It's how writer understands it. I'm psychology student and actually "insane" is much more narrow term than people think. F.e. Jigsaw was probably sane, same as Hannibal Lecter. Example of actually insane people was probably in "Mandy" (drug addict gang) but I can't really tell due to lack of data. And here it's probably what James said. I have basic knowledge about sects and their manipulations is very, very strong. You can free person from sect, but there is known case of people killed as they started shootout when police made raid.

She's one of them now, they successfully fully indoctrinated her and literally got her to dunk the kool-aid, now the cult is all she has, she's happy now but clearly she was Manipulated by them in order to officially join them, scary cause stuff like this do happen to innocent people.
@eagenthorror3 жыл бұрын
@@Petaurista13 well "insane" is not a real diagnosis and therefore is essentially meaningless as it is 100% subjective. you could call a person suffering from schizophrenia "insane", but you can also say that the people who call those suffering from such disabilities insane as being the real insane ones (because seriously in todays standards, its kinda fucked up and even ableist to dismiss people who are genuinely suffering when it isnt their fault as "crazy" or "insane"). needless to say, insane is often an insult.

I think it was clear she snapping when she saw Christian's rape, or in her perspective, Christian's infidelity. She was tricked into thinking he was unfaithful and, in her very fragile state, was given a choice to kill him, which she did. If she had more time to think, or learned what really happened, she wouldn't have killed him. I think her smile at the end was her realizing what she just did and finally losing herself.

i just came up with a theory: With the dance sequence, what if the women around Dani were deliberately falling to make her the last woman standing? They knew she was in pain, and what's the best way to cheer someone up? Make them feel like a princess. They took advantage of her pain and this was only another manner of inducting Dani into the cult. This movie is so brilliant. It's not just mindless entertainment, it's a movie that really makes you think and theorize and exposes you to uncomfortable imagery and topics that are very real.

I was calling out all the cult initiation actions throughout the movie. They were inciting paranoia through the drugs, enforcing isolation through their manipulation tactics with Christian and the steady removal of the friends, and of course the biggest one being love bombing. Something I love and have no idea wether or not it was intentional is that they condemn Christian as an evil spirit and wrap him up in the bear carcass then burn him, the shot of him sitting there looks so similar to final shot of Dani. But while Christian’s was shot dark and violent, Dani’s is shot bright and beautiful her being surrounded by flowers a sign of life, making the shot seem positive. However while the flowers are a sign of life they have been picked from the ground and are dead, eventually wilting and decaying. Both Dani and Christian are wearing corpses, perfectly illustrating how hypocritical the cultists actually are. Again I have no clue if this was intentional or not it’s just the way I interpreted it. And I don't know what it means to be "actually happy". She smiled, people smile when they are happy, she seemed happy. Maybe she won't be happy long term, but that doesn't mean she's not happy in that moment. You have to try and look at things via her perspective rather than projecting yourself onto her. A lot of people would make the trade she made. Lose a boyfriend who doesn't love her, and his friends that don't like her either, for hundreds of people who literally treat you like you are a queen. Them being killers (not murderers) isn't the red flag you think it is. Women marry men in the military all the time. And she already proved that she's willing to participate in the killing. So the only thing you are really pointing out is that she's from a different culture. But people swap out old cultures for new ones all the time.

It's really creepy when they reveal everyone would've been killed regardless of what they did. At first, you think they just messed up by breaking the rules or behaving inappropriately. It adds an extra element of horror, because I think most of the audience would say "come on, man, they said not to take pictures of the book. I wouldn't have done that" and we'd think we'd be safe in that hypothetical scenario. But, nope, they were destined to die the second they arrived. Nothing would've changed it.

I think people so commonly misinterpret this movie's ending as a positive thing for the same reason they do other movies like Joker, Parasite, Fight Club, and others: modern culture is so used to seeing the "protagonists" be morally right all the time in 99% of movies that when they do something horrible, they subconsciously assume it must be good as they have been following and identify with the main character for the whole movie. If the perspectives were slightly shifted in these movies, for example if Midsommar was told from Christian's point of view, the audience would see the former protagonists much differently.

I agree with you, I don't think the film celebrates Christian's sacrifice. I don't think they would've put him through all that if they wanted that, they would've just had him cheat of his own volition, rather than be raped. Plus, the script makes it clear that Dani is completely in the hands of the cult now, and they clearly let her believe he did it himself. I think people who interpret this film's ending as being happy (as a good and bad thing) are taking it at face value. To me, it was always clear that it was a downer ending, only happy to Dani because she's completely lost her mind.

The funny thing about people thinking this is a "girl power" movie is that technically it's the exact opposite of girl power. She literally lost all power by succumbing to the cult and doing their bidding. Shes never leaving that cult. The entire point was to show the insane manipulation that cults are able to put out to bring people in to literally either murder or control for their own personal gain. Idk how that is in any way girl power. If this truly was a girl power film, she wouldnt have succumbed to the lure they put on her. She would've taken control of her life and PTSD herself, not through the manipulation of a cult. Idk why but it really upsets me that people completely misunderstand the message of the film to the point where they're going "yaaass queen" when they see her smile at the end.

@Miriam Svenson I've seen a ton of people say they thought it was a girl power movie and how they liked that she chose her boyfriend to die. My sister even said it while the credits rolled and it honestly really irritated me because the whole point is to try and convey the way that cults can easily brainwash and trick you. We aren't supposed to be happy with the ending or rooting for her being completely brainwashed by the cult. It's the same as how her boyfriend was raped and people are saying it was voluntary when he was literally drugged for the entire film constantly. If the roles were reversed people would've hated the film. If her boyfriend was in her position it wouldve been an anti feminist hate film that glorifies gaslighting and rape. But because the roles are the way they were, people see it as a girl power movie. It's really stupid honestly.

Christian did not cheat on Dani. He was raped. For those who don't understand why the scene where he "mated" with her (whatever that girls name was) was rape, it's because Christian had been drugged, putting him in a vulnerable and confused state. Because Christian was under the influence of drugs when the rape scene happened. *That proves that Christian was not in the right mindset for this to be considered consent.* TL;DR: Christian was on drugs, which means it wasn't consent, which means it was rape. Oh yeah also people should be more aware that both men and women can fall victim to sexual assault. Regardless of biological sex and structure, not all men are rapists and not all women are real (emphasis on REAL as in can still be) victims of sexual assault.

They likely knew that Dani was extremely vulnerable, due to losing all of her family and not having proper support elsewhere, making her a very easy target. The examples of love-bombing throughout are well-done. The ending scene is also extremely effective. Dani has well and truly lost her mind at this point and all the others have been horribly killed and all the audience can do is watch. I remember seeing this in cinema and after Dani did the crazy smile and the movie ending, everyone is the screen was silent. Then one person quietly said 'what the f*ck.'

We are there to record and observe as much as we can while trying to stay emotionally distant. Just as a reminder to anyone in the comments who may need it for whatever reason: This is not a good place, it's not ideal. Dani already started the movie as a co-dependent person. Then her family is taken out not only suddenly, but in one traumatic, awful event that she likely erroneously feels guilt over. Then she takes mind-altering drugs throughout the film. She is continually broken down by a relationship she doesn't have the time or emotional capacity to process because of the fact the larger, more pressing pain of losing her entire immediate family hasn't been properly processed. She does not talk to anyone-- no grief councilor, no therapist, no professional help. Not even a friend or some spiritual advisor or layperson. Places like this, or cults, prey precisely on people like Dani. They focus on people who are missing something in their lives and are usually codependent. This isn't to say the people they go after are stupid or emotionally immature in some way, just lacking the fortitude at that given moment that makes them susceptible or vulnerable so they can take them in. And just like Dani, cults "love bomb" people by making them feel validated, accepted, and part of a family. It's all to make them stay and not question whether or not something is wrong. Using sleep deprivation is another big tactic, along with hard manual labor to keep people too weak and tired to focus or fight-- something that is a big part of this movie as conveniently, the festival takes place on the longest days of the year with shorter nights. Don't let your emotions cloud logic or instinct that tells you something, no matter now nice, seems wrong or off.

As a swede, the creepiest thing about midsummer (the real festivity) is that it almost always rains. Even on the sunniest hottest summer years. Also this movie is gorgeous, the choreography is actually very similar to what us swedes do on midsummer and have done for ages. Flowers are just as important as it is in this movie for most of us
