn't step on the toes of Compelled Duel. While actually leaning into and embracing the target realizing magic was cast on them, and opened up a chance to cause some real mayhem synergy with things like disguise self.

I once created a healing cantrip to one of my players not related to hit dice. The character had time manipulation abilities, so the cantrip was also called close wounds. However, this cantrip could only heal a creature if it took damage on its previous turn to a maximum equal to the damage it took. I forgot the exact dice numbers but that was the idea.

Sure you make them better but if my inexperienced players can't trust what they read in the official rules they are going to feel lost. So true strike to auto hit. Yes. Love it. The cantrip is so broken no one should take it in its current form. Your new stuff like siphon life awesome but I'd leave acid splash alone. I had a similar notion about blade ward. I couldn't think of the best wording but I think it should last until the end of the user's turn following taking damage. This would allow them to take a full round of damage and potentially a chance to escape on their turn. If it only works for a single attack it is potentially less effective than the original version.

@@TheDungeonCoach Oh I think the thought experiment is great. I'm not sure that for me "Cantrips could be better" is a reason to increase their power, persay. For instance, the healing cantrip you came up with is pretty interesting, but I wouldn't use it in the style of game that I run. It could very well fit nicely into others games and I don't find it poorly made or over powered at a glance. Getting people to think outside the box is a great thing and many a house rule have I seen in the past of course. I'm not against them I just am wary of "Power for powers sake". Instead of flat becoming a Bonus Action on the ones that you've got doing that, I'd probably give something like Circle of Mortality or Combat Wild Shape's *can* do it as a Bonus Action so they can still choose to do it as an Action like those can. Makes more sense if they're getting more powerful/able to control to not lose/swap an option but instead gain one

Funny that DC came up with the idea of blade ward becoming a bonus action to cast, and over a year later WotC comes up with the idea to do the same thing, but the new earth genasi can cast it that way proficiency bonus times per long rest. Close Wounds feels very 4th Edition. It reminds me of healing surges. Chill Touch used to be a touch spell in older editions.

Really late to the game here but i think for blade ward, have the spell end at the end of your next turn after taking damage. this would put it a little more in line with the amount of damage it would soak to RAW. For instance. Currently you can cast it as an action and run into melee range and soak who knows how many hits. But with this house rule it would only be one hit. With the proposed change you could still soak as many hits with it ending at the end of your next turn, same as RAW with just a little added flexibility.

Poison damage should be baced on the saving throw. Damage should equal the difference from the save check and the save roll. The extra effects on cantrips should only take effect if you learn it with a higher spell slot.

I like the healing cantrip, but as-is, I think it would let players speed run their short rests. Obviously you'll still short rest if you need to regain some short rest resources, and I know your version of short rests only take 10 minutes anyway, but I'm thinking I'll change Close Wound from regaining hit points to granting temporary hit points. That way, you can't just spam it after a battle to fully heal, and the tension with other temporary hp effects would also help to keep it in check. I think also you add a line that requires the target to have less than their total hit points so that it still feels more like healing. Maybe it could even require the target to be below half hp. That would be a bit out there for 5e, but I like it.

*Coach,* I've had this idea for an Illusion cantrip I'd love to get your thoughts on. I wanted to have a spell that creates _Illusory Wounds_ on the target. But if they think they're wounded, then what? Psychic damage? What happens when they find out it's fake? So, what I came up with is... *Illusory Wounds* 10ft range V, S, M (gotta convince that target) Pantomiming with your weapon... humanoid target rolls an Intelligence saving throw. If the target fails the save, roll 2d8. If the target's total hit points is equal to or less than the amount rolled, it falls unconscious until the end of its next turn. If not, it takes half the total in psychic damage. No effect on creatures immune to charm or sleep effects. (Scales by 2d8) Great videos, keep 'em coming!

I really like these! I've personally always thought that by the time you're 11th level (or maybe even earlier) you should be good enough with magic that 1st level spells are super basic, and should become your cantrips; this kinda helps a lot of these cantrips match 1st level spells' power level, and makes them actually somewhat relevant in the later game. I would love to see a system where cantrips can evolve into specific higher level spells. If you have a sort of signature spell at early levels, why WOULDN'T you become so adept at it that it becomes a cantrip? I know Wizards get that at 18th level, but that's just so late for it to still be relevant.

With true strike, I would probably make it an action, getting double proficiency, so it's possible that he wount miss. And I would make 19 and 20 crits. If they already have this then 18, 19 and 20. So it's kind of a gamble. They lose all bonus actions, and get a bonus to attacks, but it also increases the crits which feel so good. Maybe this takes away reactions who knows ksksksk. I really like the healing cantrips but i do see some weird situations were a 1st or 2nd lvl pc could heal all the concious injured in a location with the close wounds cantrip by just tuching each of them. I personaly would rule that they aren't really "concious" for the purpose of that spell or would make them have to spend some time taking care of them so they had the hit dice to heal themselves

Siphon Life: add "this damage can't be reduced in any way", which is needed. Otherwise Shadar-Kai, some spells or abilities will grant an automatic halving damage. Thunderclap is way too strong in my opinion. True strike on allies is really strong too... One thing you want to watch out for is shifting too much power to at will caster abilities because that's what fighters should normally be good at. If there is no downside to the caster's damage output than nobody would want to play anything else. But well, I like the concepts.

Hey Coach, love the homebrew! I will admit I have a couple questions about a few of them. For True Strike, does the buff automatically become consumed when an ally attacks the affected creature? Does the mark last for the whole duration, or only until the first attack against the creature? This question also applies for the extended duration at level 17. Spare the Dying makes me question what you do with items like the Healer's Kit or the Periapt of Wound Closure. Do they affect Death Save failures as well, or do they stay as auto stabilizers? And I really have to question the changes to Blade Ward. The base form gives the resistance for an entire round, including your following turn, so why the drastic overhaul here? I'd appreciate any clarification and/or insight on these. Thanks for doing what you do Coach! Keep it up!

I even think close wounds is steeping on the toes of higher level spells. For example Catnap does basically what this does for classes that do not get abilities back on a short rest and that is a third level spell.
@TheDungeonCoach
@TheDungeonCoach 4 жыл бұрын

@Qwark62
@Qwark62 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheDungeonCoach This is the first video that I have seen of yours so I was under the assumption that you run RAW except for some minor changes. Yeah, the more you home brew the more you are able to balance. I was in no way defending catnap. I agree it is a very bad spell that should only be used in VERY limited situations, but as a DM we should at least look at what the designers have in mind with RAW stuff to use as a sanity check to determine how powerful our homebrew is so that we don't undermine the creators or make something that is objectively inferior to something that is already in the books
@TheDungeonCoach
@TheDungeonCoach 4 жыл бұрын
Kyle I always try and respect the RAW for sure, I agree with you there 100% But as far as “undermining the creators” they have gone on record multiple times of saying this is all just their own recommendation, and to do what you want and run with it. I keep perspective to the RAW for consistency for sure then

Question about True Strike scaling. At 11th level, "all allies within range benefit from this spell". Does this mean that the spell lets every ally get a free auto-hit, or just one auto-hit for the next ally to make an attack against the target? There is a huge difference here, and as written could be interpreted both ways.
@zreyon
@zreyon 4 жыл бұрын
Your homebrew healing cantrips are interesting, but I feel like they may be counterproductive to part of your rest system. Why would a party spend time short resting when they can instead have the cleric close wounds. I'd suggest that the target of close wounds has to suffer damage between different uses. It closes wounds, if they have no open wounds, there's nothing to close. That way it's useful mid-combat, but can't be abused outside (still can be used though, but only once). Siphon life doesn't need a fix like that because it harms the other the same amount, it's not a free hit dice for all the party so that one is cool. PD: I love what you did to true strike, now it's not useless.
@TheDungeonCoach
@TheDungeonCoach 4 жыл бұрын
Miguel Rebollo haha thanks man! Trying to shake it all up! But if that means the party doesn’t have to stop then that’s GREAT (also makes the healer feel like a bad ass) but I feel that it goes hand in hand with my system since I make short rests 10 min, what’s the literal difference between that and a cleric walking Around doing triage to everyone. 👌🏼
