Ok. I am a 737max f/o, i have flown the airplane for the past 2 years and it flies nicely, and it flew very well even before the accidents. Boeing did some major software changes including slaving the mcas system to both aoa sensors instead of just one sensor. I agree to the fact that Boeing was wrong on hiding the mcas system from pilots by not addressing it in the flight manuals. As for what happend to lion airs flight, airplane had air data problems the day before the flight. What i heard was that when moving the aircraft on the ground, they acidentaly hit the aoa sensor, instead of replacing it they tried to fix it in a poor way. Therefore the only aoa sensor in wich mcas system was slaved into was damaged. Flight crew was faced with multiple and conflicting cautions and warnings at the same time. We cant judge them from the confort of our chairs. Rip and may God bless and confort the families who lost their loved ones.
@richardbell76782 жыл бұрын
Actually, the worst aspect of the software was not that it was vulnerable to bad data, but that it could trim the horizontal stabilizer past the command authority of the pilots. The new limit on the stall avoidance software stops adjusting the trim before the nose will continue to drop with both pilots pulling all of the way back on the yokes. Before the new limit was added, the stall avoidance software would keep applying nose down trim adjustments, until the AOA went below the triggering value. If the AOA sensor was stuck at a high AOA reading, the stall avoidance software would keep applying nose down trim, barring some sort of pilot intervention, until the horizontal stabilizer hit the hard stop or the plane hit the ground.

The pilots who were informed of the change only got a 30 minute tutorial on their IPads from Boeing about all the changes to the model design; this auxiliary autopilot got scant mention. The 737 MAX is actually a very good aircraft. As Alec so accurately pointed out, the problem was MCAS and the lack of training regarding the system. MCAS was designed to make the MAX fly and handle similarly to previous 737 designs. The reason is so that pilots would not have to receive a new type rating to fly it. Pilots are only allowed to be certified to fly one type of aircraft at a time. Using MCAS to make the MAX handle like any other 737 was a major selling point for Boeing because it meant that airlines wouldn't have to retrain their 737 pilots for a new aircraft, which would have been very expensive and inefficient. The MAX can fly just fine without MCAS, but it wouldn't handle like a legacy 737 and therefore would require a new type rating. Where Boeing really screwed up was 1) they gave MCAS too much power over the aircraft's pitch, 2) they didn't inform operators of the system, and 3) they allowed the system to operate with no redundancy. A single point of failure, in this case a faulty AoA indicator, was sufficient to cause havoc resulting in the loss of the aircraft and all souls onboard. A smarter design would've been to make the MCAS system automatically disengage whenever an AoA disagree condition was detected beyond a certain threshold. The aircraft could then continue safely without MCAS. I believe this may actually have been one of the corrective measures Boeing implemented during the grounding. As always, well done Alec. RIP all those who were lost in the 2 crashes.

Thank you. This crash was clearly pilot error. The MCAS malfunction contributed, but proper pilot actions would have kept the aircraft completely under control. @@tomstravels520 You don't need a Sullenberger to handle this one. I had the same thing (uncommanded stablizer trim) during takeoff, except in my case the system was called Speed Trim (precursor to MCAS). But the result was the same, with the stab trimming forward causing me to pull increasing back stick to hold the nose up. Note that the nose did not "pitch down", simply because I did not let it. When I saw the uncommanded trim running against the need for increasing back stick I soon called for stab trim disconnect. EASY. After trimming the airplane manually we figured out that culprit was speed trim, but we did not need to know the source of the malfunction to retain control of the aircraft. It could have been due to a short circuit or an autopilot malfunction but it does not matter -- when the stab is running away you stop it. Boeing's expectation that pilots would apply the stab trim procedure was completely reasonable. I'm not saying I think the the MCAS system was well designed, or that pilots should not have been informed of it. I also think this information should have been included in their training and reference material. But that does not excuse the pilots who couldn't maintain basic control of the aircraft during uncommanded stabilizer movement. That is a critical event that every pilot must be prepared to recognize and correct, and it should have been the first thing on their minds rather than the last.

Let's not forget Boeing was in direct competition with Airbus who were wiping the floor with Boeing regarding aircraft and fuel efficiency. Boeing's answer was to take an existing aircraft model and stick more fuel efficient engines on it. The bigger engines were then discovered to be too close to the ground for safety so they were then re-positioned on the wings leading to the aircraft being extremely unstable and more difficult to fly. The answer? Stick a new software system in to the computer and that'll take care of it. Bye the way, we don't need to tell anyone about it, least of all the guys who fly the thing....and the rest is history. Boeing.......a real shite-arse company who now have one of the worst reputations in the airline industry and a dreadful public relations reputation. The execs (and they knew about this shambles beforehand) should be prosecuted for corporate manslaughter.

"Software is trash, MCAS is questionable.... but check out the sherpa fleece we got on these pilot seats!" - Boeing exec in 2017, probably. edit: I'd like to add that I have learned about the federal investigation against the firm Girardi & Keese and how they stole the settlement money from the families of the victims of this crash, with the wife of Girardi going on reality TV and painting herself a victim of 'greed' while wearing million-dollar diamond earrings purchased with a check directly from the victims' settlement account. This whole mess is heartbreaking. The people who had responsibilities to protect the safety and interests of all these families has had their faith betrayed twice over.

We were on a 737 Max from Palm Springs to Chicago and the plane was jerking up and down and banging so bad that people were passing out. The lady next to me downed a handful of anxiety meds and was grabbing my arm and crying she did not want to be without her grandchildren. The pilot said it was due to bad head wind. The very next day, the planes were grounded. You’ll never convince me otherwise that it was due to wind. Ever!!

@aviationenthusiast20023 жыл бұрын
Hard to pin this one on boeing. The aircraft had issues on the previous flight, but the company still turned the jet as mission capable. Then the pilots who flew it had zero crm skills, didnt even know how to declare an emergency, captain gave up command to the copilot and did nothing, the pilots didnt know boldface memory items, etc. Lion air and the pilots were at fault here.

I've watched many of your videos. The addition of an incident brief to the Description is much appreciated. I often get partway through a video only to wonder what date and exact aircraft type was stated at the beginning and have to go back. Much handier to have this in the Description. Maybe going forward, we could have bullet points of the Date, Flight Designation with intended route, and Aircraft Type; perhaps a brief description of the incident as well, might help the algorithm pick up on search terms? One other thing I noticed: It's interesting to see the 737 MAX still retains the cutouts for celestial navigation windows even though I don't think they've been used since the 90's.

I take lots of risks test driving old cars and trucks. I recently test drived a rusted barely drivable engine stalling 30 year old Ford F-150 up and down steep hills that later found out it really had no brakes. I had to slam the tranny in revers a couple of times to prevent going over the side, so I am no coward, If I was PIC ( Pilot in Charge ) of this flight at the yoke peddles and levers rolling down the runway and the stick shaker was going off then I am wheels up and all kinds of goofy stuff was still going on... all that time and distance from the take-off runway would not have happened. I would be calling a IFE ( In Flight Emergency ) and be doing a wide 360 degree shallow banking turn back to land at that same runway. They really was dedicated to getting their costumers to their destination on time., But RIP ing them is way worse than being hours or a day or two late. Yes the Boeing MAX software is at fault but watching this Simulation shows that those people could be alive today. RIP

The captain should have turned back to the airport to make an emergency landing, as soon as they noticed discrepancies in their flight data monitors. Even the lengthy stick shaker was very alarming. Since it was a brand new aircraft, If only they had decided to turn back at once after noticing technical problems, maybe things would turn out to be different. Might have had a great chance.

The 737 MAX reminds me of the MD-11, in that both were developments of existing designs where attempts to improve fuel efficiency introduced dangerous handling deficiencies. For the 737 MAX the problem was too-far-forward engines, while the MD-11 had an undersized horizontal stabilizer (obvious when you compare it with a DC-10). At least no passengers died on MD-11s as a result of that handling deficiency, as both the resulting crashes were of FedEx cargo planes...

Then it seems he decided to have a look in the book himself, and gave control to the F/O. He had less success somehow, and the Captain did not know. My sympathies to those affected by this mess.

Not as easy as all that. When your altimeters are both wrong, it’s kind of hard to make a good landing. If he tried to land and slammed the plane in the ground we would all be on here wondering why he didn’t just stay in the air and figure out how to get a correct altimeter reading and resolve the pitch issue. It’s all easy behind a keyboard, unless you’re the guy with $120 million and 189 lives to get on the ground. Staying in the air makes a lot of sense if you don’t know your altitude and your aircraft is making unpredictable pitch changes, which is kind of a big deal if you’re trying to land. I know they didn’t do everything right, but I don’t think trying to figure out the issue before attempting to land was a mistake.
